Programming clarification: From the network, TV One will premiere new series Parole Diaries on September 12 at 10p.

As an ongoing feature on Fridays, Cynopsis will be including a series of Q&As asking interesting people in our industry five questions. This new feature continues today with Scott Lee, EVP/Managing Director at MediaVest/Publicis Group.  Scott has around 15 group client directors reporting to him directly.

Scott, thank you for speaking with me. First, please tell us your background and how you got into advertising.

I have always been passionate about advertising and have been in the business for more than 20 years; always on the media buying/planning side.  MediaVest is a full-service media specialist company.  Our clients include the world’s leading marketers such as Microsoft, Kraft, P&G, The Coca-Cola Company and Walmart.

Television continues to be the prevailing screen in use in most American homes.  Please tell us if you think television will continue to stay on top with consumers and do you have any predictions for national advertising expenditures in the next few years? Will National TV still dominate most national client’s budgets?

For consumers, TV will still be dominant into the near future even though the amount of TV viewing has gone down slightly.  There is more multi-tasking going on while watching TV.  We (at MediaVest) look at TV from a total market activation perspective with content not necessarily on channels; taking at look at messaging from across multi-platforms.  We will see the steepest growth in the future with online and mobile though TV will probably continue to have the most influence with live events such as sports.  The recent TV ratings for NBC and the Summer Olympics as well as their online viewing blew away everyone’s expectations.

Again, I think national TV will continue to be strong in the next few years. The most recent TV Upfront proved that.  There is still a big appetite for TV though other emerging media and more online video choices will change the landscape and we will be watching it unfold.  There will be more ROI with marketers moving toward a more total market approach.  More and more, ROI will be a big driver to push for efficiency.  On the local level and because it is a political year, it is a hugely robust year for the local markets. Will that continue without all the political ad spending?  Probably not, we will see numbers go back to normal levels and maybe down some in the future.

As you said, MediaVest represents many top national brands from Coca-Cola, P&G and Walmart among others.  Please relate an example of a recent campaign that created a lot of national buzz and tell us about the components of the media campaign and what made it work.

At MediaVest, we build a holistic program for our advertisers in everything we do.  A media campaign may have a TV element with social media surrounding everything else.  One great example happened last year with the Wheat Thins brand from Kraft.  We did a branded activation piece on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report that lasted 7 minutes – the longest in Colbert’s history and the first time he had ever dedicated an entire segment to a brand!  Colbert was stuffing his mouth to where he couldn’t speak with Wheat Thins – it was pretty amazing! We surrounded the on-air piece with lots of digital and social.  The results were outstanding: 5,000+ social mentions; 2,000+ new Twitter followers; 6,000+ new Facebook fans in the days immediately following the airing.  With 760,000+ views to date, this episode is the most streamed episode in the history of The Colbert Report.

To view the Wheat Thins integration on The Colbert Report, Scott graciously included this link: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/409087/february-23-2012/wheat-thins-sponsortunity.

Let’s talk next about the freshman slate of TV shows for the 2012-2013 broadcast season.  Please give us your predictions on which ones you think will become break-out hits?  Also please share your thoughts on the new crop of daytime talk shows in national syndication debuting this fall.  Do you think any one in particular will become as popular and long-lasting as The Oprah Winfrey Show?

There are a few new comedies this fall that look good to me like The New Normal and Animal Practice on NBC and The Mindy Project on FOX.  They may be around for awhile.  What about the news Michael J. Fox is coming back to star in a comedy on NBC a year from now?   I am a big fan of Michael J. Fox’s and have high hopes for it.  I hope it’s a big success for him and it’s great to see him out there again.

There are some interesting new additions in the talk show category though there will be no Oprah replacement.  With a huge name like Oprah it would be hard for another talk show to break out  to even come close to matching the numbers The Oprah Winfrey Show got. Katie Couric’s show will likely have a good following as she is loved by everyone and Katie will do well.  Steve Harvey seems to have some buzz and he got some nice clearances next to Ellen.

We are ending all of our Cynopsis Q&As with the same question: after a typical busy work week, how do you unwind on a Friday evening?

I just usually go home to Connecticut and in the summer hang out in the backyard with a glass of scotch. We do have some long weeks around here and to get ready for the weekend, I just like to chill out.

~PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Film, television and theater producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were tapped to produce the 85th Academy Awards.  This is the duo’s first time to produce the Oscars which airs live on ABC February 24.

ABC handed a put-pilot commitment to Accidentally on Purpose writer/producer Andrea Abbate for a family comedy based on her own life.  Crazy Gene is a single-camera comedy about Abbate’s own experiences.  21 Laps’ Abbate, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements and Shawn Levy will serve as EPs with 20th Television producing.

