Good Morning.  It’s Friday, April 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from Cannes, France, at the MIP TV market! And if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

After airing only one episode Tuesday night, CBS cancelled the reality competition series Secret Talents of the Stars. The premiere/finale episode posted a 1.5/4 among A18-49. Starting next Tuesday, CBS will air 48 Hours Mystery in the 10p slot for two weeks then Shark returns with new episodes post-strike as of April 29.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Yesterday, many of the claims filed by Dan Rather in a $70 million lawsuit last September against the CBS Corporation were dismissed by Judge Ira Gammerman of the New York Supreme Court. The judge rejected Rather’s claim of fraud against CEO, Leslie Moonves, Viacom-CBS Chairman, Sumner Redstone and former CBS News president, Andrew Heyward in addition to his assertion that the network made him the scapegoat involving the bru-ha-ha surrounding the 60 Minutes II use of controversial papers in the story about President Bush’s National Guard service in the 1970s. The lawsuit further accused CBS of not giving him worthy assignments on CBS News programs following his resignation as anchor in March 2005.

Wednesday night’s finale of High School Reunion (10p) on TV Land delivered a 0.5 rating and 560,000 viewers among A25-54. The program also averaged more than a million total viewers.

This week, Great American Country (GAC) launched a new one-hour weekly series, Drafting Partners Wednesday night at 9p that matches up a NASCAR driver and a country music artist. Each learns about the other’s profession, family life and both show off their favorite country music videos. The series is produced by NASCAR Media Group.

UPFRONT UPDATE: Fuse TV

Yesterday, Fuse hosted an upfront party in New York City at Espace where the network unveiled a development slate of original programs:

  • With the Band – series following twelve fanatic groupies, bodyguards, roadies associated with rock, hip-hop and pop music worlds. Produced by Tijuana Entertainment.
  • The Smackdown Sessions – each episode watches as two emerging bands battle it out not with musical contests but with physical challenges. Rocket Science Laboratories produces.
  • Garage Band All Stars – a team of professionals from Hollywood, sports and other areas come together to form a band mentored by music industry producers, musicians and managers. From 3 Ball Productions, LLC. 
  • Sound Barrier – game show where two people who have like tastes in almost everything except music are pitted against another similar team to find out which pair can work together to win. From Authentic Entertainment.
  • Wild Side – series host explores the globe to find bizarre fringe music acts. Produced by Screaming Fleas.
  • Barely Vocal – competition series where a group of beautiful female singer wannabes live together and go through various challenges with one emerging in the end as a star. From Zig Zag Productions.
  • Rock Bottom – series examines real-life stories of musicians who are struggling with their addictions or other debilitating problems. Film Garden Entertainment produces.
  • Bling and a Prayer – hip-hop artists and Christian rock musicians live together and tour together cross-country and viewers find out what happens when member of two divergent music groups come together. From Swift River Productions.
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM MIP TV 2008

The market wound down yesterday with many of the buyers leaving by midday, jetting off to other destinations.  Cannes was considerably quieter by the Palais des Festivals and the Croissette – the main drag along the water with all the expensive designer stores.  A block up from the Croisette, along the Rue de Antibes and at the intersection with a small side street, was a celebration of an entirely different kind.  We came upon a crowd – mostly older people – around five in the evening and in the center was a six piece band dressed in black shirts and slacks, white ties and white fedora hats, playing the most wonderful dixieland music.  There was also a red, white and blue ribbon tied across the street.  A charming and clearly popular older man showed up, greeting those standing around the ribbon.  He then took a pair of scissors waiting for him a red velvet pillow, and said “un, deux, trois, Voila!” and cut the ribbon.  Everyone clapped, the band played.  The man next cut the 15′ ribbon into small 2″ bits, which were then distributed among the crowd.  You’d think Brad Pitt cut apart his t-shirt and handed the pieces to crowd of groupies. These folks were genuinely thrilled to have their section of ribbon, and more than a couple encouraged us to get our piece too.  Not wanting to take a piece that someone else would cherish, we begged off.  All in all, a wonderful cap to our week in Cannes. 

