Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 14, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

This may sound like a tall tale, but … at auction yesterday at Sotheby’s in London, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a single book of fairy tales (five tales to be exact) created/handwritten/illustrated by J.K. Rowling, sold for just under US$4 million.  And to answer your first question, there were multiple bidders with London-based art dealer, Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox, winning out.  The money from the sale will go to benefit The Children’s Voice, a charity established by Rowling and a member of the House of Lords.  You may recall that Rowling created seven copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, six of which she gave to individuals associated with her Harry Potter stories.  Rowling introduced the concept of The Tales of Beedle the Bard in the seventh and final Harry Potter novel, in which Dumbledore leaves the book (chock full of clues) to Hermione.  For those intent on getting in on the historical event, there is a limited edition commemorative booklet, which provides a look at the contents of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, are (or were as of yesterday) still available from the auction house at its London and NY galleries and online (, for between $12(ish)-$16(ish), depending if you have it mailed to you or you stop by the gallery.  Similarly, proceeds from the booklets will also go to The Children’s Voice.

JimJam, the new 24/7 pre-school TV channel, is set to launch its first feed across Central Europe, adding a further 1.4 million subscribers.  Overall the Central European channel in addition to the existing JimJam channel on Sky Italia kid’s package, is expected to be available in 6+ million households by early 2008.  JimJam recently reached four new territories and is now be carried on UPC Broadband, Europe’s largest cable network, in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and dubbed into English, Polish, Hungarian and Czech.  A Romanian channel due to launch in January 2008, with additional debuts across Western Europe, Asia and other territories also slated for 2008.  JimJam is a joint venture of HIT Entertainment and Chellomedia.

American football-themed anime series EyeShield 21, from the popular Shonen Jump manga, will debut on Cartoon Network and VIZ Media’s Toonami Jetstream beginning December 17.

Teshkeel Media Group, KSC, the Kuwait-based publisher of comics and other kid’s entertainment, teams with Cartoon Network to publish Arabic and English-language versions of Cartoon Network Magazine in the Middle East and North Africa (aka the MENA region). Under the partnership, Teshkeel will publish 9 issues (32-pages each) of the magazine every year, each of which will feature comics based on the network’s properties, puzzles, games, and give-a-ways.  Targeted to kids 6-12, Teshkeel distributed its first issue of the magazine across MENA in November 2007

Kabillion, the kid centric entertainment broadband site, launches a new mash up tool called Little Director, which allows kids to create animated videos from drawings and stories they submit to the site.  For a fee of $19.95 will put together a 90-second short complete with music and color animation and send it to the kid’s home as a DVD or digital download.

This week marks the Dolphin Entertainment and Penguin Children’s Books release of the Roxy Hunter book series in the US, which are based on the Roxy Hunter TV movies airing, four of which will air on Nickelodeon. The first two Roxy Hunter books are based on and have the same titles as the first two TV movies, The Mystery of the Moody Ghost, which debuted on Nickelodeon in October, with The Secret of the Shaman slated to bow on the network February 1, 2008.  Additionally, each of these two books comes with The Roxy Hunter Case Files that directly corresponds to the two TV movies.  Tracey West authors both Roxy Hunter books, while James Kee and Robin Dunne pen the two Case Files.
