Good morning. It’s Friday, February 6, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon rolls out a series of iPhone and iTouch applications this week based on its series SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and iCarly.  Nick will also launch extensions of its online gaming sites, Shockwave.com and AddictingGames.com, on the iPhone, including streaming mobile video applications and games.  Nickelodeon launched a mini-application, The SpongeBob Tickler, developed with Mobui, on January 20, and this week introduces SpongeBob SquarePants Atlantis Treasures, published by THQ.  Some of the upcoming Nickelodeon apps include:

  • iCarly on the iPhone, published by Oasys, bows in September 2009
  • SpongeBob’s Wacky Walk and Shockwave’s Daily Jigsaws-To-Go launch in April 2009
  • Sara’s Super Spa, based on the Shockwave.com game, debuts June 2009
  • SpongeBob SquarePants Diner Dash, published by Nickelodeon and PlayFirst, bow in July.

Disney and Imax revealed yesterday that The Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience will be released for one week in select Imax 3D theaters, simultaneously to the film’s nationwide release in 3D on February 27, 2009.  The Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience is the first of a five-picture deal between Disney and Imax announced last year.

Spin Master Ltd., opens a new office in Mexico this week with Gerardo Yepez appointed as President and GM, Spin Master Mexico.  Yepez, who will re-locate to his native Mexico, was most recently President/Toys, Mega Brands.  He previously founded Mercasistemas, a toy distribution company that later became Mega Bloks LatinoAmerica.  Expected to be operational during the first half of 2009, Spin Master Mexico will launch brand including Bakugan Battle Brawlers later in the year and will establish direct distribution of several of its other brands as well.  The Bakugan Battle Brawlers TV series is scheduled to air on Televisa.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group acquires Snowblind Studios, an indie game development studio that specializes in action/fantasy games.  Based outside of Seattle, Snowblind is best known for its role-playing games including Justice League of Heroes, Champions of Norrath, and Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.  With the acquisition of Snowblind, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment owns three development studios, the other two are Monolith Productions (F.E.A.R.) and TT Games (LEGO Batman: The Videogame).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Hasbro‘s popular game Candy Land is headed to the big screen, with Universal naming Kevin Lima (Enchanted, Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians) to direct and Etan Cohen (Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, screenplay-Tropic Thunder) to pen the picture, per Variety.  Hasbro CEO, Brian Goldner will produce the movie, with Christopher Chase serving as executive producer.

marblemedia acquires the North American format rights to produce a version of the Cartoon Network UK mixed live-action/animated game show Skatoony.  The first season heads into production this spring on episodes in English (13×30) French (13×30). Targeted to Kids/Tweens 8-12, the series is commissioned for Teletoon Canada, where it will premiere in spring 2010.  marblemedia is also developing a corresponding interactive website for Skatoony and its characters.

Spain-based Imira Entertainment has signed its first co-finance and distribution deal with Italian production company Neo Network, which is part of Zodiak Entertainment Group, for the new 2D digital HD animated series SOS Cupids (52×2.5 minute; www.soscupids.com).  RaiSat, the satellite pay TV offering of the Italian Public Broadcaster Rai (Radio Televisione Italiana) has partnered with Imira on the series.  Imira is seeking further partners for show, which it will distribute worldwide (except Italy).  Targeted to Girls 6-12, SOS Cupids is an original idea from Neo Network that revolves around a group of self-styled Super Heroines of Love that aim to solve problems of the heart in a humorous way.

Twenty new episodes of the preschool series In the Night Garden will premiere on CBeebies and the BBC HD channel from Monday, February 9, 2009.  The new episodes will air weekdays at 6p as part of CBeebies’ The Bedtime Hour as well as a simulcast on the BBC HD channel.  Produced by Ragdoll Productions In the Night Garden was created by Andrew Davenport, who also served as co-creator the Teletubbies.

DreamWorks Animation SKG‘s Secrets of The Furious Five, a prequel to Kung Fu Panda, will be released on DVD by Paramount Home Entertainment on March 24, 2009, following its broadcast debut on NBC on February 26.  In Secrets of The Furious Five, Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman will reprieve their roles as Po and Master Shifu, respectively.  The single disc DVD release will also feature a range of bonus material such as a Learn to Draw segment, an activity kit (printables, sound machine, and demos of Activision’s Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa games), Lear the Panda Dance, Do You Kung Fu among others.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cookie Jar Entertainment names Acclaim Games as the exclusive global distributor for the online role-playing fantasy/adventure game Magi-Nation: Battle for the Moonlands.  Acclaim will begin managing the Kids/Tweens 8-14 targeted game before the end of March 2009.  Current Magi-Nation players’ accounts will migrate to Acclaim during this period, with all in-game items and points acquired moving along with them.  Information about the transfer is available at www.magi-nation.com .

RDF Kids inks a raft of new licensing deals for the preschool series Yo Gabba Gabba! in Australia.  Produced by Wildbrain and The Magic Store, Yo Gabba Gabba! broadcast in Australia on ABC and Nick Jr, both of which have picked up the second season of the series for air later this year.  RDF Kids names Merchantwise as the agent to represent the series across Australia, which in turn has inked new licensing deals including: Funtastic (footwear and fashion accessories); Caprice (bedding); Hunter Leisure (stationery, arts and crafts); and Brand Direct (swimwear and headwear). Additionally, Funtastic will distribute the Spin Master toy line.  Simon & Schuster is the publishing partner. ABC Roadshow will handle the DVD rights.  Recently Wildbrain has completed a range of consumer products deals for the property in the US.

Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) names Asylum Entertainment as the video game partner to create games based on the Horrid Henry brand.  The first Horrid Henry video game is slated for release on Nintendo DS and Wii for holiday 2009.