Next week, the adventure continues as we fly to Italy for the Venice Festival of Media.  First time in Italy, and no, I don’t speak a word of Italian either.  I know, tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!

Donal Logue was added to the HBO biker gang pilot, 1% playing a character called Misfit along with Timm Sharp, Lucy Punch and Sonny Barger. Donal was also just added to the cast of NBC’s Life for its second season next fall.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The plot thickened once again between Yahoo and Microsoft as Time Warner and News Corp. crept back into the picture, according to reports. Talks are underway to have Time Warner take a 20% stake in a combined Yahoo/AOL, giving the company the cash to buy back some of its shares from investors. Meanwhile, News Corp. is talking to Microsoft about making a joint bid for Yahoo, putting forth the prospect of a combined Yahoo/MSN/MySpace juggernaut. Yahoo’s directors are scheduled to meet this morning to mull their options. Analysts seem to think this all much ado about nothing and that the company will end up accepting Microsoft’s original offer, according to The Wall Street Journal.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY
:   Turner International expands into India, where it will begin produce animated feature films.  Additionally, Turner International has teamed with sister company Warner Bros. to form the Hollywood TV channel.  Turner, which is setting up its own animation studio in India, plans to produce two animated movie per year, beginning in 2009.  Meanwhile discussions are underway for carriage deals for the new Hollywood TV channel, which Turner aims to launch by years end.  Turner has a range of channels already available in India including kid-centric channels, Cartoon Network and Indian-kids channel Pogo.  Full edition and MIP TV Kids-related news: CYN KIDS.

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX maintained the same top ratings as the previous week Wednesday night at 6.8/18 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX dominated with its American Idol special the first two hours: at 8p delivering a 6.5/18 and a 7.0/17 during 9p. CBS took the final win at 10p as CSI: NY posted a 3.2/8.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Creative services agency Blue Room hired Mark Mutschler as Executive Producer. Mark’s responsibilities include diversifying the company’s current client base and increasing business in the areas of broadcast, commercial, online and print. Mark will work closely with Chris Gargani, CEO/Executive Producer and Brian Aumueller, Creative Director.

Disney and ESPN Media Networks promoted two executives in its Affiliate Sales and Marketing unit. Matt Kenny is now VP/Field Sales, Western Division to supervise field sales operations in three territories that cover 28 states. Matt is based in Burbank and reports to Sean Breen, SVP/Field Sales. Eric Ratchman was upped to VP/Business Strategy and Development to manage distribution development strategies across all Disney and ESPN Media Network platforms. Eric is based in Cheshire, CT and reports to David D. Preschlack, EVP/Disney and ESPN Media Networks.

Clear Channel Katz Advantage (CCKA) added four marketing executives all to the position as Director to its expanded Marketing Advantage group: Margaret Hughes is based in New York; Cynthia van Nostrand joins in the Dallas office; and Erin Murphy and Mo Zmich were hired for the Chicago office. Furthermore, a new Marketing Advantage office has opened in Atlanta headed by Gregory Simonson.

Darren Campo advanced to SVP/Programming, Production and Development up from SVP/Programming, Strategy and Research at truTV. In his new position, Darren will now manage the production and development units which produce 30 original series per year.

Rich Roberge was appointed as GSM for KUNS/Seattle the Univision affiliate. Fisher Communications owns this station and KOMO-TV as a duopoly.

Allied Advertising, Public Relations announced a new executive management reorganization where former president of the company, Gerry Feldman was upgraded to Chairman while Clint Kendall and David McDonald were named as Co-Presidents.

Greg Bennett moves to CBS Television Distribution (CTD) and takes on the position of SVP/Branded Integration and Online based in New York. Greg is charged with finding opportunities to merge CTD’s content with advertisers’ goals through product integration and custom marketing and promotions initiatives. He is also charged with extending CTD’s syndicated programs to online and other platforms.
