Radio Disney launches a new mobile website and texting program in conjunction with mDisney, which is part of the Disney Internet Group. With the new website, mobile phone users, with web-enabled phones, can receive delivery of Radio Disney information and services, including listening to Radio Disney, view the last 10 songs played on the channel, find local Radio Disney stations, send shout-outs, request songs, view the channel’s top 30 songs, and participate in polls.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
High School Musical’s Ashley Tisdale is in talks with United Artists to star in a remake of the feature film Teen Witch (1989/MGM). Additionally, Tisdale has inked a first look deal with FremantleMedia North America, per Variety.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Whittaker Bay, the teen-targeted 30-minute drama from H20 Entertainment, has joined the Wizzard Media Network, a podcasting network, where the series will debut next month. Whittaker Bay is currently seen on Saturday nights on America One Television.
Entertainment Rights comes out of MIPTV having completed a number of deals:
- Postman Pat Special Delivery Service, a BBC commission, has been acquired for air in Denmark, Sweden, Australia, pan-regionally in the Middle East and Iceland. The new series will bow on CBeebies in fall 2008.
- Toopy and Binoo, the Canadian preschool series based on Author Dominque Jolin’s books, has been sold to broadcasters in Korea and a Free TV channel in the Middle East.
- Shelldon, the CG-animated series targeted to K4-8, and is a new addition to ER’s roster. Early discussions are expected to result in deals over the next few weeks include in the UK, France, multiple Scandinavian and Asian territories.
- The animated George of the Jungle series has been picked up for broadcast by: NRK (Norway); Central Partnership (Russia); Pan Regionally via Nickelodeon (Scandinavia); VRT (Belgium); VRT (Finland); Netherlands Public Broadcasting (The Netherlands); RTE (Ireland); TV2 (Denmark); and RUV (Iceland).
- Casper’s Scare School, the new CG animated series for K4-9, which is currently in production for TF1 (France) and Cartoon Network Europe, has been acquired by: Jetix (Netherlands); DR.TV (Denmark); MYV 3 (Finland); NRK (Norway); and Cartoon Network (Middle East).

MARKETING/LICENSING
PPC Enterprises, the commercial arm of Picture Production Company Group, secures a Master Toy license deal for the preschool CGI animated series Pinky & Perky. PPC Enterprises has licensed the pan-European rights to toy manufacturer Martin Yaffe, which in turn will produce a line of figurines, playsets and plush toys under its Born to Play brand, based on the property. Each of the products will include interactive features in keeping with the series. The products are scheduled to be available at retail from spring 2009, on the heels of the launch of the newly revised Pinky & Perky TV series on CBBC on BBC ONE this fall 2008. PPC Enterprises holds worldwide rights to Pinky & Perky and is looking to extend the brand into publishing, apparel, collectables and home wares.
Turner Broadcasting extends its agreement with Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) for a fifth year. The deal will feature Cartoon Network on TVs in 63 Holiday Inn hotels across the UK. Additionally, at hotels where Cartoon Network is show, kid guests will also receive Cartoon Network merchandise during their stay.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Daniel Wineman is appointed Director/Original Series and Co-productions, Jetix Europe. He will report to Marc Buhaj, SVP/Programming. Wineman joins Jetix Europe from Cartoon Network and Boomerang in the US; where he toiled for the last decade, most recently as Cartoon network Director/Acquisitions and Co-productions.
Scholastic names Dr. Clayton Wilcox as VP/Education and Corporate Relations. In his new role, he will be responsible for building relationships with district administrators, state departments of education and non-governmental organizations. A long-time educator, Wilcox, who currently serves as Superintendent of Schools in Pinellas County, Florida, will report to Dr. Ernie Fleishman, SVP/Education and Corporate Relations.
