With the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in the rearview mirror, the TV industry is already looking forward to next year. Variety reported that the Television Academy is in advanced talks to bring the Emmy Awards telecast to Amazon Prime Video, which would mark the first time the ceremony would be off broadcast TV since 1949.
- The Emmy Awards previously alternated broadcasts among the four major U.S. networks: ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. The most recent eight-year “wheel deal” contract expired this year, leading many analysts and experts in the industry to speculate if it would renew a similar rotating contract, opt for a simulcast scenario, or go fully on streaming like the Oscars moving to YouTube and SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Awards shifting to Netflix.
- As part of the most recent contract, networks were reportedly paying around $8 million per year to the Academy, which is similar to the license fee under a previous deal. However, it’s unclear what a deal with Prime Video might look like or whether deal points are strictly in place.
New streaming service, anyone? Streaming discovery platform JustWatch Group announced the launch of its own streaming service in October, with both free ad-supported and paid ad-free membership tiers.
- JustWatchTV will feature content from Paramount, New Regency, Fremantle, Bleecker Street and Vortex Media at launch. According to executives, the programming will be non-exclusive, but they expect exclusive windows to be planned out eventually.
- Users will be able to access the new service and its offerings through the JustWatch app and site. It will be available in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.
True crime is still as popular a TV genre as ever, according to new research. At Seriesly Berlin on Tuesday, Rahul Patel, principal analyst for Ampere Analysis, said that while other TV commissions have decreased overall, true crime is the one genre that remains steady.
- The Ampere data found that true crime commissions peaked in 2022 at about 2,500 globally for half of the year, but have decreased to under 2,000 for the first half of the year in 2026. Despite the dip, however, true crime is still the most popular genre in European television.
- Patel noted that, between 2024 and 2026, subscription streaming services ordered 35% of all crime series and 20% of all sports series.
