Cynopsis

04.03.09

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning briefing.  By the time you’re reading this, I will likely be somewhere over the Atlantic on my way home. Ah, I can smell the Starbucks from here …

Tonight’s Premiere:
Animal Planet: Escape to Chimp Eden at 9p
BBC America: Mistresses at 9p
SCI FI Channel: Stargate: Continuum at 9p
HGTV: Bang for Your Buck at 930p

Sunday’s Premieres:
HGTV: Good Buy, Bad Buy? at 1230p
Animal Planet: Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom at 7p; River Monsters at 10p
Food Network: Food Network Challenge at 8p
Gospel Music Channel: Best of Stellar at 8p
HBO: In Treatment at 9p; Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices at 11p
Showtime: The Tudors at 9p
Spike TV: Fast Machines with Funkmaster Flex at 1030p

WHDH/Boston, the NBC affiliate in the #5 market, announced on its website it will not be airing the network’s planned Jay Leno show at 10p Mon-Friday this fall, choosing instead to produce a local one hour news program to air nightly at 10p.  The station’s owner, Sunbeam Television’s Ed Ansin, has told the Boston Globe newspaper “We feel we have a real opportunity with running the news at 10 pm. We don’t think the Leno show is going to be effective in primetime. It will be detrimental to our 11 o’clock. It will be very adverse to our finances.”  NBC is not happy with the news, and responded to the Globe with this comment from John Eck, President/NBC Television Network: “WHDH’s move is a flagrant violation of the terms of their contract with NBC. If they persist, we will strip WHDH of its NBC affiliation. We have a number of other strong options in the Boston market, including using our existing broadcast license to launch an NBC owned and operated station.”  WHDH claims it has a “unique agreement” with the network which does allow the station to make this programming choice, a claim NBC says is “absolutely wrong.”  The station had also asked the network for permission to air Jay Leno’s show at 11p, which would in turn push back The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien to midnight. The network denied the request.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The Pandora’s Box analogy seems to apply perfectly to the dilemma the cable industry now faces. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes defended the company’s “TV Everywhere” concept at a Cable Show keynote yesterday, a scheme to offer access to shows online only to viewers who are also cable TV subscribers. “We’re not trying to take away what you have for free – we’re trying to give you on broadband what they have on television,” he said of the plan, designed to prevent subscribers from cutting their increasingly expensive cable TV subscriptions. The concept continues to gain support among studio heads, despite technical concerns and fear of a backlash from consumers who have grown accustomed to watching their favorite shows online.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Disney Channel‘s gives its new live-action comedy, Jonas, which of course features the Jonas Brothers, a premiere date of Saturday, March 2 at 8p.  The debut episode will be simulcast on Sprint TV and MobiTV and available via DisneyChannel.com, which will also feature exclusive games, video and what they are calling Jonas Videography (a collection of their music videos, interstitials, film and TV clips).  Additionally, exclusive full episode previews of Jonas will be available Saturday, April 25 via Disney Channel on Demand through Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Verizon, RCN, Blueridge, Wide Open West, Comspan, Knology/Prairiewave and Ntelos affiliates.  The weekend of May 1-3 will also include debuts of new episodes of Hannah Montana, Sonny With A Chance, The Suite Life on Deck, and Wizards of Waverly Place.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
