Cynopsis: Kids!
4/13/07
Good morning. It’s Friday, April 13, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
TeenPeople.com will log-off for good at the end of this month, per a Mediaweek report. Seems like we’ve been here before? Pretty close, Time Inc. shut down publication of the print edition of Teen People following the September 2006 issue, but TeenPeople.com remained alive. Moving forward those visiting TeenPeople.com will be directed to the mother ship, People.com. Marc Golin, Editor/People.com, explained the meshing of the two websites made sense since stories about celebrities popular with teens on People.com, “get a nice amount of teen-demo traffic.” That said, according to the report, in March 2006, TeenPeople.com had 435,000 unique visitors, but fast forward to a year later and the teen site did not, “meet minimum sample size standards needed to reliably project audience size, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.” Launched in 1998 as both a print and online magazine, Teen People joins ElleGirl, the Hachette Filipacchi Media magazines that also shuttered its print operation to exist solely online.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Foothill Entertainment and Kaleidoscope Entertainment have inked a co-development deal with Phew!! Ltd. for Snapper, a CGI animated series. The environmentally themed series is set on an Amazon-like river and follows the adventures of Snapper, a mischievous young alligator, as he explores life on the river and in the jungle. Created by Phew founders Guy Hallifax, Ian Ellery and Mick Wells, Snapper will be animated by Malaysia-based Vision Animation. Plans for the property include expanding across multiple platforms.
Nelvana announced plans to produce My Friend Rabbit (26×30′), a new animated preschool TV series called. Based on author Eric Rohmann’s book of the same name My Friend Rabbit will be produced by Nelvana Studios and was picked up by Canadian preschool broadcaster Treehouse. The 2D animated series revolves around the exploits of two best friends, Mouse and Rabbit. The series will make its debut this fall 2007 in the US on qubo, the multi-platform TV network, followed in 2008 by its premiere on Treehouse. Both Nelvana and Treehouse are subsidiaries of Corus Entertainment.
Cartoon Network will be the US home for The Mr. Men Show (52×11′), a new sketch animated series From Chorion Ltd, which is slated to launch on the network in January 2008. Additionally, Cartoon Network is also co-producing the series with Chorion. The Mr. Men Show is based on the Mr. Men and Little Miss books created in the 1970s by Roger Hargreaves. The series is written and produced by Kate Boutilier and Eryk Casermiro and animated in the US by Renegade Animation.
CBeebies has commissioned two new preschool-targeted series from RDF Media Group. Both show will run as part of the channel’s afternoon programming block, Big Fun Time.
- Mister Make It (20×20′) this is an arts and crafts show hosted by an artist who will present different activities and encourage kids to use their imaginations. The series will feature a combination of live-action, CGI and other animation styles.
- Big Barn Farm (20×15′) follows the adventures of a group of animals that live together on a farm. The series is a mix of animation and live-animals, with the main characters, Gobo (baby goat), Petal (pig), Digger (puppy) and Dash (donkey), will be animated.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Digital Music Group, a digital distributor music and video content, has expanded its DMGI Kids video catalog with the acquisition of some classic kid’s series and animated movies, including the Bozo the Clown Show, The Howdy Doody Show, Batfink, Milton the Monster, and Gigantor. The deal also includes 100+ “lost episodes” of Howdy Doody, which were recorded in the 1970s and only recently found in storage.
American Greetings Properties will be at MIPTV with a range of programming content to international buyers, including its newest animated franchises Sushi Pack and Maryoku Yummy, two new properties Eva Fonteek and Super BadGuy, along with new animated content from its classic brands Care Bears and Holly Hobbie & Friends. DIC Entertainment continues act as international agent for AGP’s Strawberry Shortcake, handling the global entertainment and merchandising rights for the property, as well as representing AGP’s Sushi Pack.
Postman Pat is headed to Chinese TV for the first time as part of a newly completed broadcast deal between Entertainment Rights Distribution Ltd and China’s China Central Television. Under the deal CCTV picks up all 80×15′ episodes of the preschool targeted Postman Pat, which it will launch as part of its CCTV-kids programming block, making the series available to 96% of the country, reaching some 367 million kids. ER is developing a consumer products program for Postman Pat in China, which it plans to rollout there in from 2008.
Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) has signed a new VOD deal with VirginMega in France that allows consumers to access a range of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s movies online and on TV. Sony Pictures content will be available online at www.virginmega.fr as well as via the Alice IPTV platform using Alice’s Mes Videos a la Carte service, which requires a set top box. SPE movies that will be available include Monster House, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 among others.
