IN THE NEWS

The actors’ union and studios have come to terms on a tentative deal for a new three-year contract. After days of talks following the AMPTP’s “last, best and final” offer late last week, with AI protections the main sticking point, SAG-AFTRA and studios agreed to an end to the strike that began on July 14.

The first two episodes of Paramount+’s “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” will air back-to-back on CBS on Sunday, November 12 at 9p. The anthology series, executive produced by Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone), started its streaming run on November 5.

WE tv has acquired non-exclusive cable rights to all seven seasons of Sony Pictures Television/CBS Studios action drama “S.W.A.T.” The CBS series is available on Netflix and Hulu, and has been sold in broadcast syndication. Its WE tv debut is November 12.

By the numbers: Disney earnings topped analysts’ expectations, with 7 million new subscribers, for a total of 150.2 million. Revenue was $21.24 billion, up 5% from the year-ago period….Warner Bros. Discovery reported 3Q23 total revenues of $9.98 billion, up 1% versus the prior year quarter. Net loss was $417 million, and included $1.8 billion in restructuring and other expenses. Streaming revenue was up 5% to $2.5 billion, thanks to price hikes.…Total revenue at Nexstar Media Group dipped 11% versus 3Q23, to $1.1 billion, while core TV ad revenue fell 25, to $391 million…. Gray Television also saw total revenue drop for the quarter, down 12% to $803 million. Core advertising revenue rose 1% year-over-year.

Kelly Saberi has joined FOX Business Network as a Chicago-based correspondent. She will begin her new role later this month, replacing Grady Trimble, who now serves as a Washington based correspondent for the network.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

A Spanish- and English-language crime drama, “Prey Before You Eat” (w/t) is in the works from Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Rubicon Global Media’s Jorge Granier and Chris Albrecht, reports Deadline. “I am excited to join forces again with Chris, we have had great success together with the ‘Power’ Universe. I look forward to bringing more premium content to underserved audiences and doing it with my friend Chris makes it that much better,” said Jackson of the project.

“Avalon TV” has been renewed for season two by World of Wonder. The freshman season of the WOW Presents Plus original series wraps Monday, November 13.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Comedy series “Bookie” premieres Thursday, November 30 on Max. The eight-parter from creator Chuck Lorre stars Sebastian Maniscalco as an LA bookie facing the potential legalization of sports gambling in California. Charlie Sheen, former star of Lorre’s “Two and a Half Men,” plays one of the bookie’s clients.

“Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God” premieres Monday, November 13 at 9p on HBO. The docuseries chronicles the life of Amy Carlson, a self-proclaimed spiritual savior whose followers believed her physical demise would lead to her evacuation by UFO and salvation for humanity.

PBS’ “American Experience” kicks off season 36 in January, with documentaries including “Fly With Me,” focused on early flight attendants, and “The Life Savers,” honoring the team that pioneered the Pap test, among others.

“Incredible Animal Journeys,” narrated by Jeremy Renner, premieres Sunday, November 19 at 9p on National Geographic. The seven-part docuseries follows the likes of humpback whales, zebras and polar bears.

COMING UP

FOX News Media will present its fourth annual “All-American Christmas Tree Lighting” on Monday, November 20 at 5p, partnering with the First Responders Children’s Foundation. The lighting will take place on FOX Square outside the network’s NYC headquarters and air live on FOX News during the last half hour of “The Five.”

The Unforgettable Gala, honoring Asian and Pacific Islanders in entertainment, arts and culture, will be available on cable and streaming platforms for the first time. ChimeTV will serve as the exclusive broadcast partner for UNFO. Honorary co-chairs, journalist Lisa Ling and filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton will lead this year’s awards Selection Committee. The gala will take place December 16 at the Beverly Hilton and will air on ChimeTV at a later date.

