Cynopsis: Kids!

01/16/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 16, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Current Federal Communication Commission Chairperson Kevin Martin, a Republican appointed by President George Bush and who has led the FCC for four years (and served on the FCC for eight), said yesterday that he would relinquish his title effective, Tuesday, January 20, which of course coincides with the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.  Martin’s appointment was not officially set to end until 2011.  Martin moves on to become a fellow at the Aspen Institute, a Washington-based think tank, according to the AP, which added that the previous three FCC heads similarly joined the Aspen Institute.  With Martin’s departure the FCC, which is comprised of five members (each serving five-year terms), the FCC will be without a Chairperson until the new President names one.  The broadcasting industry has been abuzz with news that Obama will name Julius Genachowski, a Democrat, as the new head of the FCC. Genachowski previously served as a Sr. advisor to two FCC Chairpersons, Reed Hunt and William Kennard.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Blueprint Entertainment has begun production on Teletoon‘s original mixed live-action/animated tween-aimed series, Majority Rules (f/k/a Go Girl, 26×30).  Spin Entertainment is providing animated and graphic components for the series.  Oasis International, a film/TV distribution arm of Entertainment One (E1), will handle worldwide rights for the series.  Blueprint Entertainment was recently acquired by producer/distributor (E1).  Majority Rules revolves around the new mayor of the town of Mayfield, who happens to be a 15-year-old girl named Becky, as she tries to balance friends, family, high school and politics.

Cartoon Network will also mark the presidential inauguration on Tuesday.  Throughout the day the network will feature K8-12 in 1030 spots as they offer the new President their advice and thoughts on matters presidential.  Additionally, Cartoon Network also took its current on-air icon, the “Nood,” and created a President elect Barack Obama one, which will be used on all on-air bumps and menus.  By the way  if you aren’t familiar with the “Nood,” check out the Cartoon Network home page ( www.cartoonnetwork.com ).

MARKETING/LICENSING

American Idol is turning to digital outlets to try and grow its (suddenly dwindling) audience. FremantleMedia Enterprises and teen virtual world Habbo are constructing a virtual Idol talent show slated to launch by the end of January, hoping to extend sponsors Coke, AT&T and others to the online environment. To help keep the 3 million US-based “Habbos” engaged throughout the 20-week long program, Habbo will introduce new in-game virtual items and activities each month as the on-air American Idol season progresses

The stars of Laika Inc.‘s upcoming stop-motion 3D movie Coraline, Dakota Fanning, Keith David, and Robert Bailey Jr., have also lent their voices to D3Publisher‘s new video game Coraline: The Game ( www.coralinethegame.com ). The Game will be available in North America for Wii, Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2 systems from January 27, which coincides with Focus Feature’s domestic release of Coraline the movie on February 6, 2009.  Coraline for Wii and the PlayStation 2 system is developed by Papaya Studios and carries an ESRB rating of E 10+ (Everyone 10 and up), while the Nintendo DS version of the game is developed by Art Co. Ltd., and is rated E by the ESRB.

Disney Interactive Studios releases Disney Sing It: High School Musical 3: Senior Year, a karaoke-based video game, on February 17, 2009, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Playstation 3 and Wii.  The game allows players to perform songs from the movie High School Musical 3: Senior Year, as well as select songs from the first two High School Musical movies.  Developed by Zoe Mode, all titles carry an ESRB rating of E (for Everyone).

Video game publisher 505 Games releases the Hotel For Dogs video game ( www.hotelfordogsthegame.com) for Wii and Nintendo DS.  Based on the live-action Hotel For Dogs movie from DreamWorks Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies, the game allows players to help the sister/brother team from the movie to feed and entertain a multitude of dogs by creating different gadgets and playing with the dogs in the hotel.  Both games carry an ESRB rating of E (for Everyone).  Distributed by Paramount Pictures, Hotel For Dogs stars Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Dillon and Dong Cheadle, and opens today, January 16, 2009.
