Cynopsis: Kids!

01/23/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 23, 2009, a history making day, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 81st Academy Awards yesterday morning.  Receiving nods for best animated feature film are Disney’s Bolt, DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda and Disney’s Wall-E.  Including best feature film, Wall-E earned a total of six nominations, including for: best in musical score; song  Down to Earth, music by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman, lyrics by Gabriel; sound editing; sound mixing; and original screenplay  screenplay by Andrew Stanton and Jim Reardon.  The Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday, February 22, 2008 on ABC (8p), live from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.  The Oscars will be televised in 200+ countries worldwide.  Congrats to all!  A full list of Oscar nominees can be found at http://www.oscars.org .

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Coolabi Productions inks a deal with Joel Gotler of Intellectual Property Group on behalf of The Viney Agency, for the dramatic rights for novelist Chris Bradford‘s Young Samurai ( www.youngsamai.com) kid’s book series.  The Young Samurai revolves around Jack a British boy stranded by shipwreck in 17th century Japan, and his endeavors to become the first foreign samurai with the help of a legendary swordmaster.  The first volume in the Young Samurai trilogy, The Way of the Warrior was published by Puffin in August 2008 and is now in its sixth printing. Disney-Hyperion will publish in the US this March 2009.  Further publishing rights deals have been completed for fifteen foreign language territories with more deals TBA in 2009.

Warner Bros. is looking to bring Hanna-Barbera‘s Tom and Jerry back to the big screen as a family movie franchise, per Variety.  The movie will be a mixed live-action and animated Tom and Jerry movie, with Tom and Jerry being animated and set in a live-action environment.  Produced by Dan Lin‘s Lin Productions (producer-Sherlock Holmes, exec. producer-Terminator: Salvation) and penned by Eric Gravning, the movie is sort of a prequel that shows how Tom and Jerry meet and how their rivalry develops and then how they have to work together to get home after getting lost in Chicago.  Warner Bros. has worked the mixed animation and live-action concept in other feature films including adaptations of Hanna-Barbera’s Scooby Doo, and then Looney Tunes characters in Space Jam (1996) and Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003).  You may also recall that Warner Bros. released Tom and Jerry: The Movie in 1992.

Abigail Breslin (Kitt Kittredge, Little Miss Sunshine) signs on for three feature films including two animated pictures, according to Variety.  Breslin will lend her voice to a character in Gore Verbinski’s CG animated feature film Rango from Paramount, also starring Johnny Depp who plays a family pet.  She will also voice the lead character in the animated movie The Wild Bunch, about a group of wildflowers attacked by evil genetically modified cornstalks.  The Wild Bunch is from Israel-based Animation Lab, and has a star studded cast including Willem Dafoe, Willie Nelson, Elizabeth Hurley and Chris Klein.  The final project for the young Breslin is Zombieland; the Columbia horror picture is not so much for kids.

HIT Entertainment and TV Azteca, a free TV channel in Mexico, have launched a new HIT-branded preschool TV block, Ninos Siete, in Mexico Sundays 7-9a, as well as a corresponding website ( www.nsiete.tv ). The block features wrap-around interstitials hosted by three kids (a 12-year-old girl and her 10-year-old twin brothers) and offers a range of series from HIT libraries including Barney & Friends, Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends and Pingu, among others.  TV Azteca is supporting the new block with promotional spots across its networks, with HIT is promoting Ninos Siete on www.barney.com . Additionally, Ninos Siete will also be featured on 170,000+ HIT DVDs across eight titles to be released in 2009 in Mexico, as well as through Barney Magazine, Kena Magazine and other popular women’s titles from Editorial Armonia.

Freakatars, a new kid-targeted “creating and collecting” combo social community and interactive game online site and offline play, has launched into phase one of public beta at www.freakatars.com . Designed for K3-11, Freakatars lets users create and care for their own creations, and plan also to add limited edition parts, virtual goods and games among other features.  Founded and helmed by Adam Jacobs, Freakatars.com is currently free, but upcoming plans include a subscription plan for Q3 2009, as well as selling virtual and physical goods and collector cards.  Get going now and you can start saving up your Freakies to acquire stuff later.

STONE SOUP

Call for creative kids:
Arthur is getting a new pal for his PBS Kids Go! series, and is looking to real kids to help create that friend.  Arthur and CVS Caremark All Kids Can, a program designed to make life easier for kids with disabilities, are teaming for the Arthur/All Kids can Character Search.  Kids 6-12 are invited to submit their ideas for a new character, specifically one with a unique ability, trait, or disability, with a drawing and description of what makes that character special from February 1 through March 31, 2009.  Entry forms and rules can be found from February 1 at www.pbskidsgo.org/arthur/allkidscan.  The kid with the winning character will be featured in a live-action segment on an episode of Arthur, and Arthur creator/author Marc Brown will visit their town.
