CCI Entertainment – Beyond Imagination

Cynopsis: Kids!
08/01/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 1, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing, presented for the first time with graphic elements!  Let us know what you think!

J.K. Rowling announced on her website yesterday plans for the release of The Tales of Beedle the Bard to the masses.  You’ll recall that there are only six copies of the original version of the book in existence.  The Tales of Beedle the Bard will be published on December 4, 2008, by Rowling’s charity, Children’s High Level Group, in an exclusive agreement with publishers Bloomsbury and Scholastic and with Amazon.  All proceeds will go to the charity.  There will be a regular edition ($7.59) as well as a limited number of collector’s edition ($100, which will include 10 additional illustrations not featured in the standard or even the original group of books), both of which can be pre-ordered now exclusively at Amazon.  According to Rolling, “the new edition will include the Tales themselves, translated from the original runes by Hermione Granger, and with illustrations by me, but also notes by Professor Albus Dumbledore,” these notes were of course found in his papers following his death.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

BRB Internacional is developing a new HD 3D animated series titled The Secret Life of Suckers (104×2), which it is co-producing with Screen 21, Genoma Animation and Televisio de Catalunya.  Described as an “urban animated series with a hip hop beat,” the series is a sit-com about life as seen through a car window, all through the use of plush dolls, or “art toys,” each with its own style and personality (e.g. a gothic doll, a hip hop speaker, a spooky panda, etc) that live in cars.

Director/Producer Sam Raimi (the Spider-Man movies, Evil Dead) is partnering with Disney to develop a new superhero movie, The Transplants, per Reuters.  The Transplants is an action/adventure movie, which will also feature a healthy dose of comedy, and features a script by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson, who were both part of the writing team for Not Another Teen Movie (Sony/Columbia, 2001).  Raimi will produce The Transplants.

Speaking of Spider-Man … Sony is reportedly going ahead with a script for a new movie project based on the character Venom, the villainous character that was in Spider-Man 3, per The Hollywood Reporter.  The report notes that neither Sony nor Marvel commented on the news.

A little more sand will need to travel through the hourglass before we get to see the feature film adaptation of the video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, as Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer announce the shift in the release date for the movie to Friday, May 28, 2010, which is Memorial Day weekend.  Directed by Mike Newell, the movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Alfred Molina, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton.  The movie, which had been set for release on June 19, 2009, will now rollout in the week between DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek the Fourth and Marvel Studios’ Thor.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Lionsgate acquires the US home entertainment distribution rights to Marvel Entertainment’s new animated series Wolverine & The X-Men (26×30). A co-production with Toonz Entertainment, Singapore and First Serve International, Wolverine & The X-Men is slated to bow on Nicktoons Network from January 2009.  The deal expands on Lionsgate’s partnership with Marvel that includes original animated direct-to-DVD features based on Marvel’s characters, with the next title , Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow, set for a September 2, 2008 release.  The next move that will be released under the Lionsgate and Marvel theatrical relationship is The Punisher: War Zone in December 2008.

Decode Entertainment receives a third season pick-up from Canada’s Family Channel for its live-action teen-targeted series The Latest Buzz.  The new season of 26 episodes will bring the total number of The Latest Buzz to 65×22.  Additionally, Decode Enterprises has inked a number of sales with international broadcasters for the series including Cartoon Network Latin America, Nickelodeon Spain, Digiturk (Turkey), RTE (Ireland) and VRAK.TV (Canada) all picking up seasons one and two (39×22), with Cartoon Network Germany taking season one.  Decode Entertainment and Decode Enterprises are both subsidiaries of DHX Media.

Warner Home Video‘s new Scooby-Doo original direct-to-DVD movie, Scooby-Doo & The Goblin King, scares its way to retail on September 23, 2008 in time for Halloween season.  In addition to being released on DVD, Scooby-Doo & The Goblin King will also make its TV debut on Cartoon Network this fall.  The movie features a host of celebrity voice-overs including, Hayden Panettiere, Jay Leno, Lauren Bacall, Tim Curry and Jim Belushi, Wayne Knight, and Wally Shawn, among others.  Bonus extras on the DVD include the Scooby-Doo You Believe in Magic? featurette, which shows viewers how to perform some magic tricks.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation (NIHFF) and The Advertising Council will launch the second set of multimedia public service announcements (PSAs) next week to support its Inspiring Invention campaign, which aims to make inventing and the process of inventing a part of the lives of American kid/tweens 8-11 now and in the future.  The campaign was created in conjunction with ad agency Publicis & Hal Riney.  The new PSAs continue to direct kids/tweens/parents to www.inventnow.org, a site designed by Visual Perspectives Internet (VPI).  Upon the launch of the new PSAs the website will offer a showroom, developed by Driftlab, where the inventions in the PSAs will be featured along with a series of interactive games and inventor’s tool kit.

MARKETING/LICENSING

United Media (UM) inks a deal to serve as the licensing and merchandising agent for Random House Children’s book series Babymouse across the US and Canada.  UM will work closely with the series creators, Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm, to develop the licensing and merchandising program for the property, with an initial focus on apparel, accessories, stationery, gifts, back-to-school, interactive, toys and crafts.  Targeted to Girls 6-11, the Babymouse series currently includes eight book titles, with an additional two titles set for release each year moving forward.

NCircle Entertainment will release two new Will & Dewitt DVD titles, Frog-tastic Family Fun! and My BFF (Best Frog Friend) in the US on August 26 as part of its home entertainment distribution deal with Cookie Jar Entertainment.  Under an agreement with Procter & Gamble, Cookie Jar optioned rights to use the frog featured on the packaging of P&G’s Kandoo toddler personal care line to play a featured role in the animated TV series.  So, to support the release of the DVDs, NCircle is working with P&G to share shelf space at select US grocery stores, which will place the DVDs alongside Kandoo products.  Furthermore, the DVD titles will offer a coupon for $1 0ff Kandoo products.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Razor & Tie Entertainment promotes Victor Zaraya to EVP/Finance & Operations.   He will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the company as well as playing a key role in Razor & Tie’s kid’s business, record label, publishing division and digital and media business.  Zaraya, who had been SVP/Finance & Operations, will report directly to the company’s co-owners Cliff Chenfeld and Craig Balsam.
