Cynopsis: Kids!
02/03/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, February 3, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Among the new trend predictions made by Deloitte’s Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) for 2006 is that the video game industry will grow and sustain its audience by reaching out to new demographics, most significantly younger girls. The meat and potatoes of the gaming world is currently comprised of young males. To reach a new audience, the game industry will introduce new game genres, which they say will sustain the industry’s overall growth by increasing its target market. TMT points to crossover game titles such as The Sims as proof girls like games and will further embrace the genre when catered to. TMT also suggests that manufacturers and game publishers should be developing products/services specifically designed for the female market.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
The Weinstein Company has acquired the North American distribution rights to the CG-animated feature comedy Igor from Exodus Film Group. Screenplay by Chris McKenna (American Dad), the movie revolves around Igor, a mad scientist’s lab assistant with a dream: to become a scientist himself and win the top prize at the Evil Science Fair. Neither a director nor cast for the Igor movie has been announced. John D. Eraklis will produce with animation executive Max Howard (The Lion King, Space Jam) serving as executive producer. Exodus’ upcoming animated short, Igor: Unholy Frijoles, features Christian Slater as the voice of Igor, with other cast members including Jay Leno, Steve Buscemi, and John Cleese.
Principal photography will begin February 6 on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, at England’s Leavesden Studios. Directing this time around is David Yates, from a screenplay by Michael Goldenberg. The movie is produced by Potter film series producer David Heyman and David Barron. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be released in 2007.
Pre-production has begun on Disney and Walden Media‘s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the film version of the second book in C.S. Lewis’ Narnia Chronicles. As we mentioned yesterday, Andrew Adamson will direct.
MORE KIDS STUFF
SpongeBob SquarePants stars in Lost in Time, a 30m special premiering on Nickelodeon February 20 at 8p. Following a freak jousting accident at a medieval-themed restaurant, and really who hasn’t see that happen, SpongeBob and Patrick find themselves transported to the middle ages version of Bikini Bottom where they are mistaken for great knights.
To support the release of his new movie Eight Below, actor Paul Walker will serve as host of Starz Kids & Family evening of winter themed movies, February 16 beginning at 6p. The evening kicks off with On the Set: Eight Below, a behind the scenes look at the movie. Movies for the evening include Into Thin Air: Death on Everest, Alaska and The Snow Walker. Below Eight opens nationwide on Friday, February 17.
