~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Two culinary series received renewal news yesterday: FOX approved a fifth season of Kitchen Nightmares featuring chef Gordon Ramsay as he travels around the US reviving struggling restaurants.  FOX ordered 16 episodes from ITV Studios America and Optomen in association with A. Smith & Co. Productions.  Arthur Smith, Kent Weed, Patricia Llewellyn and Ramsay serve as executive producers.  Bravo ordered a tenth season of Top Chef.  The city location for the tenth season has not been revealed.

Docu-series Ice Pilots will join The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) primetime lineup on March 5 at 9p.  The series follows Arctic aviators as they fly vintage war planes to haul people, fuel and supplies to the remote outposts in the Canadian North.  The series is produced by Omni Films and has six half-hour episodes.

Also early in March, TLC will bow new series My Crazy Obsession on March 7 at 10p.  The series is an extension of its successful special, My Collection Obsession which aired last fall and pulled in 1.4 million total viewers.  The eight-episode series will take viewers inside people’s homes to see unbelievable, one-of-a-kind treasures and collections such as a Cabbage Patch Kids doll collection totaling more than 5,000 or a woman who is obsessed with the color pink.  My Crazy Obsession is produced for TLC by Sharp Entertainment LLC.

ABC Family renewed The Secret Life of the American Teenager for a fifth season.  The series is back for its fourth season starting March 26.

In other renewal news, TV Land gave a second season nod to original sitcom The Exes which so far has averaged 1.5 million total viewers.   TV Land will premiere the second season of The Exes in June and will pair it with the new original sitcom, Have Faith (wt) starring Cedric “The Entertainer” and Niecy Nash.

The US Spanish-language premiere of the eight-part miniseries Los Pilares de la Tierra (Pillars of the Earth) begins on Vme March 26 at 10p.  Based on the novel by Ken Follett, this epic miniseries was produced by Tandem Communications and Muse Entertainment in association with Scott Free Films.

Monday’s season four premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race at 9p on Logo delivered an average 0.6 rating with A18-49.  The 90-minute opening episode also brought in 481,000 total viewers.  Following at 1030p, Logo opened the season premiere of the companion series, Untucked: RuPaul’s Drag Race which had its most-watched debut ever at an average of 254,000 viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Starz Entertainment and Lionsgate made a multi-year licensing deal that allows Starz access to more than 500 of Lionsgate’s films.  Films will be available to Starz after they have aired on Lionsgate’s jointly-run network Epix.  Film titles in the library include The Expendables, The Last Exorcism, Conan the Barbarian, Abduction, Margin Call, Red State, Precious, Rambo and From Paris With Love.  Other older film titles include Crash, Monster’s Ball and Reservoir Dogs.

An agreement was reached between The Inspiration Networks and Comcast for the launch of its flagship network, INSP throughout Illinois, northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.  The launches will happen over the next few months.

Daily lifestyle series The Better Show was renewed by the Meredith Corporation for a sixth season beginning September 2012.  To date, the show has been cleared in four out of the top five US TV markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia and has been sold in 135 other cities.  Station groups that have picked up The Better Show for fall 2012 are CBS, Lin, Sinclair, Hearst, Newport, Gray, Northwest and New Age.

BBC Worldwide America’s Sales and Distribution unit made a licensing agreement with LINK TV, an international news and cultural programming network.  LINK TV will air a selection of BBC Worldwide documentaries and series including the docu-series Tribal Wives and shows from Panorama, the BBC’s investigative and current affairs outlet.  LINK TV will begin airing Tribal Wives this Saturday at 1030p with an encore airing on Sunday at 8p.  The series will air Saturdays and Sundays at the same times through March 11 with repeats throughout the year.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC picked up the multi-camera comedy Malibu Country from Reba McEntire who is attached to executive produce and star.  The half-hour project is about a woman (McEntire) who divorces her cheating husband and moves her family from Nashville to Malibu where she will try to restart her own singing career.  ABC Studios is producing with Kevin Abbott on board as writer.  Laura Ziskin Productions’ Pam Williams, Dave Stewart and Acme Productions’ Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel are all involved along with McEntire’s manager, Narvel Blackstock.

ABC also approved another half-hour single-camera project called Prairie Dogs from husband and wife writing/EP duo Jackie and Jeff Filgo (That ’70s Show, The New Adventures of Old Christine).  ABC Studios is producing the project about Neil, an uncool cubicle worker who is the victim of identity theft and works at one of the coolest companies in the world.  When Neil discovers the thief has created a more exciting life than his own, he engages the charismatic conman to help him change his life.

Showtime’s drama pilot, Masters of Sex has cast Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan in the leading roles where they will portray 1960’s human sexuality pioneers William Masters and Virginia Johnson.  John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) will direct the pilot and production begins this March in New York.  Executive producers include Michelle Ashford, Judith Verno, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly; Sheen and Tammy Rosen are producers.  Sony Pictures Television is producing.

Ordering a new reality series, ABC Family gave the go-ahead to Beverly Hills Nannies, a docu-series following a group of nannies working with families living in the 90210 zip code of Beverly Hills.  Evolution Media, the company behind Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and The Real Housewives of Orange County, is producing and production will begin soon.  ABC Family also is moving forward on a new multi-camera comedy called Baby Daddy starring Chelsea Kane, Tahj Mowry and Derek Theler.
