CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

12/23/05

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 23, 2005, and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Comcast Corporation will launch a Family programming package with an average of 35-40 channels in the beginning of 2006. The new Family Tier will include 16 networks of primarily G-rated content, all local/national broadcast channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, UPN, WB, FOX and PBS), religious broadcast shows, Hispanic channels (such as Univision and Telemundo) and public access programming.  In addition to the 20-25 Basic Cable Tier channels, the Family Tier will include Disney Channel, HGTV, Toon Disney, Food Network, PBS KIDS Sprout, DIY, Discovery Kids, CNN Headline News, Science Channel (Discovery), The Weather Channel, Nickelodeon/Nick Too, National Geographic, Nickelodeon GAS (Games and Sports), C-SPAN, C-SPAN 2 and TBN (Trinity Broadcasting).  The new package will be launched nationally in markets with Comcast’s Digital Cable service. Aside from CNN, notably absent are the Turner Networks and most particularly Cartoon Network (perhaps a result of its Adult Swim block which is definitely not for kids) and digital kids network Boomerang.

Judge Ronald Whyte, US District Judge for the Northern District of California, has handed down a temporary injunction preventing the state of California’s from implementing its new videogame law scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2006, that restricts the sale or rental of video games to minors. Last October the Entertainment Software Association and the VSDA filed a lawsuit claiming the new law was a violation of its First Amendment rights to free speech.  Apparently, the Judge agreed.  His decision read in part: “games are protected by the First Amendment and that plaintiffs are likely to prevail in their argument that the Act violates the First Amendment.”  Judges in Illinois and Michigan have issued similar injunctions in these final months of 2005.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. has entered into a deal with Microsoft to be a licensed game publisher for Xbox software in North America and Europe. Under the agreement, Mad Catz will publish software titles that will be officially endorsed by Microsoft and carry the Xbox license logo.  Prior to this agreement Mad Catz was known primarily as a third party videogame accessory manufacturer, having co-published only a few games for the PS2 and Xbox gaming/entertainment systems.

Vivendi Universal Games is in development on a videogame based on Fox’s upcoming animated film Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, a sequel to Ice Age.  The Ice Age 2: The Meltdown video game will be available in stores this spring 2006 for the PS2, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and PC.  The movie is scheduled to be released March 31, 2006.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Under a new licensing agreement Televisa will serve as the licensing agent for Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc.‘s CGI animated action property Dragon Booster in Mexico.  A boy-targeted series, Dragon Booster launched on Televisa in Mexico last September and airs weekly on the network.  Televisa will oversee the development and domestic launches of all merchandising product, working with Alliance Atlantis appointed partners.  Dragon Booster airs on ABC Family/Toon Disney (US), as well as airing in Canada, the UK, Australia, Latin American, and most recently in France.  It’s scheduled to launch in Spain in January 2006.

GoComics, a wireless content provider, has launched its new online store ( www.gocomics.com ), which features wallpapers and animations for mobile phone including notable comics such as Doonesbury, Garfield, FoxTrot, Cathy, Opus, The Boondocks and Ziggy.  GoComics also features a range of content from manga titles as well as indie titles, and recently added art from the children’s book Olivia and Mary Engelbreit.

Friday Fun Fact: The letters appearing on the four sides of a dreidel refer to the Miracle of Hanukkah. They spell out: Nun (N-miracle), Gadol (G-great), Hayah (H-happened) and Shin (S-there, meaning in Israel), together meaning “A Great Miracle Happened There.”  (Although we’ve learned that the spelling of these four sides changes with the different sources we checked.) Taking turns, each player spins the Dreidel.  If it lands on Nes, nothing happens and the next plans spins.  If it lands on Gadol, the player takes all the candy or tokens in the pot. If it lands on Haya, the player takes half the pot. And if it lands on Sham, the player must put one token into the pot.  Game ends when the pot is empty, and the winner is the player with the most tokens or candies.

Answer to yesterday’s trivia question:  This Pint-sized pitchman with a boisterous hip-hop attitude had a “thirst” for sprite. Who was he? MILES THIRST.  Kudos to: EJ Offurum-Horizon Media Inc/NY, Elyssa Kramer-Cartoon Network/Atlanta, Hank Bordowitz-The Bordowitz Media Werx/Suffern; John Bickenbach-Global Icons/LA

No Trivia Question Today – we’re gone until the New Year.  See you all on January 3, 2006!
