Good morning, it’s Friday, August 21, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Taking advantage of streaming rights it baked into its rights package with The Weinstein Co., Lifetime Digital will buck the cable trend and offer up to 5 full episodes at a time of Project Runway and the new Models of the Runway exclusively on MyLifetime.com. (No authentication or cable subscription needed.) Lifetime will delay the episodes until Saturday (following their Thur. night on-air premiere,) and follow ABC’s model of interspersing five 30 second ads within the videos. Also, the network will not syndicate the show out to other outlets – not even iTunes. Along with full episodes, the Project Runway site will include a number of other initiatives:
- The Project Runway Buzz Room will aggregate Twitter and Facebook posts around show hash tags and keywords
- Tim Gunn’s Work Room will include extra commentary each week from the host
- Casual games will include interactive dress-up closets powered by recent acquisition Roiworld

A group of newspapers are banding together to form a digital sports content alliance, enabling dailies such as The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, the Star Tribune of Minneapolis, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to trade stories and columns through a restricted website, per Editor & Publisher. The national sports model was proposed in Feb. at a meeting of the AP Sports Editors.
FremantleMedia’s Gaming division and MGM Interactive are teaming to develop a selection of MGM movies and TV shows into online casino-style games for operators and players in select international territories (outside of the U.S.). Under the agreement, FM Gaming will have the exclusive rights to develop games based on properties such as Fame, the Stargate franchise, Robocop and the classic Sergio Leone-helmed “Spaghetti Westerns.”
WGN celebrates the 25th Anniversary of The Cosby Show (has it been that long?) beginning Sept. 20 with a series of on air tributes, a viewer’s choice marathon, an online contest and an online trivia game. Vote for your favorite episodes here through Sept. 14.
YouTube engineers, in addition to rolling out new ad formats and packaging options, are also experimenting with a more sophisticated online video recommendation engine, according to the WSJ. Research shows that users spend more time on the site if they’re presented with additional videos that go beyond rudimentary keyword search prompts. YouTube is also rolling out additional discovery mechanisms including personalized recommendations based on viewing history.
Online video monetization platform Ooyala signed a deal with Brazil-based online movie rental service NetMovies to power a new web-based movie streaming offering.
Social dating service The Dolce Network has launched its first professionally-themed online dating service targeting the law profession. Lawdate.com, which starts at $20/mo., provides a platform though which single lawyers can blog, IM and post profiles, with a specialized search feature designed to match folks with compatible demographic data. (Is there an online pre-nup questionnaire?) Lawdate.com is just the first in a planned series of professionally-themed dating sites, to be followed by TheDrDate.com, CapitolHillDate.com and, you guessed it, EntertainmentIndustryDate.com.

The Adify Vertical Gauge report, measuring brand marketing CPMs for premium inventory across 13 vertical ad network categories, revealed a significant uptick in real estate and sports CPM from all campaigns that have run on the Adify platform since Oct. 1, 2008. Adify’s ad network template is used by companies Martha Stewart and POLITICO to create vertical ad networks. Trends since Oct. of last year across the network include:
- Real Estate CPMs grew 100% between Q4 2008 and Q2 2009. Real estate ($6.49 in Q2 2009) is the most noteworthy CPM growth
- The sports vertical ($7.09) dipped slightly in Q1 2009, but is up 18% in Q2
- Entertainment has grown steadily (up 19%) since Oct. 2008
- In Q2, news-oriented content commanded CPMs with a median value over $10, a 20% growth over Q4 2008, but it has decreased since Q1 2009
- Travel, technology, automotive, and health held onto the highest absolute CPMs, despite fluctuations. These have the highest rates among premium vertical ad networks
- Technology ($16.01) has begun to rebound and both automotive ($15.33) and travel ($19.89) have grown since Q4 2008
As Apple prepares the release of iTunes 9, the rumor mill continues to churn regarding its capabilities. Some of the more intriguing ones is that it will support DVD importing (as it does with CDs), notes Mac Insider - a move that would involve groundbreaking negotiations with the movie studios. (RealNetwork’s DVD Ripper product is currently held up in court due to a concerted effort by the studios to prevent its release.) Other (more likely) features for iTunes 9 include Facebook integration allowing users to promote new songs and playlists on their Facebook profiles.
Verizon FiOS, which recently introduced an on-screen marketplace for its TV widgets, is getting ready to complete mobile phone integrations that will enable smartphone users to utilize their handsets as a remote control, per Dow Jones. AT&T has already launched such functionality for its U-Verse IPTV service utilizing an IPhone app.
IP video specialist Envivio unveiled its latest video encoder/transcoder product, the 4Caster C4 HD, claiming it increases measurable video quality by as much as 35% over previous generations. The company is marketing it to telcos, IPTV service providers and broadcasters.
Addressing one of the chief obstacles to monetizing mobile television, Qualcomm subsidiary FLO TV has introduced an audience measurement service powered by Portland-based Rentrak, providing the industry’s first comprehensive viewership and advertising impression reporting utilizing Rentrak’s second-by-second TV Essentials measurement system. FLO TV, which is currently working to integrate the system within its 20-channel service, will provide ongoing reports to content providers and advertisers to assist them in programming and media buying decisions. Early reports generated from the system have come up with some interesting trends and usage stats on the FLO TV platform:
- The average daily viewer spends over 30 min. watching FLO
- Mobile usage peaks at 1PM, similar to online video’s primetime
- Special live news coverage and live sports continue to draw the highest viewership
- The Michael Jackson Memorial on July 7, 2009 was the most-viewed event in FLO TV history, with the average viewer watching for 49 minutes
- Animation continues to be one of the strongest performers on FLO TV; other popular genres include soap operas, game shows, reality, comedy and crime dramas
RealNetworks announced the global release of the RealPlayer SP, software that enables users to upload internet videos on multiple devices including an iPod, iPhone, BlackBerry Palm Pre or an Xbox 360 and share it with others via Twitter and Facebook. Compatible with the latest version of IE, Firefox or Google Chrome (sorry Safari users), the free version of the app supports the H.264 video format and the $40 version supports DVD conversion. RealPlayer SP has generated more than 22 million video downloads since it was released in Beta this past June, according to RealNetworks.

Like it or not, Twitter has become a factor in the weekly movie box office derby that determines the ultimate success of a big-budget picture. The microblogging service was widely blamed earlier this summer when the Sacha Baron Cohen’s comedy Bruno raked in $14 million at the US & Canadian box office during its first day then dropped by 39% during its second day as Twitter users complained about some of its raunchier scenes. What’s more disturbing for marketers is how instantaneous the platform is; many moviegoers will tweet the moment they exit the theater, potentially affecting later showings the same day. Of course the platform can also be a positive. An aggressive Twitter campaign for Sony Pictures release District 9 helped generate interest in the film and post-viewing tweets have been mostly positive. (It finished the weekend with $37 million.) To get a feel for which way the wind is blowing, Google District 9 Twitter then click on “show more results from twitter.com” to see a ranked selection of tweets. Horror master Wes Craven, whose Tweet comes up first, saw it Wednesday night and says “it rocks.” British Open winner Stewart Cink’s review was more mixed: “slow start, good plot story, not too far out on sci fi front, so so ending.” What ever that means.
