Cynopsis: Kids!

12/12/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 12, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The deal that would have seen distributor Entertainment One acquire DHX Media has fallen apart.  In September of this year Entertainment One and DHX Media announced the takeover deal that at the time was valued at US$66 million, and had been set to close by January 31, 2009.  Entertainment One explains that, “senior lenders to the Company [Entertainment One] indicated that consent for the Proposed Transaction would not be attainable under the original terms and timetable.”  Entertainment One had requested an extension beyond January to complete the deal, which was rejected by DHX.  Consent of Entertainment One’s senior lenders was a condition of closing of the original deal terms.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Director Thor Freudenthal (Hotel for Dogs) will direct the movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid for Fox 2000, which is slated for a 2010 release, per The Hollywood Reporter.  The movie is based on author Jeff Kinney’s eponymous book for kids/tweens 9-12.

DreamWorks Animation‘s CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg laid out the company’s film release plans through 2101 in NYC yesterday in front of Wall Street investors, where he showcased upcoming new 3D movie Monsters vs. Aliens (March 26, 2009), according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The line-up includes: Kung Fu Panda 2 set for release in June 2011; Madagascar 3 for release in summer 2012; and for 2010 the fourth Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, and Mastermind.  Additionally, DreamWorks’ COO Ann Daly said that NBC has ordered two TV specials for holiday 2009, a Monsters Thanksgiving and Madagascar Christmas special.  Adding that Kung Fu Panda and Shrek specials are on the slate for 2010.  Nickelodeon has already ordered up a second season of The Penguins of Madagascar and a series pilot based on Kung Fu Panda.  And of course Shrek: The Musical opens on Broadway this weekend!
