Nickelodeon celebrates the planet on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, with new green-themed episodes of its tween-aimed series iCarly and True Jackson, VP as well as green-themed episodes of preschool series The Wonder Pets!, Olivia, and Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Noggin will similarly offers green-themed episodes of Toot & Puddle, Yo Gabba Gabba! and Pinky Dinky Doo throughout the day. The day will also feature on-air spots of real kids and what they are doing to protect the environment. Earth Day culminates at 9p that evening as Nickelodeon, The N and Noggin (Noggin only at 9p ET) ask viewers to Power Down for one minute to show their commitment get environmentally conscious and active. Nick will also unveil The Big Green Help grants program ( www.bghevent.com/grant ) to support schools and local groups with sustainability projects, and offer the kids the chance to take part in 500 events on that day. Additionally, leading up to Earth Day, Nick News with Linda Ellerbee premieres A Kid Off the Grid, Sunday, April 19, 9p. The special takes a look at families living off the grid and what it like to be a kid living in an energy self-sufficient home.
This week publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and ScrollMotion, creators of the Iceberg Reader and ScrollMotion technology for smart phones, release Curious George’s Dictionary as an Apple iPhone application (US$9.99). Specifically designed for preschoolers – first graders, the app features color graphics and illustrations and audio, including read-along narration. The Curious George’s Dictionary app is available via the iTunes App Store in 80 countries.
BabyTV, a Fox International Channel, launches in India on Sun Direct, a DTH platform with 3+ million subscribers. The channel is available on the basic tier with other fox channels including Fox TV (FX) and FoxCrime. Targeted to infants and toddler and their folks, BabyTV is already available in the region via B Net in the Maldives and Dialog TV in Sri Lanka.
TV-Loonland completes a number of sales for its animated series Leon (52×3). Co-produced by Studio Hari, TV-Loonland and France 3, Leon is currently in production and slated for delivery by holiday 2009. New broadcast deals for the short-form series include: Disney Spain for its DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) channel; Free TV deals with Scandinavian broadcasters TV4 Sweden, DRTV Denmark, MTV3 Finland; Icelandic Broadcasting Corporation RUV alongside TV3 Catalunya and Novi Mediji for Croatia; Chellozone Media (formerly MINIMAX) takes the Pay TV rights across Central European territories including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and the former Yugoslavia; Global TV Indonesia (Asia); and taking home video rights go to ABC Australia;
Abandon Interactive Entertainment releases Freaky Creatures, a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) on PC, Mac and mobile. The MMOG, which is also a social networking site with places to hang out and personalize, trade items, as well as play mini-games, went into beta in summer 2008. Freaky Creatures allows players to build customizable creatures and battle them against friends. Players begin with collectable action figures and a flash drive that unlocks the online universe. Starter packs include two action figures, 50 parts, 20 powers, four objects that can be placed in to the creature’s lair and a one-gigabyte reusable flash drive/$19.99. Additionally, Abandon is donating a portion of the sales of the Freaky Creatures starter packs to the Starlight Children’s Foundation’s Great Escapes program that benefits local kid’s hospitals nationwide.

Hello Kitty is turning 35 this year and creator, Sanrio, Co. Ltd, has a full slate of plans to celebrate. The Hello Kitty 35the anniversary theme is Hello Kitty Colors, which include red for friendship, pink for cute, yellow for “heartful”, green for wish and lavender for sweet. The rainbow of colors will be reflected on the Hello Kitty bow. The Hello Kitty anniversary themed product, including hundreds of products across multiple categories, will be available around the world from September through the end of the year. To mark the event there is a special anniversary website hosted by Sanrio Japan, www.kitty35.com , with a US anniversary site set to launch in June 2009 featuring information on product launches, activities and events.
7-Eleven launches an X-Men Origins: Wolverine promotion this month, leading up to the May 1 release of the Fox movie based on the Marvel Comics‘ characters. Accompanying the superhero Slurpee cups featuring graphics of Wolverine, Sabretooth and Gambit is a new Slurpee flavor Mutant Berry. Described as Hawaiian Punch Berry Limeade Blast, the new flavor was created by Dr Pepper. The promotion features lenticular Slurpee cups and character straws (each straw comes with a removable figure and base) and a special Big Gulp cup. In the movie Blob, an X-Men, will be drinking a Slurpee (a huge one to be certain). Additionally, 7-Eleven has launched a BrainFreeze Laboratory at www.slurpee.com where consumers can upload pictures of themselves in a face-freezing simulation.
If your name is Sarah Connor or John Connor and you like Pizza Hut … well … Thursday, May 21 is your lucky day. As part of a Pizza Hut and Warner Bros. promotion to support the release of the new movie Terminator Salvation (not yet rated, but not likely for kids), also May 21, those named Sarah or John Connor will get a free pizza (medium with one topping). Oh – and for those think you might just walk in and say your name is Sarah or John Connor … think again … you’ll need a government issue ID to claim that pizza. The restaurant chain is also running a sweepstakes to go to the movie premiere and other prizes now through May 4, 2009 at www.pizzahut.com . The website will also feature exclusive footage from the film May 11-30, as well as movie trailers and downloadable wallpapers.

She will work with Diana Manson, EVP/Creative, and Kurt Mueller, SVP/Creative and will report to Mary Durkan, Managing Director/Content. An industry veteran, Rosenthal was most recently VP, Playhouse Disney.
