Cynopsis: Kids!

04/24/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 24, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Not only are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turning 25, rights owner/manager The Mirage Group is developing a new live-action feature film slated for release in 2011.  The new movie, the fifth big-screen Turtles adventure, will focus on the origins of the heroes in a half shell.  Mirage is partnering with producers Scott Mednick (300, Superman Returns, 10,000 BC, and the upcoming Where the Wild Things Are) and Galen Walker (the most recent CG TMNT movie) for the new live action film. The movie is being funded through Lightbox Productions.  4Kids Entertainment, master licensing agency for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property, will handle all the movie merchandise licensing.  Additional info can be found at www.tmnt25.com and www.4kids.tv.

Coolabi Productions enters into a co-production deal with Burberry Productions in Australia for Dead Normal (working title), a new comedy drama series.  Signing on for the series already are CBBC (UK), Nickelodeon Germany and ABC Australia, the latter of which will debut the series in 2010.  Created by writer, Barbara Slade, the series follows the adventures of three pretty and strong-willed teen sisters  who just happen to be ghosts.  Not deterred by their ghostly state, the determined teen gals take off on various fun adventures. The series is to be supported by Screen Australia and Film Victoria with Cake Entertainment taking on the international distribution.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The new Disney Channel Original Movie, Princess Protection Program, staring Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) and Demi Lovato (Camp Rock, Cloudy With a Chance), is set to premiere Friday, June 26 at 8p, on Disney Channel US and Family Channel Canada.  The Royal B.F.F. Extended Edition will be available Tuesday, June 30 on Disney DVD and will include an exclusive new music video of One and the Same performed by Gomez and Lovato, a behind-the-scenes look at the film, and a free B.F.F. necklace set.  Princess Protection Program revolves around a soon-to-be teen princess (Lovato) is taken into a witness protection program when her country is taken over. The teen royal is whisked to live with an PPP agent and his family, including his teenage daughter (Gomez), in rural Louisiana where she must try to fit in until order is restored in her country.

Cartoon Network finds a host in rocker Andrew W. K. for its upcoming live-action competition series Destroy Build Destroy.  Andrew W.K.’s music has been featured in a range of TV series including Aqua Teen Hunger Force, American Dad and Smallville among many others.  Each week the series features two teams of teens, guided by professional mentors, as they use all forms of equipment to … destroy something, rebuild it as something different and then … destroy it again.

Jonas Brothers will host and perform on the Teen Choice 2009, which airs Monday, August 10, 8-10p on Fox.  The Teen Choice Surfboard-shaped awards will recognize bests in movies, TV, sports and so on for 2008-2009.  In addition kicking off the US leg of The Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009 on June 20, the band’s new album Lines, Vines and Trying Times release worldwide on June 15.

Turner Entertainment Networks Asia (TENA) acquires the Indian TV rights to Omkar, a mythological animated TV movie from DQ Entertainment (DQE).  Turner will premiere Omkar on its kids’ networks in India in 2010. This is the third animated movie title that Turner has picked up from DQE for air in India, the other two being Balkand and Ravan.  Omkar revolves around tales of Lord Shiva and his family.  DQE holds the exclusive home video, publishing and global audiovisual rights, outside of Turner’s exclusive territory.

KidsCo launches the preschool series The Wiggles in Western Europe, including in France, Portugal, Spain and Germany.  KidsCo recently debuted in France on Orange TV with both a linear channel and a SVOD service, as well as in Portugal on Clix on IPTV.  Last week KidsCo announced it was teaming with Inspidea, a Malaysia-based digital animation company, to co-produce a new green-themed animated short-form series titled Boo and Me (13×2).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Major League Baseball is teaming for a movie promotion with Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films and their new 3D family-targeted feature film G-Force (July 24, 2009), per AdAge.com.  The MLB/G-Force promotion kicks off during the All Star Game and features multiples tiers including sponsorship of the All Star Game on July 14 (e.g. G-Force branding on in-stadium All-Star ballots at MLB and minor-league parks), G-Force days at MLB ballparks, trading-card and movie ticket giveaways during MLB games.  Additionally, if a player hits a grand slam during All-Star Game, the first 1 million people who register for the G-Force Grand Slam Sweepstakes at Disney.com will get a free ticket to the movie on opening day.  MLB met with resistance for its last promotion attempt for Spider-Man 2 (2004) when fans were not happy with the Spidey signage on the bases and so forth.  Previously, Disney successfully teamed with MLB to promote its movie Angels in the Outfield at the 1994 All-Star Game.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

MTV Networks International ups Nina Hahn to SVP/International Production and Development, Nickelodeon.  She adds responsibilities for made-for-TV movies, as well as sourcing UK live action series, in partnership with Nickelodeon UK, for potential US development.  Based in London, Hahn continues to report to Steve Grieder, EVP, Nickelodeon International.  Hahn will co-report to Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group US’ Brown Johnson, President/Animation and Marjorie Cohn, EVP/Development and Original Programming, and Nick UK’s Howard Litton, SVP and MD.  Congrats to you Nina!