STREAMING

SiriusXM revealed its refreshed brand platform and identity, including a new logo, master color palette, and mascot. The updated brand accompanies the unveiling of the Company’s next generation Streaming app, new pricing, original programming, and more. “We’re thrilled to introduce the world to the new SiriusXM brand, which brings to life the best of what we have to offer and welcomes in a new generation of listeners while staying true to our roots,” said Suzi Watford, SVP, Chief Growth Officer at SiriusXM. “Our new brand platform, Closer, showcases the unique nature of our offering, giving true fans a space to go deeper into what they love.”

Almost Friday Media has teamed up with acTVe and OTT Studio to launch the Almost Friday channel, currently available as a free, ad-supported FAST Channel on Amazon Freevee. “It’s clear that Almost Friday and Friday Beers have tackled ‘guy culture’ in a way that connects with the dudes of 2023 like no other brand can do today,” said acTVe CEO Geoff Clark. “Their goofy, self-deprecating over antagonistic, and vulnerable instead of macho sensibility is what audiences want today, and as the head of a company devoted to bringing great content to audiences, for free, I’m especially excited about launching the Almost Friday channel.”

Megaphone TV announced a shift in its focus towards real-time interactive sponsorship for broadcasters. While continuing to provide news polls and trivia features, Megaphone TV is now positioned as a sponsorship and advertising-first product. Broadcasters can create interactive sponsored content for live shows, enabling immediate results with digital mobile offers.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Major US sports teams secured a record-breaking $6.7 billion in sponsorship sales, marking a 17.5% year-over-year increase across MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLS, according to SponsorUnited’s 2023 Year in Review, Sports & Entertainment Marketing Partnerships Report. MLB led the way with a 23% increase, and the NHL was not far behind at 21%. Other findings include:
· NIL Continues to be Lucrative: 550 brands—including Shake Shack, Hey Dude, and Universal Pictures—ventured into NIL partnerships for the first time.
· Coca-Cola Dominates the Sports Sponsorship Space: Coca-Cola had 938 brand deals, almost double the next closest top brand, its main competitor Pepsi (499).
· AI Brands Break Ground in Sports Sponsorships: Over 100 companies jumped into the sponsorship space this year. The NHL led with 45% of AI sponsorships across US major pro sports.
“The explosion of the AI industry this year has shown limitless potential for sponsorships going forward, as brands can connect with fans in many new and different ways,” said SponsorUnited CEO Bob Lynch. “The sports and entertainment space is ripe for AI partnerships to skyrocket, and I believe they will.”

The “WBNA Friday Night Spotlight on ION” increased this season’s total WBNA audience by 24%, to 30 million unique viewers, said Scripps Sports. Over 15 weeks, 23 games reached a total of 12.3 million viewers.

GOING GLOBAL

Boat Rocker has secured global sales for its culinary shows “Mary Makes It Easy” and “Cross Country Cake Off,” both created and produced by its Proper Television division in association with Bell Media. “Mary” has been picked up by Food Network US, SBS Australia, ViuTv Hong Kong and Disney’s 24 Kitchen for the Benelux, and SevenOne in Germany. “Cake Off” is headed to Foxtel Australia, HK Television in Hong Kong, 24 Kitchen in Benelux, V Paprika in Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Moldova and on Spektrum TV in Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Sixteen South alongside co-production partner Mikros announced new sales for their animated series, “Coop Troop,” following its recent UK debut on ITVX. The show has been acquired by ABC Australia, RTE Ireland, SVT Sweden, YLE Finland and Radio-Canada.

Fox Sports’ “America’s Game of the Week,” featuring the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, was the most-watched NFL telecast of the season with 27.14 million viewers, according to Nielsen. That’s up 34% over the comparable game last year.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

NBCUniversal has named Alison Levin as President of Advertising and Partnerships, and upped Karen Kovacs to President of Client Partnerships. Levin was previously VP of Global Ad Revenue and Marketing Solutions at Roku, and Kovacs was elevated from her role as EVP, Client Partnerships.
