Cynopsis: Kids!

12/07/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 7, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Sesame Workshop celebrates and honors Joan Ganz Cooney, one of the creators of Sesame Street about 40 years ago, by launching The Joan Ganz Cooney Center ( www.joanganzcooneycenter.org), which will operate as an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit research and production institute.  Focusing on the needs of elementary school age kids, The JGCC will conduct and support research, create new media properties, and encouraging open dialogue, the JGCC, will entertain the same question Ganz Cooney and her colleagues asked some 40 years ago, “How can emerging media help children learn?”  Based at Sesame Workshop, the JGCC will work closely with universities and industry partners that are working in cutting edge media and learning innovations.  New media platforms such as the web, mobile phones and video games will be examined to better understand their role in kid’s literacy development both in school and out.  The JGCC’s inaugural report, The Enduring Power of Pow! Wham!: Children, Digital Media, and Our Nation’s Future, examines the needs of elementary school kids, a group more deeply immersed in media than any previous group, with results looking the lack of educational content offered within the various media offerings available through the various avenues, as well as at the ever growing digital divide.

Lionsgate extends its partnership with MGA Entertainment, on the heels of the release of the live-action picture Bratz: The Movie on DVD (November 2007).  Under the new terms of the partnership Lionsgate becomes the sole US distributor for the full Bratz DVD catalog, including the first five titles previously distributed in the US by Fox.  Lionsgate will distribute two new animated Bratz DVD titles in 2008 in the US, Canada and UK, the first of which, Bratz Kidz Fairy Tales, is slated for February.  Lionsgate has also picked up the North American VOD/EST rights for the Bratz catalog and VOD/EST UK/Eire rights for two new titles in 2008.  Additionally, Lionsgate will release new Bratz interactive DVDs based on an agreement with Bratz licensee XLT.

Peter Orton, founder and Chairman of HIT Entertainment, has passed away following a long battle with cancer.  Orton, who was 64, left HIT in 2005 when the company was acquired by APAX, and is credited with introducing the world to characters including Bob the Builder, Barney the Dinosaur, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Pingu among others.  In addition to being a driving force in kid’s entertainment industry, Orton and his wife, both avid National Hunt Racing fans, have bred a number of horses that have gone on to compete in a range of events.  Orton also served Chairman of the Head and Neck Cancer Research Trust.
