Following Paula Abdul’s announcement she will be leaving FOX’s American Idol, the network’s Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice revealed at the Television Critics Association tour the network would use guest judges until a permanent replacement is found. Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham will a guest judge for one episode and singer Katy Perry is also booked. Epix, the premium television network formed by Viacom, MGM and Lionsgate, made a distribution deal with Samuel Goldwyn Co. for all Epix platforms involving up to 20 of Goldwyn’s theatrical films coming out in 2010 and 2011. This deal marks Epix’s first with a production company not owned by one of the network’s partners. Most of Goldwyn’s 2010 and 2011 movie slate has not been announced with the exception of next year’s The Yellow Handkerchief produced by Arthur Cohn and headlined by William Hurt, Maria Bello, Kristen Stewart and Eddie Redmayne.

HBO is developing a single camera comedy called Enlightened featuring actress Laura Dern as a woman who wants to change her self-destructive ways after having a spiritual awakening which causes further havoc in her life. Syfy will once again work with director/producer Bryan Singer (Superman Returns, X-Men) as well as producer Andrew Deane and Keith Addis on the development of a yet-to-be-titled six-hour limited series. The new untitled project will be penned by Michael Petroni and Michael Bond and the network is developing it with Singer’s Bad Hat Harry Productions and Deane and Addis of Industry Entertainment. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Thursday brought a reminder of the vulnerability of web based services as multiple social networking services including Facebook and Twitter were hit by “denial of service” attacks, designed to overwhelm servers with traffic to prohibit users from accessing them. As sites have limited capacity to handle a deluge of such requests, huge slowdowns or crashes inevitably ensue. Security experts note that such attacks are becoming more and more common and that stiffer penalties should be enacted to dissuade hackers from launching such malware. (Google’s motto alone, Don’t be Evil, just isn’t enough to dissuade them.)    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Send it On, a new song for Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green initiative, performed by Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, premieres today on Radio Disney.  The song will be available on iTunes beginning Tuesday, August 11, with all proceeds benefiting environmental charities via the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.  The music video for Send it On is set to premiere Friday, August 14 on Disney Channel and Saturday, August 15 on and ABC.  Additionally, Disney Channel will debut the 30-minute special, Lights, Camera, Take Action! Backstage with Disney’s Friends for Change, a behind the scenes look at the campaign, on Friday, August 28, after the premiere of the new TV movie, Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie (8-10p). Full edition: CYN KIDS.
