IN THE NEWS
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav met with Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish this week at Paramount’s NYC headquarters to discuss a possible merger, reports Axios. The discussion was preliminary, and no offer is on the table. CNBC’s Alex Sherman suggested news of the meeting could help ascertain Comcast’s interest in a possible merger of NBCUniversal and WBD, and a deal could be hampered by both companies’ debt. What says Rich Greenfield, Partner, TMT Analyst at LightShed Partners? Paramount “may get sold in the next, call it, two years,” said Greenfield on the LightShed podcast, “but the idea that it’s being sold anytime immediately soon? I think investors are just wrong.”
There will be something missing from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Peacock Holiday Exclusive matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers – commercials. The 40% reduced ad load for the NFL game was made possible by presenting sponsors Capital One, Hyundai and Walmart. “The power of live sports is more prevalent than ever, and at NBCUniversal, we not only have the scale of our broadcast platform, but we now can reach an entirely new audience through Peacock,” said Mark Marshall, Chairman, Global Advertising and Partnerships, NBCUniversal. “With this one-of-a-kind sponsorship environment attached to our first-ever exclusive Peacock NFL game, we are able to connect an untapped set of consumers to our marketers, and we couldn’t be more grateful to our partners at the NFL for trusting us to creatively launch this groundbreaking format.” Branded content will include “Football Night in America” studio updates and analysis from the sponsors, and a shoppable experience will drive viewers to Walmart’s Holiday Hub for last-minute Christmas presents.
The number of US households able to access the ATSC 3.0 broadcasting standard – aka NextGen TV – grew 22% in 2023, reports Pearl TV, a consortium of broadcast companies leading the initiative. New features and upgrades, including some addressing the issue of the delay in widespread adoption, will be showcased at CES next month. “As 2024 approaches, it’s all about the consumer and more—more interactive features, more accessory options at retail, more broadcaster applications enabled by the RUN3TV platform, and more new markets and second sticks,” said Anne Schelle, Managing Director of Pearl TV.
The 81st Annual Golden Globes has found a host: Stand-up comedian and actor Jo Koy (“Haunted Mansion”). “I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. I’m so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year,” said Koy. “This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita (Google it)!” The ceremony airs Sunday, January 7 at 8p. |
