Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 3, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Among the new trend predictions made by Deloitte’s Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) for 2006 is that the video game industry will grow and sustain its audience by reaching out to new demographics, most significantly younger girls.  The meat and potatoes of the gaming world is currently comprised of young males.  To reach a new audience, the game industry will introduce new game genres, which they say will sustain the industry’s overall growth by increasing its target market. TMT points to crossover game titles such as The Sims as proof girls like games and will further embrace the genre when catered to.  TMT also suggests that manufacturers and game publishers should be developing products/services specifically designed for the female market.

The Weinstein Company has acquired the North American distribution rights to the CG-animated feature comedy Igor from Exodus Film Group.  Screenplay by Chris McKenna (American Dad), the movie revolves around Igor, a mad scientist’s lab assistant with a dream: to become a scientist himself and win the top prize at the Evil Science Fair.  Neither a director nor cast for the Igor movie has been announced.  John D. Eraklis will produce  with animation executive Max Howard (The Lion King, Space Jam) serving as executive producer.  Exodus’ upcoming animated short, Igor: Unholy Frijoles, features Christian Slater as the voice of Igor, with other cast members including Jay Leno, Steve Buscemi, and John Cleese.

Principal photography will begin February 6 on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, at England’s Leavesden Studios.  Directing this time around is David Yates, from a screenplay by Michael Goldenberg.  The movie is produced by Potter film series producer David Heyman and David Barron.  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be released in 2007.

Pre-production has begun on Disney and Walden Media‘s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the film version of the second book in C.S. Lewis’ Narnia Chronicles.  As we mentioned yesterday, Andrew Adamson will direct.

SpongeBob SquarePants stars in Lost in Time, a 30m special premiering on Nickelodeon February 20 at 8p.  Following a freak jousting accident at a medieval-themed restaurant, and really who hasn’t see that happen, SpongeBob and Patrick find themselves transported to the middle ages version of Bikini Bottom where they are mistaken for great knights.

To support the release of his new movie Eight Below, actor Paul Walker will serve as host of Starz Kids & Family evening of winter themed movies, February 16 beginning at 6p.  The evening kicks off with On the Set: Eight Below, a behind the scenes look at the movie.  Movies for the evening include Into Thin Air: Death on Everest, Alaska and The Snow Walker.  Below Eight opens nationwide on Friday, February 17.

MGM Inc. has named Jeff Pryor to the newly created post of EVP/Corporate Communications, reporting to MGM Chairman Harry S. Sloan.  Pryor will direct and oversee the communication/public relations strategies for all of MGM operating divisions.  Pryor will also be involved in the communication and publicity strategies and campaigns for MGM’s international TV channels.  Pryor, who has worked with just about everyone and been part of the launch of 30+ TV channels, established his company Priority Public Relations (f/k/a Pryor & Associates) almost 16 years ago.  Priority Public Relations will continue under the direction of Kristien Brada-Thompson in the US and Marylou Johnston in Europe.  Pryor will remain as a consultant to Priority Public Relations.

Terry Press has joined DreamWorks Animation as its worldwide Head/Marketing.  Press spent the past 10 years with DreamWorks SKG heading up its Marketing group.  Press will oversee all marketing for DreamWorks Animation and will serve as the senior liaison with the Paramount’s marketing team.

IDT Entertainment has appointed Amorette Jones as its EVP/Marketing.  Jones, will be responsible for all marketing and branding strategies for IDT Entertainment, with her first project being IDT’s CG-animated feature film, Yankee Irving (August 2006).  She will report to Neil Braun, President/Feature Films & Television.  Previously Jones was head of Worldwide Marketing for Artisan Pictures.

Nickelodeon Japan named Ed Wells as VP/GM. In this newly created position, he will oversee operations in Japan as well as partnering with Nickelodeon Consumer Products on growth in the country’s market.  Ed was previously senior director/business development and program sales for Viacom International Japan.  He will report to Peter Bullard, EVP/Viacom International Japan.
