08/25/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 25, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

CBS’ announcement that the newest cycle of Survivor will begin with the contestants being divided into ethnic groups, has caused a stir in New York City.  City Councilman John Liu, an Asian-American, says “The idea of having a battle of the races is preposterous. How could anybody be so desperate for ratings?”  CBS responded with this statement: “CBS fully recognizes the controversial nature of this format but has full confidence in the producers and their ability to produce the program in a responsible manner. ‘Survivor’ is a program that is no stranger to controversy and has always answered its critics on the screen.”  Survivor is produced by Mark Burnett Productions.  Councilman Liu is asking CBS to reconsider airing the show.

Tonight’s Finales:
USA:  Monk at 9p, Psych at 10p

Tonight’s Premiere:
HBO:  Real Time With Bill Maher at 11p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Next month, CBS will introduce a new marketing campaign which combines outdoor advertising and wireless distribution. Mobile customers will be able to download free clips from CBS’ primetime shows directly at CBS Outdoor billboards using MobiZone, a service created by Kameleon Technologies. Located in Grand Central Station in New York City, the billboards will enable a person to watch a clip from a number of CBS programs including Shark, Smith, Jericho, The Class and CSI. Once a viewer activates their cell phone or PDA, the clip is downloaded via Bluetooth connectivity and then played on their wireless screen almost instantly. The content then can be saved or passed on to someone else.

MyNetworkTV has signed seven new affiliates taking the U.S. clearance to 167 stations, or more than 96% of the country. Debuting on September 5, the network is now cleared in the top 50 U.S. markets. The new stations are: KAUT & KAUT-DT/Oklahoma City; WNAC/Providence; WRGT-DT2/Dayton; WNGT/Toledo; KMMF/Missoula; KLMN/Great Falls; and KBTZ/Butte-Bozeman.

Dr. Bob Arnot gets his fill of dangerous situations as host of the new show Dr. Danger. The hi-def series will air on MOJO on INHD and will premiere nationally September 17 at 9p. The first season shows Dr. Bob traveling to various countries in Africa seeking adventures. The first episode will be an hour in length, with subsequent shows at a half-hour each.

To gain additional awareness for some of its new and returning primetime shows, CBS will stream episodes free on its broadband channel innertube. Starting next month, the series available will be Shark, How I Met Your Mother and The Unit, all from Twentieth Century Fox Television; and The Class, Smith and The New Adventures of Old Christine from Warner Bros. Television. For each show, the first four episodes will be available free to viewers to watch on innertube for a week following its network broadcast.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

Harry Lennix has been signed as a recurring character on Fox‘s drama series 24.

Court TV will add the reality series Most Shocking to its R.E.D. primetime action block this year in fourth quarter. The show, produced by Nash Entertainment, will showcase crimes caught on tape in its 13 episodes.

MTV has ordered up eight episodes each for two new reality projects, both produced in Hawaii:   Island Fever is about a group of friends who among all the tourists coming in and out of their lives, try to remain loyal and true in their own relationships; and Living Lahaina about a group who work as surf instructors at the Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy on Maui. Both series are expected to debut in first qtr 2007.

NBC has ordered up a comedy pilot called Broken Home about an ex-beauty queen mom who moves to California to live with her gay son and help him remodel his home.  The pilot is from Abraham Higginbotham who also worked on Arrested Development.

And a project for consideration at Fox – a comedy called Work Wife, about a man who attempts to balance the relationship with his “work wife” and his real wife. This project comes from Brad Copeland and Barbie Feldman-Adler, both also former Arrested Development writers.

Casting Call: TLC is looking for real married couples who are close to divorcing for its new series Marriage Boot Camp. The couples will experience a 4-day intensive therapy session to give their marriage a final chance. All types of marital troubles will be considered and the couples must be able to travel to Dallas for a five-day filming stint. For more information, go to www.marriagebootcamp.tv or http://www.themarriagebootcamp.com/marriage_seminar_pilot.php.

Friday Fun Fact:  A one-minute kiss burns 26 calories.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1944 – After more than 4 dark years of Nazi occupation, Paris is liberated by the United States 4th Infantry Division and the French 2nd Armored Division.  Fortunately, German General Dietrich von Choltitz defied Hitler’s order to burn the city and all its monuments to the ground prior to any surrender.  After the signed surrender, French General Charles de Gaulle led a joyous liberation march down the Champs d’Elysees.

Today’s Trivia Question in Honor of Emmy Week and courtesy of The Emmys, by Thomas O’Neil: Everybody knows Susan Lucci was nominated 17 times before winning the Daytime Emmy Award for her role in All My Children.  Another actress had the same experience in primetime, having been nominated 16 times and never won.  Who was she?   (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
