The 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards will air at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from the Los Angeles Peacock Theater. Longtime “Law and Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay, who recently wrapped a Broadway run in “Every Brilliant Thing,” will host the event.
- Why Monday and not Sunday? Because NBC is airing the ceremony this year and wants to avoid a conflict with the network’s own “Sunday Night Football.”
- Of the shows nominated, “Widow’s Bay” and “The Pitt” are leading predictions for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Drama Series, respectively.
- Over at Variety, Executive Editor Michael Schneider argues that this year’s original slate of nominees should put to bed the idea that Hollywood only cares about adapting existing IP.
A settlement might be back on the table. Paramount and California Attorney General Rob Bonta may finally meet to discuss a deal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
- US Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixson told both parties on Friday that by this Tuesday, lawyers must meet to select dates for an “in-person settlement conference” to be held within “two consecutive days in the end of October.”
- Bonta’s office was last scheduled to discuss settling its antitrust lawsuit with Paramount in August, but canceled at the last minute, alleging that the studio leaked and misrepresented meeting details in bad faith.
- October also happens to be when Paramount must start paying a 25-cents-per-share, or $7-million-per-day, ticking fee to Warner Bros. Discovery for every quarter that their merger deal does not close.
- The Takeaway: It’s unlikely that the settlement talks will lead to anything substantial right away, as Bonta wants structural remedies applied to the Paramount-WBD acquisition deal and Paramount has so far only offered behavioral ones. But at the very least, meeting face to face will get both sides talking again.
Politician, now producer. Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is launching his own production company along with former chief of staff Katie Telford.
- Hope & Hard Work, a reference to one of Trudeau’s 2015 political slogans, was announced at the Toronto International Film Festival, which kicked off Sept. 10.
- The company also unveiled a slate of TV projects in development, including a series adaptation of Perry Chafe’s novel “Closer by Sea,” a mystery series called “Detective Aunty” and a political rom-com called “Power Moves.”
- The Takeaway: Trudeau is following in the footsteps of other political figures like Barack Obama and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, who also pivoted to content production.
Jimmy Kimmel with James Talarico
Death to “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”? ABC says nay.
- ICYMI: Last week, celebrity gossip outlet Page Six reported a rumor that ABC will not renew its contract with Jimmy Kimmel, which would mean the end of the late-night talk show when the current season wraps next year. The tabloid cites an anonymous source with familiarity of the matter. In response, ABC issued a strong denial of the rumor, calling the report inaccurate and speculative.
- According to Puck, Kimmel informed ABC last month of his interest in renewing his contract. The network’s lead executive told Kimmel’s agent that budget cuts would be required.
- The facts: In addition to possible budget cuts, ABC is also juggling political pressure from Washington. The network recently sued the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for demanding that it file for early license renewals after the FCC criticized Kimmel’s jokes about the Trump administration. The FCC maintains that its renewal demands are unrelated to ABC’s programming.
CBS filed a motion in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday to dismiss a harassment lawsuit filed by former “Matlock” writer John Lowe in June. The filing disputes the allegations made against showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and executive producers Nicki Renna and Jeffrey Leiber, who Lowe claims made “racially stereotyped comments” about him and other Black staffers.

AMC Global Media greenlit a TV adaptation of “Point Break” from Alcon Television Group, AMC Studios and StudioCanal. Set 30 years after the original film starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, the series focuses on a new crew of surfing bank robbers inspired by the Ex-Presidents. Dave Kalstein (“Butterfly”) and Christopher C. Rogers (“Halt and Catch Fire”) are co-showrunners and executive producers.
Netflix canceled the romantic drama “Ransom Canyon” after two seasons. The show, which starred Josh Duhamel (“Las Vegas”) and Minka Kelly (“Friday Night Lights”), premiered in April 2025 and received mixed reviews.

Maybe “The Gentlemen” needs a boost from Meghan Markle after all. Season 2 of the Netflix series was watched by 3 million UK viewers in the first seven days of streaming, down from the Season 1 average of 3.5 million in 2024. That’s according to data from Barb, the leading British TV audience measurement organization.
Prime Video’s “Reacher” topped Nielsen’s ratings charts for streaming TV the week of Aug. 10 with 1.5 billion viewing minutes following the Season 4 premiere. Meanwhile, “The Big Bang Theory,” the runner-up, garnered more than 1 billion viewing minutes for the fifth consecutive week, largely thanks to the spinoff series “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.”
