Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Friday, February 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

“Can you make it with spoons?”  That used to be the answer to pitching a cooking show for kids (ya know kids love knives, stoves and hot boiling this and that).  Enter, chef Jamie Oliver, who with his production company Fresh One, will produce the food/cookery centric, preschool-targeted series called, Made with Magic, which will broadcast on the Nick Jr. digital channel in the UK.  Designed to get kids interested in where food comes from, the mixed live-action and CGI-animated series will not star Oliver, but he will serve as executive producer.

In announcing plans for new dramatic kids series for the 2009/10 season, the CBBC, the BBC’s K6-12 targeted channel, revealed it will bid so-long to the kids series Grange Hill after a 30 year run. Created by Phil Redmond, Grange Hill premiered on the BBC in 1978, and has been produced for the last group of years by Lime Pictures.  CBBC is currently developing a new drama from Lime Pictures with writer Jeanette Winterson, which will be part of the 2009/10.  New CBBC shows and returning series include:

  • Half Moon Investigations (13×30)  about crime, corruption and general wrong doing in the schoolyard
  • We Are Family (working title) (13×30)  an in-house production, the series is a comedy about a singing family who are the resident music act on a talk show.
  • Roy (13×30) a cartoon kid who finds himself stuck in the real world, the show is from JAM Media.
  • Paradise Cafe (13×30)  a beachside mystery with a supernatural twist, the program comes from Initial.
  • CBBC has also commissioned two new Newsround special short films (15 minutes each), both from director Kez Margrie, and are set to bow in spring 2008: The Worst Thing Ever?, which focuses on divorce and features animated tips for kids on deal with their parents splitting up; the second special (title TBD) investigates the issue of knife crimes, and young people carrying and using knives.
  • Returning for new seasons are: The Sarah Jane Adventures (12×30)/BBC Wales, M.I. High (13×30)/Kudos.


Ludorum plc, a UK-based interactive media investment company, completes deals for two animated series.

  • Ludorum plc signs broadcast deals for the 3D animated preschool series Chuggington with BBC (UK), SuperRTL (Germany), RF1 (France), and ABC (Australia).  Chuggington is set to broadcast globally from spring 2009.  Additionally, Learning Curve Brands, Inc., a US-based toy manufacturer, has signed with Ludorum to serve as the global toy partner for Chuggington, with product slated to rollout in early 2010.
  • Ludorum has also inked a long-term agency with D C Thomson & Co. Ltd to represent global broadcast, home entertainment, consumer products and new media rights to Dennis and Gnasher, based on the characters from Beano.  Currently in production with delivery set for fall 2009, the new animated Dennis and Gnasher (52×11) series has been pre-sold to BBC and Nine Network (Australia).

National Geographic Television International taps Elastic Rights to handle the TV, home video, merchandising and licensing rights for the preschool animated series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies (52×11 or 26×24) across Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece.  Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies is a co-production between National Geographic Kids Entertainment, BBC/CBeebies and King Rollo Films.

Sesame Street’s Muppet Prairie Dawn makes a guest appearance on Sprout’s live morning program, The Sunny Side Up Show (9a-12n), on Valentine’s Day, February 14.  Prairie Dawn joins host Kelly and Chica the Chicken as the three make Valentine’s Day cards, share viewer Valentine’s wishes (as submitted on, and take viewer calls.

Correction: The new Wii game from EA’s Casual Entertainment Label in collaboration with director/producer Steven Spielberg is titled BOOM BLOX.

The 9th annual KidScreen Summit takes place in NYC next week, February 13-15. This year’s gathering will be the largest KidScreen event so far with some 1300+ people expected to attend. If you’re coming in from out of town for the event – bring an umbrella.  We’re looking at rain and snow showers mid-week and average daytime temps in the low to mid-30s. Cynopsis Kids will be in attendance all next week and we plan to report news and goings on at the Summit in a Cyn Kids Special: KidScreen Summit section inside this daily edition each day during the event – so send in your related news releases early! 


DreamWorks Animation SKG has appointed UK-based The Licensing Company (TLC) to represent Madagascar: The Crate Escape, the sequel to its movie Madagascar (2005), across Europe.  Madagascar: The Crate Escape is slated for release in fall 2008.

Following Super RTL’s (Germany) successful launch of Entertainment Rights’ preschool property Rupert Bear Follow the Magic (52×10) in Germany earlier last month, plans are underway to develop and launch a publishing, DVD, toy and apparel program that will hit retail in 2009.  Additionally, Rupert Bear will brand Super RTL’s Toggo Live nationwide tour throughout 2008 and will be featured on from April 2008.  The series is produced by Cosgrove Hall Animation Studio.

Abbey Home Media Group (AHMG) has entered into two new publishing deals for preschool-aimed Early Learning Programs, which are designed to support preschoolers in ten key developmental learning areas.  AHMG secures a deal Germany’s Edition XXL to produce the Wide Eye Early Learning Program in Germany, and with Pioneer LLC to produce the Wide Eye, Mother Goose and Artyfacts Early Learning Programs in the Middle East, India and selected Far Eastern Market.  Both will begin rolling out this year.


Hosted by Jack Black, Nickelodeon’s 21st Annual Kids Choice Awards air live Saturday, March 29 (8-9:30p) from UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, where kids favorites across a range of categories.  As always, kids will be asked to vote online for their favorites ( kca , from March 3, and on the Nick mobile site  Some of the kids favorite categories and nominees include:

MTV President Christina Norman has resigned her post.  Norman, who leaves the company after 17 years, is credited with reinvigorating some of MTV’s major franchises including the Video Music Awards and the MTV Movie Awards.  Van Toffler, President MTV Networks Music & Logo Group will assume Norman’s responsibilities.  Norman’s future plans were not disclosed.  MTV employees officially got the news via email yesterday.

In the recently opened-up-shop department … Planet News and Views has opened its doors.  Headed by Robert Truog, the company provides companies with advertising opportunities on free in-school materials, including bookmarks, book covers, posters, stickers and school supplies and so on.  Planet News and Views reaches students in K-12 in 92,000 schools.  Truog is the founder and President of Medbanner Inc., an online ad network.
