   IN THE NEWS

Couch potatoes this Thanksgiving can do more than eat and watch football. NBCUniversal and Walmart announced new shoppable experiences and measurement capabilities for live sports coverage, kicking off Thanksgiving night. Viewers can shop directly on Walmart.com through an on-screen QR code and NBCUniversal’s new text-to-shop functionality in its Shop the Pod, without missing a touchdown. Advertisers will be provided with closed-loop measurement to attribute sales across linear and streaming media displayed during programming, through Walmart Connect and NBCUniversal’s data collaboration. Walmart will also feature a two-minute segment from its new advertisement campaign, “Deals of Desire,” showcasing the retailers’ biggest holiday deals.

CBS pulled no punches in its response to Sony’s breach of contract lawsuit over “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune.” “CBS is disappointed by Sony’s decision to turn its back on the Parties’ longstanding relationship, to attempt to renounce the decades’ worth of efforts that CBS has invested into distributing and arranging for the distribution of the Series, and to attempt and escape the bargain it willingly made,” said the cross-complaint filed in LA Superior Court. “Therefore, through these claims, CBS seeks to hold Sony to the Agreements, and CBS remains committed to continuing to occupy its mantle as Sony’s trusted partner and distributor of the Series for the next four decades and beyond.” Last month, Sony filed a lawsuit accusing CBS of self-dealing and failing to maximize revenues in its syndication of the game shows.

As part of Allen Media Group’s cost-cutting measures, the company is shutting down The Weather Channel en Espanol. The move follows a round of layoffs in October, and the transition of FAST channel Pattrn to social media.

NBC, which has aired the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade since 1953, is looking to strike a deal with Macy’s to keep the event on the network and Peacock, reports The Wall Street Journal. The annual price tag would be $60 million, versus the current contract’s $20 million. The cost of production will be about $7 million for this year’s spectacle; last year the parade drew $52 million in advertising.

Disney is set to hand over $43.25 million to settle the pay equity class action suit filed in 2019. “We have always been committed to paying our employees fairly and have demonstrated that commitment throughout this case, and we are pleased to have resolved this matter,” said a Disney spokesperson. The company will also enlist an external expert to ensure compensation equity. A hearing on January 10 will seal the deal.

Netflix has ordered a limited series adaptation of Harlen Coben novel I Will Find You. Robert Hull (“Quantum Leap”) will adapt and serve as showrunner. It’s the streamer’s third Coben project, after “Fool Me Once” and “Missing You,” premiering January 1.

Romantasy author Jennifer L. Armentrout (Blood and Ashes) has inked a deal with Panopticon Media to develop “The Key,” a reality series set in the world of fantasy storytelling. The format has 15 contestants living in a village competing in immersive challenges. “To create a show like ‘The Key’ in which real people live out their own adventures in the Romantasy world that I love is very exciting,” said Armentrout. “I am looking forward to taking this next step into storytelling that blurs the lines between fiction and reality.”
