CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

02/17/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 17, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Amazon is looking to take on iTunes in the music download business, according to the Wall Street Journal.  The online retailer is in the throws of negotiations with several record labels, including Universal, Sony BMG, Warner Bros. and EMI, as well as with manufactures of digital music players about a new subscription-based music download service that could debut as early as this summer.  Amazon will offer music at a discounted price, or even at a monthly flat fee, possibly with deals similar to some mobile phone carriers, where in exchange for a long-term subscription agreement a consumer might receive an Amazon-branded digital music player.  The WSJ suggested that Samsung would be the ones to produce the branded digital players of the retailer.  Amazon is also considering providing subscribers with a device that is pre-loaded with music that would be based on a consumers previous music purchases on its website.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. has begun production on its live action feature film adaptation of Nancy Drew, starring Emma Roberts (Unfabulous) as the teenaged super sleuth.  The movie is based on the characters from the Nancy Drew book series by Carolyn Keene.  Cast members also include Tate Donovan as Nancy’s Dad, Carson Drew, and Josh Fitter and Max Thieriot.  Nancy Drew is currently scheduled to be released globally in 2007.

Walden Media and Disney‘s movie adaptation of Katherine Paterson’s novel, Bridge to Terabithia has begun production in Auckland, New Zealand.  Making his live-action directorial debut is Gabor Csupo, animator, producer and principle in the Klasky/Csupo animation studio.  The movie is set for a spring 2007 release.  Bridge to Terabithia is being produced by Hal Lieberman, the incomparable Lauren Levine and David Paterson, who also penned the screenplay, based on his Mother’s novel, with revisions by Jeff Stockwell and Kevin Wade.

Elsewhere, Walden Media has tapped Bobby Moresco to adapt Mike Lupica’s upcoming baseball novel Heat for the big screen, per Variety.  Moresco co-wrote the movie Crash with Paul Haggis.  Heat revolves around a talented baseball playing 12-yr-old Cuban boy who has immigrated to the US and now lives not far from Yankee Stadium.  His dream of playing in the Little League World Series is dashed when he is accused of being over the league’s age limit.

Nickelodeon has given the go-ahead for two animated pilots according to Variety.  First up is Super Scout from comedienne Amy Poehler (SNL) who will serve as Executive Producer and will also provide the voice for the protagonist Bessie Higgenbottom, a Honeybee with superhero dreams.  The pilot will be penned by Erik Weise (SpongeBob) and Cynthia True (former Fairly OddParents writer), with additional voice-over cast members to include Andy Richter, Sarah Thrye and Kevin Hart..  The second pilot, Diggs Tailwagger, comes from Derek Drymon, formerly Creative Director/SpongeBob SquarePants.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Playhouse Disney launches its new short-form series Feeling Good with JoJo this Monday as part of Movin’ and Groovin’ with JoJo Week, February 20-24 (8:55a).  Featuring JoJo the clown from the series JoJo’s Circus, The Feeling Good with JoJo shorts aim to build self-esteem and life-long habits in preschoolers through stretching and other movement activities and music.  Feeling Good with JoJo will air daily at 7:55 and 10:25a beginning February 27.

MARKETING/LICENSING

America’s adored figure skating champ Michelle Kwan has signed a multi-year agreement with Disney to serve as a celebrity representative and spokesperson across its various businesses.  Under the deal Kwan will participate in an array of company efforts such as advertising, promotions, PSAs, guest and personal appearances.  Kwan returned from the Olympic Games in Italy earlier this week, having withdrawn from the games due to an injury.

Barnes & Noble, Inc. has signed an exclusive agreement with 13-yr-old opera singer Holly Stell, for CD and in-store performances.  Stell is preparing for a multi-city tour during which she will perform at select Barnes & Noble stores beginning next month.  Stell’s current CD features a duet with Andrea Bocelli, which is on the soundtrack of the movie, the Lazarus Child.  Her schedule of in-store performances can be found on www.bn.com.
