CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  French lawmakers unexpectedly struck down a “three strikes” bill that would have enabled ISPs to cut off file sharers’ connections for up to one year upon their third piracy violation. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has championed the measure as a way to protect French culture and expression, had rounded up the necessary votes on previous drafts of the bill. But the final version was rejected 21-15, as most of the 577-member legislature decided to take the day off to avoid voting on the hot potato issue. Here in the U.S. the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives began hearings this week on a new initiative to fight copyright piracy abroad. Late this month the Office of the United States Trade Representative is scheduled release its “Special 301” report listing countries whose lack of intellectual property protection have the greatest adverse effects on United States industries.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

This day in History:  1916 – The first PGA Championship event was played in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y.  England’s Jim Barnes won.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:    Behind the bar on Cheers was a b&w photograph supposedly of relief pitcher Sam Malone.  In fact, it was not really a picture of Sam, but of a real Boston Red Sox player who pitched for the team for 1965-1971.  Who was he?   JIM LONBORG, who later became a Boston based Dentist.  Kudos to: Scott Osborne-Univision/NY; Bob Brewer-Opus 3 Artists/NY; Rich Ambrose-Time Warner Cable/Washington, D.C; Jerry Diaz-Jerry Diaz & Associates/Miami Beach; Tom Nankival-WKOW/Madison WI; Ron Salcedo-Zimmerman/Nashville; Gretchen Brady-KDAF/Dallas; Danny Green-SpotPlus/Dallas; George NeJame/LA; Robin Schmelling-BCMI/Rancho Mirage; Johnny Cheng-Comcast Spotlight/San Francisco; Richard Levine-AT&T Ops/LA; Robert Bittman-SCTV/Toronto

Today’s Trivia Question:  This ad campaign first appeared on Earth Day 1971, and went on to win two Clio Awards and was named one of the top 100 advertising campaigns of the 20th Century by Ad Age Magazine.  What ad was it?  (Email
