30-year NFL broadcaster and Hall of Fame coach, John Madden announced his retirement from broadcasting. Madden has been the game analyst for NBC Sunday Night Football since 2006 and according to B&C, Cris Collinsworth will immediately step into Madden’s place in the booth working alongside Al Michaels. Collinsworth was the co-host and analyst on NBC’s Football Night in America pregame show and NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol said this show will be revamped following Collinsworth’s departure. During Madden’s distinguished career he earned a multitude of awards and accolades including:

  • 16 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Analyst/Personality
  • American Sportscasters Association named Madden the Sports Personality of the Year in 1985 and 1992
  • In 1982, was the first NFL analyst to receive the Golden Mike Award from the Touchdown Club of America
  • As NFL head coach, Madden led the Oakland Raiders to a victory over the Minnesota Vikings during Super Bowl XI.
  • Madden’s .750 winning percentage continues to be the best of any head coach in NFL’s history.
  • Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as Head Coach in 2006

In a statement issued yesterday, Madden said this in part about his decision to retire from broadcasting after 30 years, “It’s been such a great ride… the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion – it still is.  I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have… that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the League… my broadcasting partners Pat and Al… the production people and the fans…is still great… it’s still fun and that’s what it makes it hard and that’s why it took me a few months to make a decision. I still love every part of it – the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people… but I know this is the right time.”

CBS’ The Amazing Race will be back for a 15th cycle this fall. Host Phil Keoghan found out about the renewal while biking cross-country and broke the scoop through his “Phil Keoghan Rides Across America” Twitter site. CBS will follow with the official announcement soon, even though the pick up was expected. Amazing Race will likely have 15 new episodes for its 15th run.

TV Land’s model competition reality series She’s Got The Look, a collaboration with Wilhelmina Models, Inc., is back this June for a second season. The series, giving women 35+ the chance to become the next fashion icon, expands into eight episodes relating the nationwide model search where 20 semi-finalists end up in New York City. For the competition, though, ten finalists take on various challenges while living together in a NYC loft. Supermodel Kim Alexis hosts as the model wannabes compete in photo shoots, a video and fashion runway shows. The final winner gets a contract with Wilhelmina Models, Inc., a photo spread in SELF Magazine plus this season’s winner will now also receive $100,000. She’s Got The Look is an Allison Grodner production.

Logo adds sizzle to its lineup this summer with new and returning series:

  • Beautiful People – British comedy series with six 30m episodes inspired on the childhood of style expert Simon Doonan growing up in suburban Reading, England. Premieres May 26 at 1030p on Logo and LOGOonline.com.
  • Gimme Sugar – Season two centers on Charlene who leaves the L.A. club scene to open a new club in Miami. Premieres June 15 at 10p on Logo and LOGOonline.com.
  • Jeffrey and Cole Casserole – YouTube stars will take viewers through webcams, outrageous sketches and viral videos. Premieres June 19 at 11p on Logo and LOGOonline.com.

For a third year, ACE (Andrea’s Communications Empire) Media Corp. renewed its agreement to represent Turner Broadcasting System’s multi-cultural ad sales for the original first-run syndicated series Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns. ACE further expands its relationship with Turner by also representing the new one-hour drama HawthorRNe starring Jada Pinkett Smith, premiering on TNT June 16.

DTV Update: With just nine weeks until June 12, 3.6 million or 3.2% of US TV households still are completely unready for the digital transition, according to Nielsen.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

TV Azteca, producer of Spanish-language television content, made a deal with Latin American broadcaster Chilevision for the new telenovela, Vuelveme A Querer (Love Me Again). With 130 60m episodes, Vuelveme A Querer will premiere on Chilevision next month.

On the heels of MIPTV where Passion Distribution took 350 hours of Lifetime Television programming and made many international deals involving Matched In Manhattan (7 x 30) and DietTribe (13 x 60) among others, the London and Sydney-based distribution company represents another Lifetime Television format. Face the Family (6 x 30) is about couples who meet their partner’s family over a five-day period alone. The series watches as prospective in-laws either get along with their future son or daughter-in-law or not. Passion Distribution is the exclusive distributor of Lifetime Television programming in all international territories.

