Cyn opsis: Kids!

08/04/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 4, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Rainbow Media’s sportskool VOD network, featuring some kid-targeted shows with expert sports instruction/coaching, launches its new series Streetball this week.  Shot on location at the real courts of Behagen Park in the Bronx, New York, Streetball is hosted by Waliyy “Main Event” Dixon and rapper Chuck D, from Public Enemy who offer lessons in ways of playground basketball, aka streetball.  Waliyy “Main Event” Dixon began playing ball when he was 9 years old and he has is now one of, if not the best known, streetball players in the sport.  Dixon is currently competing in the 2006 And 1 Mixtape Tour.

Universal is the new home for the Hellboy franchise, according to Variety.  The studio will fully finance and distribute Hellboy 2, from director Guillermo del Toro who also helmed the first Hellboy movie in 2004, which are both based on the Hellboy comic books.  Returning for the second movie is Ron Perlman, as Hellboy, and Selma Blair as his gal pal.  Hellboy 2 is expected to begin production in April 2007 in Budapest and London, and currently scheduled for release in summer 2008.  The first Hellboy movie was produced by Revolution Studios and distributed by Columbia.

MORE KIDS STUFF

How many adolescents does it take to screw in a light bulb?  I don’t care – I hate you – wanna go to the movies!  Yes, I live with a 14 year-old walking hormone.  Nickelodeon will look at that strange and moody world of puberty in Nick news with Linda Ellerbee: The Worst Years of My Life?  Scheduled to run Sunday, August 20, 8:30p, the show features kids across the country talking about the many physical, social and emotional issues that occur during puberty.  Additionally, viewers will get a chance to hear from some celebrities including Jon Stewart, Cynthia Nixon, Megan Mullally, Taylor Hicks, Tony Hawk, Jewel and Nelly Furtado about their stories from growing up and assure kids that everyone goes through the adolescent years and that life is pretty good on the other side.

RDF Media Group Plc, has acquired indie kid’s TV producer The Foundation TV Productions (Foundation), which is best known for its preschool series The Basil Brush Show.  The purchase of Foundation feeds directly into RDF’s strategy to expand further into the kid/family entertainment market.  Nigel Pickard, RDF Television’s Director/Family Entertainment will work closely with Foundation to develop new shows for UK and international broadcasters.  Founded 12-years ago by Vanessa Hill and Ged Allen, Foundation is based at The Maidstone Studios, Kent and produces shows in a range of genres including preschool, family, comedy, drama and factual.  Foundation is currently producing shows for BBC and ITV.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Videogame publisher Crave Entertainment has released LarryBoy and the Bad Apple, the first Veggie Tales interactive videogame title.  The game features LarryBoy, the crime fighting alter-ego of Larry the cucumber and his butler Alfred (played by Archibald Asparagus) as they go up against the evils of temptation to save the towns people.  The game is available for PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance.

Justice, a retailer of tween apparel for girls 7-14, has published and distributed its first catazine to some 1 million tween girls.  Yes, catazine, a cross between a magazine and catalog.  The term that has been around for the last few years and it is pretty much the Razzels of the catalog business, you know  “Razzels, first it’s a candy then it’s a gum,” so given the order of the words in this case, first it’s a catalog and then it’s a magazine, or maybe just a coaster.  At any rate, the Justice catazine is a direct mail piece that is sent directly to tween girls.  The catazine, the first of three to be sent this year, is 52 pages and features back-to-school apparel.  Justice, a unit of Tween Brands, Inc, which also operates Limited Too, opened its first store in 2004 and plays to open upwards of 70 new stores this year and about 100 next year.

Kids in the San Francisco Bay Area will be able to get a free ride all this month as part of the BART’s (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Kids Ride Free Saturdays program.  Sponsored by San Francisco based VIZ Media, the manga publishing/animation/licensing company, the program lets kids under 12 with the special Kids Ride Free flash pass.  BART has also joined with the California Academy of Sciences, the Oakland A’s and Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to offer special discounts to kids who travel on BART as part of the Kids Ride Free program.  VIZ Media will hand out free goodie bags including manga, anime, posters etc. to kids at Powell Street Station on August 26th.  Come September VIZ’s manga and anime properties including Inuyasha, Pokemon, Naruto, Zatch Bell! And Fullmetal Alchemist will appear on the back of 1 million BART tickets.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Chelsye J. Burrows has been upped to the newly created position of VP/Programming Publicity, Starz Entertainment Group LLC.  Burrows, who had been Executive Director/Corporate Communications, will continue reporting to Tom Southwick, SVP/Corporate Communications.  Burrows will be responsible for generating publicity for all SEG programming including programming on the Starz and Encore linear channels, SEG’s on demand services and the MoviePlex, RetroPlex, and IndiePlex channels, as well as for sweepstakes and events sponsored by Starz and co-sponsored with Starz affiliates.  Prior to joining Starz in 1999, Burrows toiled for Uniworld Group, Inc. in NYC, HBO and for Burson Marsteller Chicago.

Friday Fun Fact: Prize fights prior to the turn of the century lasted up to more than a hundred rounds (rounds were often determined by knockdowns.) The fighters used bare knuckles (no gloves.)
