Cyn opsis: Kids!
1/26/07
Good morning. It’s Friday, January 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
HIT Entertainment has launched HIT Favourites, its new multi-brand umbrella licensing strategy, at the London Toy Fair this week. HIT Favourites will create a new range of products across categories including toys and games, DVDs and books, all based on HIT’s brands. All products will feature a minimum of four characters from the company’s main properties including Bob the Builder, Barney, Angelina Ballerina, Kipper, Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam, Rubbadubbers and Pingu. HIT has already inked several new licensing partners for the new branded range with products expected to be available in 2007. In the UK deals include: Tomy Yujin has developed toy capsules in prominent HIT branded cubes in counter displays; Character Options has developed puzzles, board and action games and card games; Kinnerton Confectionery will launching candy items for Easter 2007 that will include Thomas, Fireman Sam, Bob and Pingu; and Green’s will launching a cake mix under the HIT Favourites branding this year.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Hogwarts isn’t a real school … umm – right? Such a question can only mean one thing … a new reality show. And so it is that the BBC’s CBBC is prepping The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Set to bow on the CBBC later this year, the series will follow a group of UK kids, to be selected through auditions, who are whisked off to a boarding school for 18 days of immersive training by professional magicians on topics including the history of magic and folklore, the Latin for casting spells, chemistry, the art of illusion and they will also have to care for the resident magic animals. At the end of each week’s lessons, the kids will perform magic in front of a live audience and “the Sorcerer.” Hosted by Barney Harwood, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is produced by Twenty Twenty, an indie production company.
CBBC also has in the works a companion series for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which will offer kids at home step-by-step instruction on how to perform magic tricks.
MORE KIDS STUFF
TV-Loonland has inked several new deals for its multi-platform CGI animated short-form series The Owl (52×1′); picking up the series are Swedish broadcaster SVT, South African pay-TV operator M-Net, and Thailand’s UBC subsidiary Cineplex Company. A non-verbal humor-based series, The Owl follows the unending mishaps of a pink owl. The short-form series debuted last month in France on France 3. The Owl is created and directed by Alexandre So, and is a co-production of TV-Loonland, Studio Hari and France 3 network.
New episodes of 4Kids Entertainment’s animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fast Forward has been acquired by ITV Network (UK), RTVE (Spain) and Media Set (Italy) among others. ITV (UK) has acquired rights to both ITV and CiTV, with RTVE (Spain) picking up all 130 episodes of the series. These new licensee join recent deals for the TMNT series which include pacts with SIC (Portugal), Ten Network (Australia), Cartoon Network (Australia & NZ), DR TV (Denmark), and Mediacorp TV12’s Kid Central (Singapore) among others.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Tiger Electronics will introduce Net Jet, its new instant-play online game system, at retail on February 11, 2007 in New York to coincide with the American International Toy Fair, followed by a national launch in fall 2007. Targeted to tweens, Net Jet comes with a controller that plugs into a PC’s USB port, a game key that fits into the controller and activates content. The system will be supported by 40 games at launch. Developed or licensed specifically for the system by third-party online game developers, initial games will include titles based on Hasbro’s Super Soaker, Cartoon Network’s Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and Marble Blast XP from GarageGames. Tiger Electronics is a division of Hasbro, Inc. ( www.netjetinfo.com )
Leading up to the Super Bowl next week, The Upper Deck Company will launch a limited edition superhero-inspired vinyl 11-inch tall action figures based on three Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks, Ben Roethlisberger, Brett Favre and Tom Brady. If you want them, here is what you need to know: There are only 1,000 of each of the three players and they will be released one day at a time beginning with Roethlisberger (January 30, 12:07p/EST), Favre (January 31, 12:04p/EST) and Brady (February 1, 12:12p/EST); the figures will be available exclusively online ( www.allstarvinyl.com ). One last thing … each figure will set you back $49.95. These first figures mark the launch of All-Star Vinyl’s product line in all four major sport categories, with NBA and NHL figures slated for release in March, and MLB player figures in May. This year will see a total of 38 figures released under the All-Star Vinyl label.
Educational Adventures has completed several new product licensing deals for its kid-targeted safety theme property Dangers Rangers including those with: Fun World (Halloween costumes, Easter egg decorations, gift warp) and Renaissance Imports, Inc. (footwear-in mass market drug and grocery chains).
STONE SOUP
Follow-up on the awards announced earlier this week at the midwinter meeting of the American Library Association. Among the books singled out, there is one category that I thought was interesting and that you might want to know about. The Alex Awards, which recognize books written for adults, but that appeal to teens. This year’s Alex Awards included: The Book of Lost Things, author – John Connolly (Simon & Schuster/Atria); The Whistling Season, author – Ivan Doig (Harcourt); Eagle Blue: A Team, A Tribe, and A High School Basketball Season in Arctic Alaska, author – Michael D’Orso (Bloomsbury); Water for Elephants, author – Sara Gruen (Algonquin); Color of the Sea, author – John Hamamura (Thomas Dunne); The Floor of the Sky, author – Pamela Carter Joern (University of Nebraska); The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, author – Michael Lewis (Norton); Black Swan Green, author – David Mitchell (Random House); The World Made Straight, author – Ron Rash (Henry Holt); The Thirteenth Tale, author – Diane Setterfield (Simon & Schuster/Atria)
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Turner Broadcasting is restructuring its entertainment Ad Sales division, which moving forward will operate under the new banner, Turner Media Innovations (TMI). TMI will operate as a full media consultancy focusing more on sales for Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Toonami, Cartoon Network Too and Turner Classic Movies. Previously the Ad Sales, Sponsorship & Promotions, and Sales Operations departments reported directly into Simon Cox. The new structure will see Ian Dowds upped to Sales Controller, taking direct responsibility for the day to day running of the Ad Sales Department and reporting into Cox. Jennifer Burgos, Director/Sponsorship & Promotions, and Karl Anderssen, Director/Sales Operations, will continue to run their respective teams and will both report directly into Cox.
Following a review of its US operations, recording label EMI Group has decided to merge its Capitol Records and Virgin Record labels to form The Capitol Music Group. Headed by Jason Flom as Chairman and CEO, currently head of Virgin Records America, The Capitol Music Group will be a pop, rock and urban music label group, which will encompass Capitol and Virgin Records imprints. Flom joined EMI as Chairman and CEO, Virgin Records America in November 2005, will now oversee the combined Capitol and Virgin rosters in the US. Stepping down from his post as President and CEO, Capitol Records is Andrew Slater. Flom will continue to report to Eric Nicoli, CEO, EMI Group. Bruce Lundvall, President and CEO of The Blue Note Label Group, will continue to report directly to Nicoli, as will EMI Music North America COO, Ivan Gavin and EMI Music North America CFO, Colin Finkelstein.
Zach Posner is named to the new position of VP/Corporate Development, National Lampoon Inc. He will focus his energies on potential acquisitions for the company, which falls in with the company’s ongoing pan to expand its brand and distribution platforms via strategic partnerships and other opportunities. Posner joins National Lampoon from World Avenue, an internet marketing services and technology company, where he worked in the corporate development group.
