Good Morning. It’s Friday, January 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) forged an agreement which allows industry creative talent to participate financially in all areas of new media. The AMPTP in a statement said, “We hope that this agreement with DGA will signal the beginning of the end of this extremely difficult period for our industry. Today, we invite the Writers Guild of America to engage with us in a series of informal discussions similar to the productive process that led us to a deal with the DGA to determine whether there is a reasonable basis for returning to formal bargaining. We look forward to these discussions, and to the day when our entire industry gets back to work.” The WGA said it would carefully review the AMPTP/DGA deal along with its Negotiating Committee, WGAW Board of Directors and WGAE Council. Furthermore, the WGA issued the following response: “For over a month, we have been urging the conglomerates to return to the table and bargain in good faith. They have chosen to negotiate with the DGA instead. Now that those negotiations are completed, the AMPTP must return to the process of bargaining with the WGA. We hope that the DGA’s tentative agreement will be a step forward in our effort to negotiate an agreement that is in the best interests of all writers.” Tonight’s Finale: Sunday’s Premieres:
BREAKING BAD | AMC Original Series | Premieres This Sunday 10pm/9c
~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
The Style Network renewed Split Ends for a third season, slated to premiere this spring. Production is currently happening on this unscripted weekly series that pits two hairstylists who swap shops and discover what it’s like working in an opposite environment. The series was developed by The Style Network in association with 44 Blue Productions. Nashville Star will move from USA Network to NBC to air in primetime this summer. Auditions will begin in a variety of city starting next month, and for the first time will allow duets and groups to audition, in addition to solo performers. ION Media Networks, Inc. is collaborating with Star Media and Omnicom’s OMG Entertainment & Sports division to create and showcase African-American programming on the ION Television Network. Initially, the partnership will use syndicated shows and the TV libraries of Warner Bros. and other major TV studios to program urban and diverse content. Later, net proceeds from this venture will be invested into developing new, original African-American programming. ION Television initiated this venture on January 14 with The Wayans Brothers at 6p, in association with Warner Bros. Domestic Television. Charter advertising sponsors include McDonald’s State Farm and P&G. Charlie Rose is returning to 60 Minutes as a contributor, while continuing his one-on-one interview series on PBS. Rose had been with 60 Minutes II for nearly six years, so this won’t be anything new for him. Sky Angel U.S., LLC, a national television provider of faith-based and family-friendly content, made a deal to offer the NFL Network as part of its new Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) channel roster. Sky Angel IPTV subscribers will soon receive the NFL Network in addition to its Video-On-Demand which offers extra game highlights and shows from the NFL Films library. Automotive Broadcasting Network (ABN) officially launched giving auto dealers a chance to market their businesses to new audiences. ABN also formed a pact with CBS Outernet, a division of CBS, to provide content for ABN that includes clips and segments of CBS shows such as The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Early Show and 60 Minutes. Other content includes a series of ABN-produced shorts featuring tech tips and car highlights designed to educate customers and increase sales. So, what are you doing on August 21, 2008? The Cynopsis Foundation is looking to book its 2nd annual gala and fundraiser in NYC supporting the Kids in Need Foundation and Philippe Cousteau’s EarthEcho International. You good for that date? If so, pencil us in, would ya? I’ll get back to you when we’ve got it confirmed. A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM AMC

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: That was fast. The Directors Guild of America reached a tentative 3-year contract agreement with the studios after just 5 days of negotiations, putting pressure on writers to end their walkout after 11 weeks of work stoppage. The deal gives DGA jurisdiction over programs produced for online distribution and establishes new residuals formula for paid download-to-own sell-throughs that “essentially doubles” the current rate paid by employers. (Sell-through residual rates will be .70% for TV downloads and .65% for film downloads, based on distributors gross.) For ad-supported streaming product, companies must pay 3% of the residual base (apprx. $600 for 1 hour of prime time) for 26 weeks of streaming, after an initial 17-day window of free promotional streaming. The agreement does not cover lower budget projects that cost less than $15,000 per minute, $300,000 per program or $500,000 per series (whichever is lowest.) For all the nuts and bolts of the deal, characterized by head DGA negotiator Gil Cates as “groundbreaking and substantial,” go to dga.org . Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. Kinowelt’s 7,000+ titles will be added to StudioCanal’s 5,000+ catalog. The company’s founders, Michael and Rainer Koelmel, will continue to serve with Michael acting as head of strategy and Rainer heading up acquisitions. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL. ~ RATINGS ~