Justin Spitzer, the co-EP for NBC’s The Office just sold an ensemble comedy script to NBC about a group of friends whose lives change on the way to a destination wedding.  Spitzer a year ago signed an overall deal with Universal Media which will produce the project.  Spitzer will write and be the EP with Peter Traugott and Rachel Kaplan as EPs through their Universal TV-based TBD Productions.

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) is producing and hosting a new reality docu-series for CNN next spring titled Inside Man.  Spurlock will delve into “rarely seen sectors of American life” which would include marijuana growers, migrant farm workers, gun lovers and more.

ABC Family has approved tow new drama pilots: The Fosters (wt) from executive producer Jennifer Lopez and Socio from executive producer Gavin Polone.  The Fosters is a one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms.  Nuyorican Productions, Inc. and Prodco, Inc. are producing.  Socio is also a one-hour drama about a 16-year old alleged sociopath who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood and becomes the prime suspect when one is murdered. Prodco, Inc. is producing.

AMC’s The Killing may resurrect on either Neflix or DirecTVFox TV Studios has had early talks with both companies to pick up the series for a third season.  Nothing is official.

Maulik Pancholy will return to NBC’s 30 Rock for its final season in a recurring capacity, reprising his role as Jack Donaghy’s (Alec Baldwin) adoring assistant, Jonathan.  Last season, Pancholy appeared on NBC’s sitcom Whitney.

Kevin Sussman will be listed as a series regular on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory for the upcoming sixth season.  Sussman has recurred since the second season playing Stuart, the owner of the comic book shop.  The Big Bang Theory is back on CBS starting September 27 at 8p as a lead in to Two and a Half Men.

Season three of IFC’s original comedy series Portlandia will see Chloe Sevigny (Big Love, American Horror Story) join as Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein’s roommate Alexandra.  Sevigny will appear in multiple episodes during the third season which is in production now and debuts in January with ten all-new episodes on IFC.

Former All My Children actress Brittany Allen landed a recurring role on Syfy’s upcoming series Defiance.  Allen will play Tirra, a troubled employee of the town madam, Kenya (Mia Kirshner).  Defiance is currently in production in Toronto and is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

Sprague Graden will join AMC’s drama pilot, Low Winter Sun, per TVLine.  The drama is based on a UK series of the same name and is described as a modern-day story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption.  Graden will play the ruthless Elena, the wife of an organized crime syndicate member Damon played by James Ransone.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Bell Media’s SPACE in Canada ordered the new original scripted drama series Bitten from No Equal Entertainment and Hoodwink Entertainment of Vancouver and Toronto’s Entertainment One (eOne).  The series is based on the novels Women of the Otherworld by Canadian author Kelley Armstrong.  Thirteen one-hour episodes have been ordered with production to begin next spring in Toronto.

Canada’s Tricon Films & Television picked up the crime series I Didn’t Do It with seven one-hour episodes and produced by Lively Media for international distribution.  I Didn’t Do It is currently airing on Investigation Discovery in the US, Discover Canada and Crime & Investigation UK.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) now holds a majority stake in British production company Left Bank Pictures.  The move signals SPT is making a foray into scripted production in the UK.  Under this new deal, SPT will also distribute future Left Bank Pictures television content, both finished programming and formats and will further have a first-look distribution option on feature films produced by the company.  Left Bank Pictures has been involved with a number of international co-productions with partners such as HBO and Mediaset.  Left Bank Pictures’ productions include Wallander (BBC), Mad Dogs (Sky), Strike Back (Sky/HBO Cinemax), Cardinal Burns (E4) and DCI Banks (ITV).

UK’s Crime & Investigation Network, part of A+E Networks UK and a joint venture between A+E Networks, and BSkyB has commissioned ITV Studios to produce the series Britain’s Darkest Taboos with six one-hour episodes.  The new series looks at some of Britain’s most shocking family nightmares using family interviews, unseen footage and reconstructions.

More programming news from across the pond… broadcaster and comedienne Sue Perkins will star in the new comedy Heading Out for BBC Two commissioned by Kristian Smith, Executive Editor at Comedy Commissioning.  The series, written by Perkins has six half-hour episodes and is a co-production between RED Production Company and Square Peg TV, Perkins’ production company with Debi Allen.  The plot is about Sara (Perkins), a skilled, successful veterinarian who is afraid to tell her parent’s she is gay.  Production on Heading Out begins production next month and is expected to premiere next year on BBC Two.
