A partnership with Netflix helped AMC Networks beat analysts’ estimates for 3Q24. Content licensing revenues increased 31% to $81 million due in part to a deal with Netflix that brings prior seasons of 13 series to the streamer. AMC+ rose to 11.8 million subscribers from 11.6 million last quarter. Total company net revenues fell 6% from the year prior, to $600 million. AMC Networks also paid $42 million for the 50.1% of BBC America it didn’t already own.
Paramount+ added 3.5 million subscribers in 3Q24, to hit 72 million. Direct-to-consumer revenue rose 10% to $1.86 billion and adjusted earnings went from a $238 million loss in the third quarter of 2023 to a $49 million profit. Revenue of Paramount Global’s television segment dipped 6% year-over-year, to $4.3 billion.
Is Paramount still looking for a strategic partner for Paramount+? “We feel good about our position and our ability to remain a standalone,” said Paramount Co-CEO Chris McCarthy on an earnings call. That said, “You can absolutely count on us being opportunistic,” McCarthy added. “We’re looking at partnerships from a strategic lens to drive more value and you can be sure that in deciding that we’ll take key factors into consideration.” |
HBO put to rest chatter that season three of “Euphoria” has been delayed or canceled. Word that Zendaya has joined the cast of Christopher Nolan’s next movie sparked the rumors, prompting HBO to put out the statement, “’Euphoria’ is going into production in 2025. Nothing has changed.”
TCM advised viewers to fasten their seatbelts, it might be a bumpy ride in the coming weeks, as the Warner Bros. Discovery classic movies channel goes through some upgrades. Said host Ben Mankiewicz in a video statement on Friday, “The best fans and the best movies deserve the best service. So to ensure TCM’s on-air experience is reliable and smooth for the foreseeable future, we are upgrading our broadcasting operations. You might notice some interruptions while we go through this process, so please, bear with us.” |

INSIGHT |
GroupM takes an active role in the career journeys of its staffers. Serena Anthony, Chief People Officer at GroupM, explains how the company nurtures employees, and reveals what motivates her to inspire change.
What kinds of programs are underway at GroupM to empower employees to do their best work?
We look at the employee experience holistically and believe employees do their best work when they’re happy, healthy, respected, included, and supported in their learning journey. There’s no one magic bullet for empowering employees.
Our GroupM University and Launch Pad programs have been very successful in helping our people succeed now and prepare for the next step in their careers. We offer programs that support career pivots, leadership development, and lots more. WPP Open and our internal AI training are also available to all employees, helping them harness and make the most of AI tools that we feel will continue to shape the future of our industry and the contours of people’s job responsibilities.
That said, training is only one part of the whole. Through supportive health & wellness benefits, inclusive practices, meaningful performance reviews, and events & programs that inspire, celebrate, and educate our employees, we provide a full set of tools for our people to show up at their best.
What is the most important piece of advice you have for managers to achieve a productive work environment?
Something simple: being present. I think actively engaging helps us be more productive and also helps us better identify when we’re distracted or drifting into behaviors that don’t serve us.
It’s easy to passively default or drift into unproductive patterns, even when we intuitively understand those things are bad for our output and happiness. When I stay present, I can assess whether things are valuable, where there’s room for improvement, and where I can better support myself and others. I listen better, I learn more deeply, and I think I have a better experience overall.
How has being a mother impacted your work?
Motherhood shapes my work in visible and invisible ways. My daughters are an enormous part of my life, and I work hard not just for GroupM, but to create a better future for when they enter the workforce. I’d like to think my drive to do right by them makes me tenacious, but patient. My daughters also give me perspective. They’re the best critics and cheerleaders I could ask for. I love being a mother and seeing other mothers have successful careers, but there’s more work to be done around normalizing motherhood and caregiving instead of treating it like a sensitivity or liability.
The explicit or implied priorities around women having and raising children can sometimes mean decisions are made for me based on assumptions. It was worse when I was just starting out; women of a certain life stage were expected to care more about starting a family. A lot has changed since then, but there are still moments that are frustrating or hurtful. Having kids does change the calculus around many of my decisions, but not all. Discrimination is called out more explicitly now, but it still exists in intrusive thoughts, insensitive private conversations, and presumptive ways of thinking.
While there’s still work to be done, I’m grateful for how much things have changed, and I have deep respect for those who paved the way to where we are today. I look forward to seeing how much more we can accomplish, and it’s an enormous privilege to use my role at GroupM to inspire awareness, influence change, and create a better future for everyone. |
