So here’s the deal: The SAG-AFTRA National Board approved the tentative agreement reached with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on November 8. Next, the deal goes to the union’s membership for ratification. “We have forged the biggest deal in industry history which broke pattern, established new revenue streams and passed a historic $1 billion plus dollar deal with the most progressive AI protections ever written. I feel pretty confident in saying this is a paradigm shift of seismic proportions,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “Onward and upwards!”
The deal provides protections around the use of AI, two wage increases in the first year of the contract – 7% upon ratification, and another 4% increase effective July 2024. There will be another 3.5% increase effective July 2025, a new compensation stream for performers working in streaming, and more protections for sexual harassment preventions, as well as new casting guidelines, retirement contributions, and relocation allowances. Voting to approve the contract begins on Tuesday and will end in the first week of September.
What say you, AMPTP? “We are pleased that the National Board has recommended the agreement for ratification by the membership,” stated an AMPTP spokesperson. “We are also grateful that the entire industry has enthusiastically returned to work.”
