Good morning, it’s Friday, April 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The Pandora’s Box analogy seems to apply perfectly to the dilemma the cable industry now faces. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes defended the company’s “TV Everywhere” concept at a Cable Show keynote yesterday, a scheme to offer access to shows online only to viewers who are also cable TV subscribers. “We’re not trying to take away what you have for free – we’re trying to give you on broadband what they have on television,” he said of the plan, designed to prevent subscribers from cutting their increasingly expensive cable TV subscriptions. The concept continues to gain support among studio heads, despite technical concerns and fear of a backlash from consumers who have grown accustomed to watching their favorite shows online.

“What was important for me in making this story is that one person really can make a
difference…and to show a woman from my part of the world that wasn’t oppressed or
meek, but was instead strong and powerful.”–Mohammed Naqvi, accepting for Shame, 2008 Television Academy Honors

Following its push into hyperlocal ad serving with Citysearch, MySpace launched a new chatty reality gameshow BFF hosted by Last Comic Standing finalist Amy Schumer. A pair of best friends are challenged to answer questions about each other in several rounds and users are invited to try out to be future contestants by submitting their own video intros. Meryl Poster, former Co-President of Production at Miramax Films, former fashion executive, David Rubin, and City Lights Media are producing. Ortho Women’s Health & Urology has signed on to sponsor.
CBS Interactive is bringing the high-quality video player it rolled out for March Madness to its coverage of the Masters at CBSSports.com and Masters.com beginning April 9, upgrading the experience from 800kb/second to up to 1.2 MB/sec. for those with a fat enough pipe. Coverage again includes complete streaming video coverage from the field an hour before the CBS telecast; as well as video from the “Amen Corner” holes from Augusta (holes 11-13) and holes 15 & 16.
VH1 Mobile is turning to text messaging to raise money for music programs in Denver Public Schools, the hometown of synth pop band The Fray. Fans are being asked to donate $5 by texting “SAVE” to 84465. VH1’s Save the Music Foundation will match the first $30,000 given.
Taking a page from the fast growing web discovery site StumpleUpon, Digg launched a new toolbar feature allowing a Digg overlay to be placed on any web page by simply typing “digg.com/” before the URL. The power feature here is the ability to use it to shorten URLs to more easily fit them in Twitter postings, for instance.
We’ll be able to say we knew him when … Wine Library TV creator Gary Vaynerchuk, one of our first WSOTD honorees, signed an increasingly rare 7 figure, 10 book deal with book publisher HarperStudio, per The WSJ. The first book in the series, “Crush It! Turn Your Passion into Profits in a Digital World,” is a tell all about how to build an online empire, due out in Sept.
Pilot Season, that spot-on insider look at Hollywood’s annual new show scramble that appeared on NBCU’s now defunct Trio in 2004, launches on My Damn Channel on April 20 with new episodes appearing every Monday. This could bring huge viewership for the comedic video site as the show received critical acclaim and developed a cult following despite Trio’s limited distribution.

Email security firm Goodmail Systems unveiled its CertifiedVideo solution offers the ability for marketers to add streaming video capabilities within e-mail. AOL will be the first email provider to adopt the service, streaming content from providers such as The New York Times, Country Music TV and LiveNation. The product includes technology to insure that the video emails remain virus free.
Research in Motion shares jumped yesterday upon better than expected quarter earnings and margin guidance and the official launch of the BlackBerry App World. The storefront, which integrates with PayPal for purchases, is off to a promising start but will no doubt suffer in comparisons to Apple’s App Store, offering 160+ games, 90 utilities and a handful of social networking apps.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise. T-Mobile parent Deutsch Telekom, which has exclusive deals to distribute the iPhone in 5 European countries, said that customers who use the new Skype app that enables iPhone and iPod Touch users to make calls without accessing T-Mobile’s 3G network are in breach of contract. The company is reserving the right to block the app.
Clearwire announced plans to introduce an app platform of its own by 2010 based on 4G WiMax technology. The WiMax Innovation Network is being set up, offering free WiMax connectivity within a 20-mile radius of Silicon Valley to encourage developers to create new services and apps for the standard.
Magazine titles have a new option for reaching readers through the iPhone. Digital software developer UIEvolution signed a deal with multiplatform publisher Source Interlink Media to develop an ad supported rich media publishing template for its print brands such as such as Lowrider and Soap Opera Digest. UEI develops mobile apps for number of media brands including AT&T, ESPN, Disney, Square Enix, E! Networks, FOX and MySpace.
ITV vendor Itaas has signed a deal with Cox Communications to support the development of iTV apps written for the MSO’s cable systems nationwide. As part of its iStart Developer Program, Itaas will provide support services for application developers that are creating, launching and testing interactive applications based on the Enhanced Binary Interchange Format (EBIF) standard. Itaas also plans to support applications based on the tru2way platform, running on Cox’s next-generation IPG scheduled to begin roll out this summer.
Starz introduced a new “Enteract Now” iTV feature at the Cable Show this week to better tie linear programming together with on demand options. Consumers will be able to click on an on screen EBIF-formatted icon with their digital remote to be taken to the on demand version of what they’re watching, enabling them to go back to the beginning, pause and fast forward.
iTV software developer Zodiac Interactive named information-technology executive Brandon Brown as its new CEO, replacing Zodiac’s co-founder Michael Rivkin, who will become the company’s Chief Technology Officer. Brandon will oversee the company’s push to develop iTV products for the true2way standard from the company’s headquarters in Valley Stream, N.Y.
While the entertainment industry remains divided over how to deal with the DRM issues around DVDs, studios are missing out on a simple, Green as can be solution to get their content out to folks in a format that virtually every home in America can view – the DVD. Start-up Vladiscast, launched by former CinemaNow CTO Bill Elberg and Director of Acquisitions Jessica Canty, has developed a new distribution platform combining virtual world video streaming with hard copy DVD-Rs. The company launched two new products this week: “GoScreening Public” is an on demand, burn it yourself DVD-R solution allowing indie filmmakers such as members of distribution portal New Filmmakers Online to distribute their works to individual users. Anyone with a PayPal account can purchase a download of a movie then rip it to a DVD-R or watch it on an iPhone. And best of all for the creator, there’s no revenue share. The other product is an industry play. “Go Screening Private,” currently being used as a private extranet by American Cinema International, is a way to send out screeners in small batches. Online, rip-it-yourself DVDs, a product first developed by CinemaNow circa 2000, have come of age from a technological standpoint due to the advances in CPUs and broadband connection speeds and the ubiquity of the DVR-R format, says CEO Bill Elberg. He sees Vladicast as a way for studios to begin making money off catalog titles, either via e-commerce or in an ad supported model, if only they can learn to accept the fact that the CSS (Content Scramble System) algorithm that supposedly protects DVDs from being copied is not worth hanging their hats on. “CSS is a technology that’s been cracked for more than 10 years,” he said. “But unfortunately the studios are still spit on the whole idea of home burning.”
