Not surprisingly, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps was appointed by President Obama as Acting Chairman of the FCC taking over from former FCC Chairman Kevin Martin who resigned January 20. President Obama’s administration is expected to tap Julius Genachowski as the full-time chairman soon.

Lifetime Television debuts a new half-hour series Cook Yourself Thin with twenty episodes this spring, showing viewers how to eat their favorite, best-tasting foods and lose weight. Based on a British series and cookbook with the same name, foodie experts Harry Eastwood, Allison Fishman and Candice Kumai will makeover indulgent dishes by cutting calories and making them healthier. Tiger Aspect Productions produces for Lifetime.

In a week, Discovery Channel will roll out a new “caught-on-camera” action series called Adrenaline Rush Hour on January 30 at 9p. The reality series catches everything from a race car driver’s explosion to a kiteboarder’s crash in a house followed by analysis of what went wrong with each dramatic stunt. Adrenaline Rush Hour is produced for the network by Nash Entertainment.

Travel Channel brings back its original adventure series Mark & Olly: Living with the Machigenga for a third season beginning February 8 at 10p. The series documents explorers Mark Anstice and Oliver “Olly” Steeds as they travel through the Upper Urabamba region of Peru to live with the isolated Machigenga tribe. Cicada Productions produces the series for the Travel Channel.

As of now, Nielsen reports more than 6.5 million U.S. households representing 5.7% of all homes to date are still completely unready for the digital broadcast transition. This number has decreased by 1.3 million homes since Nielsen’s last report issued in late December.

TVN Entertainment Corp. is teaming with Cox Communications to make available TVN’s VOD network The Karaoke Channel to Cox Digital Cable subscribers. Customers can access the channel for free via Cox’s On DEMAND menu. The Karaoke Channel reaches more than 27 million subscribers.


Former Dallas Cowboy and NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin is working with 3 Ball Productions to develop a new original series for Spike TV. The yet-to-be-named series created by Irvin and his production company, Playmaker Productions centers on twelve amateur football players who compete against each other to nab one spot in the Dallas Cowboy training camp next summer and possibly a position on the team. The project is scheduled to kick off this spring. Irvin will be involved as on-camera talent and as mentor to the players. Former Cowboy’s coaches and players will train and guest judges consisting of previous players and coaches, media personalities and Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones will make appearances.

NBC ordered a 60m pilot titled Mercy from writer Liz Heldens (Friday Night Lights), reports THR. The dramedy centers on three nurses who are friends and intertwined in each other’s professional and personal lives. Universal Media Studios will produce.

Azteca America tapped Hispanic legal expert and former talk show host Laura Bozzo to lead a new talk show format for U.S. Hispanic audiences beginning mid-February.


CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Effects of the downturn continue to be felt in the tech industry as Microsoft announced it will resort to its first-every major round of layoffs, cutting up to 5,000 jobs in R&D, marketing, sales, finance, LCA, HR, and IT over the next 18 months. The company posted an 11% drop in Q2 earnings on revenues of $16.6 billion – nearly $1 billion below earlier guidance – blaming weakness of the global PC market and the rapid shift to lower priced netbooks. Intel and IBM also began major layoffs this week, displacing thousands of Bay-area workers.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 81st Academy Awards yesterday morning.  Receiving nods for best animated feature film are Disney’s Bolt, DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda and Disney’s Wall-E.  Including best feature film, Wall-E earned a total of six nominations, including for: best in musical score; song  Down to Earth, music by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman, lyrics by Gabriel; sound editing; sound mixing; and original screenplay  screenplay by Andrew Stanton and Jim Reardon.  The Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday, February 22, 2008 on ABC (8p), live from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.  The Oscars will be televised in 200+ countries worldwide.  Congrats to all!  A full list of Oscar nominees can be found at . Tuesday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX remained the overall winner Tuesday night with 6.9/16 A18-49 according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p, American Idol on FOX led big with 9.0/22, while the special Neighborhood Ball on ABC danced into second place with 3.5/9. NBC took over at 9p as The Biggest Loser won with 4.8/12 and FOX’s Fringe came next at 4.6/11. ABC topped the list at 10p with an ABC News Special covering the presidential inauguration with 3.0/8 followed by a repeat of CBS’ The Mentalist at 2.6/7.

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX continued its winning streak this week by topping Wednesday night with 7.4/18 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. American Idol on FOX held a commanding lead through 8p with 9.8/25 followed by ABC and its Lost: Destiny Calls program with 3.3/9. The season premiere of ABC’s Lost won the 9p hour with 5.2/13 while the new drama Lie To Me on FOX was a close second at 4.9/12. The second half of the Lost opening episode was #1 at 10p with a 4.9/13 with CBS’ CSI: NY next at 2.9/7.

Walt Disney Company announced yesterday Stephen McPherson, ABC Entertainment President will now head a newly merged unit called ABC Entertainment Group, consisting of ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios. Mark Pedowitz, President of ABC Studios will become Senior Advisor to Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair, Disney-Media Networks and President, Disney-ABC Television Group. 

Bravo Media appointed Julie Riven as VP/Consumer Marketing to lead Bravo’s strategic development and implementation of its consumer marketing activities. Julie will report to Ellen Stone, SVP/Marketing, Bravo Media.

Christal Radio, a unit of Katz Radio Group, upped three executives in its Los Angeles office: Florentino Reyes to VP/Sales Manager; Kim Carlson to VP/Sales; and Ron Russ to Senior AE.

Barbara Zaneri joined BET Networks as EVP/Programming Strategy, Scheduling and Acquisitions to supervise the network’s programming strategy and to head the team in charge of program planning, scheduling and acquisitions. Based in New York, Barbara will report to Loretha Jones, President/Original Programming, BET Networks.

Golf Channel elevated Chris Murvin to SVP/Business Affairs to oversee the human resources and legal departments. Chris will also supervise the administration of the Golf Channel’s current contracts with major golf organizations and international partners. Chris will continue to report to Page Thompson, President.

David Wollos and Joan Packard Luks partnered to form The ThinkTank Emporium, a media, marketing and licensing company to work with property owners/licensors.