NBA TV gets added distribution as the NBA formed a new multiyear agreement with DIRECTV. Starting with the 2009-2010 season, NBA TV will become part of DIRECTV’s Choice Xtra package. DIRECTV will continue carrying the NBA League Pass package of out-of-market games to its subscribers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

VH1 and World Of Wonder Productions are working on a direct-to-series reality project headlined by Fantasia. The series will follow the star as she deals with the ups and downs of fame as a successful recording artist while being a single mother. VH1 will debut the series in early 2010.

Relations between the US and Canada are strengthening as the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) formed the NBC Universal Content Creator Program with a planned launch this fall. The program will bring together Canadian talent working on original concepts to be involved with forums and workshops focused on storytelling, pitching and packaging. NBCU will mentor the talent, helping them to develop their ideas for international audiences.

Showtime tapped Jennifer Jason Leigh for the recurring role as Nancy’s sister on the comedy series Weeds from Lionsgate TV. Nancy, played by Mary-Louise Parker has been on the outs with her older sister, Jill (Leigh) until sends her son Shane to live with her in the suburbs to keep him away from danger. Season five of Weeds opens in June and Leigh is expected to appear in at least two episodes.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Worries about Google proved to be much ado about nothing. The search giant posted better-than-expected net income of $1.42 billion during Q1, up 8% from Q1 2008. Net revenues did actually decline slightly for the quarter – a first for the company, yet they were up 6% over the previous year. Google’s partner sites generated revenues, through AdSense programs, of $1.64 billion in the first quarter of 2009 – a 3% decrease from first quarter 2008. “These results underline both the resilience of our business model and the ongoing potential of the web as users and advertisers shift online,” claimed Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a statement. “Going forward, our priority remains investing for the long term to drive future growth in our core and emerging businesses.”  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: MTV Networks International (MTVNI) launches MTV Impact, a new events division set up and operated by its Emerging Markets group, which together with partners will create and run events, festivals and activities across Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, The Middle East, Africa and India.  Neil Sharma is appointed to head MTV Impact, as Sr. Director and will be based in London.  Kicking things off, MTV Impact inks a partnership in Poland with the city of Gdansk to launch an outdoor two-day live music festival, Festival MTV – Gdansk Dzwiga Muze, which is scheduled for July.  Sharma, who will report to Bhavneet Singh, MD and EVP/Emerging Markets, MTVNI, joins the new division from MTV Networks in NY, where he was Sr. Director/Emerging Technologies Ad Sales, and also led the launch of MTVN’s first domestic all-music HD channel, Palladia.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis:  Week to week, FOX remained the leader Wednesday night among A18-49 at 5.6/16, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Even with a programming switch, FOX dominated at 8p with Bones at 3.0/9 while ABC’s sitcoms Scrubs and Better Off Ted averaged a second place with 2.0/7. American Idol pivoted FOX into a gigantic lead at 9p with an 8.2/21 with ABC’s Lost coming next and delivering about half as much at 4.0/10. CBS retained its 10p #1 status with CSI: NY at 2.9/8 and ABC’s new series The Unusuals followed with 1.8/5 though NBC’s Law & Order rerun was nipping in third with 1.7/5.

Karen Horne takes on the newly created position of Director/Entertainment Diversity Initiatives with NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. Karen will manage primetime diversity programs for both NBC and Universal Media Studios with her main target being the Writers Diversity Program and the Directors Diversity Program. She will also spearhead the creative programming team in an effort to find new talent in these areas. Karen reports to Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios.

UK-based Chapman Entertainment recruited Natasha Dyson as Head/Licensing. Natasha who joined from 19 Entertainment will oversee and develop the UK Licensing Programme for the company’s brands, head international product development, strategic planning and execution among other duties. In addition, Emma Way was hired on a part-time basis as Legal Affairs Manager.
