Cynopsis: Kids!

08/15/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Warner Bros.‘ announced late yesterday that it has moved back the release date of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the movie based on J.K. Rowling’s sixth HP book, to now open day-and-date domestically and in major international markets on July 17, 2009, versus the original November 21, 2008 date.  Alan Horn, President and COO/Warner Bros., explained there are two reasons for the shift, 1) summer is “an ideal window” for a big family releases (where two HP movies previously debuted), and 2) the writers’ strike earlier this year “impacted the readiness of scripts for other films,” and changed the competitive movie release landscape, thus affording the studio new opportunities for 2009.  The studio underlined that the production schedule for Half-Blood Prince and other forthcoming HP movies remain in tact and are not affected by this move.  Production begins on the two-part movie adaptation of the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in February 2009.

The Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince shift won’t change Imax’s plans to release the movie for the really big screen in its new place, part of which will be in 3D, per a Dow Jones report.  Imax, which has plans already to release Transformers 2 on June 26, 2009, says it will release both movies without issue according to the report.  This fall Imax will release DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 2 on November 7 for a two-week run as planned, and is considering several options to fill the initial HP slot.

Following Warner Bros.’ movie Potter shift, Disney has moved the release of its family-centric 3D animated movie, Bolt, by one week settling into the November 21, 2008 date that was previously home to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

US President Bush signed into law the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.  The new legislation, passed by Congress last month, bans lead paint and phthalates in kid’s toys in an effort to toys and consumer products targeted to kids less than 12 years old.  The legislation also underlines and expands the authority of the Consumer Products Safety Commission.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D  California) praised the new law saying it will help provide parents with peace of mind and that it will, “strengthen our ability to prevent unsafe toys from being sold, remove from the shelves more quickly products that are found to be harmful, and increases fines and penalties for violating product safety laws.”

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nickelodeon Latin America has begun filming its first original tween-targeted telenovela, titled Isa TKM (Te Quiero Mucho). The co-production with Sony Pictures Television International is being produced in Venezuela with local talent and customized in Portuguese for Nickelodeon Brazil. The series, which revolves around a teen on the verge of her first romance, will air weekdays at 7p from September 29, 2008.

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffery Katzenberg discussed the studio’s plans to produce a third Madagascar movie and a Kung Fu Panda sequel at a preview for Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which releases November 7, 2008, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  More news about the Kung Fu Panda sequel is expected to come in 30-60 days.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Jetix Europe inks a deal with Pokemon USA to air 11th Pokemon series, Pokemon: Diamond & Pearl: Battle Dimension (52×22), on its channels across EMEA.  Under the pact Pokemon series 11 will begin airing on Jetix in the UK for the first time.  Additionally, the agreement gives Jetix Europe the pay TV rights and TV VOD rights to the series in select territories.

Candlewick Press acquires noted kid/young adult author Kate DiCamillo’s new novel, The Magician’s Elephant, for release in fall 2009, according to Publishers Weekly.  The book has already been optioned to Fox 2000 for a feature film.  Almost all of DiCamillo’s previous books (there are many) have been published by Candlewick including Because of Winn Dixie, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and The Tale of Despereaux, the latter of which will be released as a Universal animated feature on December 19, 2008.  HarperCollins/Colter will publish DiCamillo’s upcoming picture book Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken, illustrated by Harry Bliss, on September 23, 2008.

The TV Teacher, LLC releases the new DVD Strokes, Shapes & Scenes, the third title in a series of educational DVDs designed for special needs kids.  Strokes, Shapes & Scenes aims to help kids living with Autism, Down Syndrome and other special needs learn pre-writing and creative drawing skills.

MARKETING/LICENSING

WeeWorld, a teen-targeted (13+ years-old) avatar-based social network, and FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) enter into a licensing deal to grow the WeeWorld brand.  According to the deal, FME will work with its North American and UK licensing partners to develop new WeeWorld, and its WeeMee avatars, related products.  Additionally, FME will manage licensing of the brand across a range of categories including collectibles, apparel, home, toys and gifts.

Lucasfilm Ltd. shares a bit of The Force with McDonald’s with a Star Wars: The Clone Wars themed Happy Meal, available August 15  September 11, 2008.  The new Happy Meal features a collection of 18 bobble-head toys including classic Star Wars and The Clone Wars characters, each of which comes posed on a Star Wars vehicle and includes a ‘playable feature’ (e.g. Darth Vader’s breathing).  Additionally, the promotion offers a Star Wars: the Clone Wars Happy Meal Virtual World, where Yoda leads visitors on an adventure and kids can use special codes found on Happy Meal packaging to unlock content on the site.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Gary Dale is named COO/Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.  Dale, who had been EVP, will be responsible for Take-Two’s publishing labels, while also continuing to oversee the company’s sales activities, international expansion and business development efforts.  He will continue to report to CEO Ben Feder.  Dale previously served as COO/Rockstar Games, and prior to that was European Managing Director/Capcom Entertainment, Inc., he was also President/Interactive Software and Video Division of BMG Entertainment until Take-Two acquired BMG Interactive.
