Cynopsis: Kids!
12/14/07
Good morning. It’s Friday, December 14, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.
This may sound like a tall tale, but … at auction yesterday at Sotheby’s in London, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a single book of fairy tales (five tales to be exact) created/handwritten/illustrated by J.K. Rowling, sold for just under US$4 million. And to answer your first question, there were multiple bidders with London-based art dealer, Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox, winning out. The money from the sale will go to benefit The Children’s Voice, a charity established by Rowling and a member of the House of Lords. You may recall that Rowling created seven copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, six of which she gave to individuals associated with her Harry Potter stories. Rowling introduced the concept of The Tales of Beedle the Bard in the seventh and final Harry Potter novel, in which Dumbledore leaves the book (chock full of clues) to Hermione. For those intent on getting in on the historical event, there is a limited edition commemorative booklet, which provides a look at the contents of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, are (or were as of yesterday) still available from the auction house at its London and NY galleries and online (sothebys.com), for between $12(ish)-$16(ish), depending if you have it mailed to you or you stop by the gallery. Similarly, proceeds from the booklets will also go to The Children’s Voice.
