Cynopsis: DIGITAL

04/24/09

Good morning, it’s Friday, April 24, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Amazon bucked the slumping online retail trend reporting a 24% increase in profits from a year ago, but warned investors not to expect such growth during Q2. Net income totaled $177 million and revenue climbed 18% to $4.89 billion. The company didn’t break out numbers for the much-ballyhooed Kindle 2, but did note that sales “exceeded our most optimistic expectations.” The Seattle area’s other big tech powerhouse Microsoft didn’t fare as well. Net income fell by 32% to $3 billion for FYQ3 amid a global slowdown in the PC market. Analysts continue to worry that leaner and cheaper netbook computers will result in much lower margins for Microsoft as they require only stripped down versions of the Windows OS.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The New York Times and its group of papers are exploring new financial models for its digital businesses that may include once again at charging for content, according to remarks made by Times Co. Chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. at the company’s annual shareholders meeting yesterday.

ESPN and Disney are joining the 3D movie craze, releasing an X Games-themed theatrical movie planned for release in 3D theaters Aug. 21. The documentary will include action footage featuring Xtreme sports personalities such as Shaun White, Travis Pastrana, Danny Way, Ricky Carmichael and Bob Burnquist.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Following the trend to give users instant updates and taking a page from the useful FeedFlix app, YouTube began testing a new social featuring allowing users to let their friends see what videos they’ve been watching. YouTube RealTime, currently in limited beta, tracks a history of recent activities and provides real-time notifications when friends comment on, favorite or upload a video.

My Damn Channel
is returning with a 4th season of David Wain’s sad sack WainyDays on Thursday, May 7. The show continues to attract an impressive roster of guest stars: look for Amanda Peete, Rosemarie DeWitt and Frederick Weller in the new season, among others. The Wainy Days crew is also hosting a live event on May 7 at 92YTribeca in New York featuring stand up from David Wain and live musical performances from past and upcoming episodes.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Univision, which just reached its latest retransmission-consent deal with Verizon’s FiOS TV, unveiled a new self service interactive advertising platform powered by Seattle-based AdReady. A straightforward interface provides advertisers with the tools they need to customize and upload Hispanic-targeted ads that will run on Univision.com and partner sites, offering more than 800 banner ad templates to work from. The system includes credit card billing, reporting and optimization features.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

France Telecom’s Orange unit signed a deal with Wikimedia to provide users with Wikipedia entries through cobranded channels on Orange’s mobile and internet portals. Orange will place ads alongside the entries sharing the revenue with Wikimedia, providing the crowdsourced encyclopedia a brand new revenue stream. The partnership will begin in France, the UK, Spain and Poland before begin extended across Orange’s European footprint.

Netflix had a whale of a quarter reporting a 68% year-over-year increase of net income, totaling $22.4 million for Q1 on revenue of $394.1 million. The online DVD subscription-based rental services finished the quarter with 10.3 million subscribers, an increase of 25% from a year ago.

AT&T, which took over for T-Mobile as the exclusive provider of WiFi at Starbucks in the U.S., reported dramatic growth in the number of users and connections accomplished at its 20 million+ WiFi hotspots. AT&T Wi-Fi connections totaled 10.5 million in the first quarter of 2009 – more than triple the 3.4 million connections in the first quarter of 2008, and more than half AT&T’s 20 million total Wi-Fi connections for all of 2008.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Newspaper websites increased their traffic by 10.5% year-over-year drawing more than 73 million unique visitors on average during Q1, according to a new custom Nielsen Online analysis released by the Newspaper Association of America. Newspaper web site visitors generated an average of more than 3.5 billion page views per month throughout the quarter, an increase of 12.8% over Q1 2008 and a new record for the group.

Papers may need their print counterparts to continue to drive that traffic. A new analysis of Nielsen Online figures from Editor & Publisher finds that traffic dipped 23% to 1.4 million unique users at SeattlePi.com in March after the paper announced it was shuttering its print edition. Conversely SeattleTimes.com picked up uniques, recording a 70% gain from a year ago averaging 1.5 million visitors in March 2009.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Apple stirred up (sorry, bad pun) some bad publicity this week for releasing a 99 cent “Baby Shaker” app for the iPhone that asked players to use the device’s Accelerometer to “Shake the Baby” until it was dead. Apple quickly pulled the app after an ensuing uproar. But now the controversy has put the spotlight back on Apple’s seemingly random review process for App Store releases.

Buddy Media
and Sports Illustrated‘s Golf group introduced a new app available via Facebook Connect, Golf.com and soon for the iPhone allowing golfers to enter and share their scores from virtually any course in the U.S. The app creates a cross-platform leaderboard allowing social groups to compare scores, track handicaps and keep a variety of stats including putts, greens in regulation and fairways hit.

Blockbuster movie game tie-ins are often disappointing but this one actually looks like it might be fun. Paramount Digital Entertainment, Bad Robot and partners announced the launch of a the Star Trek D-A-C shooter game in May, to be available as a download for Xbox Live initially, then later for the PlayStation Network and Windows PC. Up to 12 players can take part in battles between Starfleet and the Romulan Empire in Team Deathmatch, Assault, and Conquest modes.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

News Corp. confirmed that MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe is stepping down as CEO but will continue to serve as strategic advisor and board member of MySpace China. The official word is also that News Corp. Chief Digital Officer Jonathan Miller is currently in discussions with President Tom Anderson about finding him a new role. Former Facebook Chief Operating Officer Owen Van Natta is currently in talks to succeed Mr. DeWolfe as CEO, per the WSJ.

Travel site Kayak.com named Robert Birge as Chief Marketing Officer to manage all offline marketing, advertising and public relations activities, including the planned launch of a major offline advertising campaign later this year. He will report to co-founder and CEO Steve Hafner and will be based at the company’s global headquarters in Norwalk, Conn.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Keeping up with how the government is spending our money is a full time job and WhiteHouse.gov seems to have other things on its mind such as publishing lots of gardening pictures for Earth Day. Independent non-profit news site Pro Publica (tag line: journalism in the public interest) has made it considerably easier with a new resource called Eye on the Bailout. It maintains a comprehensive database of who has received funds, how much has been committed and what is left in the coffers. Color-coded graphics break things down by industry and a handy timeline outlines a chronology of major events, dating back to the $30 billion handout to help JPMorgan Chase acquire Bear Sterns. While you’re at it check out Pro Publica’s ChangeTracker tool powered by Versionista. It keeps an eye on government sites whitehouse.gov, recovery.gov and financialstability.gov then alerts you when any change or deletion is made, including changes to video files. The tool can be used to track changes on any website, for that matter.
