CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
04/14/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, April 14, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Having been ousted from the Disney animated feature development slate, Miramax Films has inked a deal with Elton John’s Rocket Pictures to develop and produce the animated musical comedy feature film Gnomeo and Juliet. Set in the world of garden gnomes, Gnomeo and Juliet is a somewhat different take on Shakespeare’s classic love story. The movie will be animated in London with Baker Bloodworth serving as Producer. What is in a name? A Gnome by any other name…
Walden Media is set to adapt the kid’s novel The Water Horse, by author Dick King-Smith, for the big screen, per Variety. A co-production between Walden, Beacon Pictures and Revolution Studios, The Water Horse will be directed by Jay Russell and feature special effects produced by Weta Digital and Weta Workshop (King Kong; The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe). The Water Horse revolves around a lonely boy in Scotland who discovers an unusual egg that hatches a water horse, which is a sea monster right out of Scottish lore. Casting includes Alex Etel (Millions), as the boy, Emily Watson, and Ben Chaplin.
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and 821 Entertainment Group have entered into a partnership to produce and distribute a three-film documentary series for theatrical release, home DVD/video and digital distribution. Also included as part of the agreement are ancillary products including soundtracks, compilations and companion books. The first movie in the series is The Winding Stream, which follows the Original Carter Family, focusing specifically at the family’s music career and their ups, downs and commitment to family as well as their effect on pop culture. Additionally, the movie looks at the current-day Carters and Cashes who are keeping the trio’s work alive. Directed by documentary filmmaker Beth Harrington, The Winding Stream includes one of the last interviews with Johnny Cash. The second movie focuses on the history of border radio, which are radio stations set up just over the Mexican border, avoiding US regulations, and sending programming to the US and other countries around the world.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, the new 3D animated series for preschoolers will launch in primetime, Friday, May 5, 7:30p on Disney Channel. The series will fall into its regular timeslot the following morning, Saturday, May 6 at 9a, as part of the Playhouse Disney block. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse will also launch around the world on 22 Disney Channels and 5 Playhouse Disney channels. The new series features Mickey and his pals, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Daisy Duck and Donald Duck as they use early learning skills on their adventures and encouraging kids at home to do the same. The series is produced by Walt Disney Television Animation with a team of kid’s entertainment and child development experts.
Scholastic has acquired the publishing rights for a young adult edition of James L. Swanson’s bestselling book, Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer (William Morrow/HarperCollins). Manhunt pieces together the real story of the 12 day pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth, which Swanson has put together using archival material, obscure trial manuscripts and interviews with relatives of both the conspirators and those who hunted him down. Scholastic’s youth version of Manhunt is slated for publication in 2008, just ahead the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth 2009.
IDW Publishing will feature the Transformers characters in a special out-of-continuity story series titled Transformers: Evolutions. IDW will publish the first issue, Hearts of Steel, in June 2006 (32 pages). The five-part Transformers: Evolutions comic book follows the Transformers as they travel through various eras throughout history. The property is under license from the Hasbro Properties Group, the intellectual property development arm of Hasbro, Inc.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Paramount Pictures and Xbox have introduced Xbox Movie Showcase service aimed at the Xbox Live community. The cross-platform marketing effort features free, high-definition, downloadable content for Paramount’s upcoming movies Mission: Impossible III and Nick Movies’ Nacho Libre slated to be released nationwide on May 5 and June 16 respectively. The Xbox Movie Showcase content includes HD movie trailers, exclusive theme packs, and user customizable graphics.
Hyatt Resorts has inked an exclusive partnership with Cranium, Inc., the board game company, to provide Hyatt guests with access to a Cranium Game Library. The games and a special Family Game Hour will be available at Hyatt’s 18 resort properties in the continental US, Hawaii and the Caribbean. Additionally, upon checking to one of these resorts over the summer, families will be given a Cranium welcome gift throughout the summer months.
STONE SOUP
Channel One, the news/public affairs content provider for students (teens) in middle schools and high schools across the country, is packing its bags and moving to Washington DC from its home of 15 years in Los Angeles, CA. Channel One will maintain an LA office, which will house a satellite news bureau as well as its Internet operations and broadband television initiatives. The move will take place over the summer and Channel One will be up and running in time for the 2006-07 school year.
Adult Swim has partnered with the indie label Stones Throw Records to produce a new hip hop album (title TBA). The release will feature artists including Madlib and MF DOOM as Madvillain, collaborative work between Madlib and his late partner J.Dilla, and a slate of artists from the Stones Throw roster such as J. Rocc, Oh No, Percee P, Dudley Perkins, M.E.D., Koushik, Roc C, Aloe Blacc, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Madlib’s five piece jazz band Yesterdays New Quintet. This release follows up on Adult Swim’s first hip hop album Dangerdoom: The Mouse and the Mask (October 2005) produced in collaboration with Epitaph Records.
