James Gorman will succeed Mark Parker as Disney’s Chairman of the Board on January 2. Gorman, who will be stepping down as Executive Chairman at Morgan Stanley on December 31, is leading Disney’s committee to identify a successor to CEO Bob Iger. “James Gorman is an esteemed leader who has become an invaluable voice on the Disney Board since joining earlier this year, and I am extremely pleased that he has agreed to assume the role of Chairman upon my departure. Drawing on his vast experience, James is expertly guiding the extensive search process for a new CEO, which remains a top priority for the Board,” said Parker in a statement. “As I prepare to leave the Board to focus on other areas of my work, I am proud of Disney’s renewed position of strength and excited for the company’s future, and I want to thank my fellow directors, Bob Iger and his exemplary management team for their continued strong leadership and dedication.”

In the 2024 election cycle through the end of August, advertisers who spent at least $5,000 on Google and Meta bought $619 million in political ads, with at least $248 million focused on the presidential race, according to a new report from the Wesleyan Media Project, the Brennan Center and OpenSecrets. Additional findings include:
· Of spenders on Meta and Google known to advertise in support of a party, spending in favor of Democrats was more than three times the amount of spending for Republicans. (Some Republican-aligned spending may have migrated to other platforms not included in this analysis, in part due to lack of public data.)
· Among presidential candidates, $182 million was spent for Kamala Harris and $45 million for Donald Trump.
· Almost half the total, $281 million, came from spenders that may hide some or all of their donors.

Despite its ban on political ads, TikTok approved ads that contained election disinformation submitted by watchdog group Global Witness. While the nonprofit found that social media companies have in general improved their content moderation systems since its investigation two years ago, TikTok approved four of eight ads submitted that contained election falsehoods. Global Witness pulled them before they were posted. “Four ads were incorrectly approved during the first stage of moderation, but did not run on our platform,” said a TikTok spokesperson. “We do not allow political advertising and will continue to enforce this policy on an ongoing basis.

Chick-fil-A is launching entertainment app Chick-fil-A Play on November 18, with original animated shows including “Chick-fil-A Cows.” “Hospitality and fun have always been at the core of the Chick-fil-A family experience, whether inside our Restaurants and play areas, or through our Kids Meals,” said Dustin Britt, Executive Director of Brand Strategy. “The Chick-fil-A Play App is a digital extension of that experience and another way we’re reimagining play for our guests, in a unique way through entertainment that really encourages time together.”

Alcon Entertainment, producer of “Blade Runner 2049,” is suing Elon Musk and Warner Bros. Entertainment for copyright infringement. Alcon alleges denying use of footage from the 2017 film for Musk’s October 10 Cybercab presentation on the WBD lot, only to learn that what appeared to be an AI-generated image with similar visuals was used instead. “This was clearly all a bad faith and intentionally malicious gambit by Defendants to make the otherwise stilted and stiff content of the joint WBDI-Tesla event [ed. note: ouch!] more attractive to the global audience and to misappropriate ‘BR2049’s’ brand to help sell Teslas,” reads the complaint, which contends association with hardcore Donald Trump supporter Musk “muddies the waters” for Prime Video’s upcoming series, “Blade Runner 2099.” “If, as here, a company or its principals do not actually agree with Musk’s extreme political and social views, then a potential brand affiliation with Tesla is even more fraught,” says the complaint.

Kartoon Studios, the controlling partner of Stan Lee Universe, plans to develop Stan Lee’s super hero ensemble The Excelsiors with producer Michael Uslan (“Batman). The project will launch as a graphic novel through Legible Comics, with concurrent development for television and film adaptations. “Stan was incredibly proud of The Excelsiors, and he was proud to have his eponymous ‘namesake’ signature, developed by his friend and collaborator, Michael Uslan,” said Andy Heyward, Kartoon Studios CEO. “Stan took all his storytelling and character development skills, which he developed over the years at Marvel Comics, and incorporated them into The Excelsiors.”

ABC is developing a comedy from Rachel Bloom (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) and her husband, Dan Gregor. “Do You Want Kids?” will be produced by 20th Television, and executive produced by Steve Levitan (“Modern Family”).

Netflix has ordered “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsay,” from Radica Media and director Joe Berlinger. The true crime story about the 1996 murder of the six-year-old beauty queen launches Monday, November 25.

Chris Dinan is the new executive producer of ABC’s “World News Tonight,” succeeding Almin Karamehmedovic, who became President of ABC News in August. Dinan has been a senior broadcast producer of the show since 2014.

Beta Film and Latin America’s Globo are teaming for the development of crime drama “Discipline” (w/t), marking the beginning of a multi-year partnership. The eight-hour series is created by Konrad Dantas, founder of KondZilla, and by showrunner and creative producer Felipe Braga. Braga’s LB Entertainment and KondZilla will produce for Globo, Beta Film and newly established production boutique Janeiro Studios.

Mexican celebrity influencer, reality star, host, and actor Clovis Nienow has joined Telemundo’s morning show “Hoy Día,” as co-host. Nienow will lead entertainment segments and engage in discussions on trending topics.

Spain-originated content has generated an estimated $5.1 billion in global streaming revenue over the past four years, according to a MIPCOM presentation from Parrot Analytics and ICEX Spain Trade & Investment. According to Parrot Analytics’ year-over-year growth data from 2023 to 2024, the global demand for Spain-originated content has seen growth across all regions:

Parrot Analytics’ data also shows a 22% increase in the availability of Spanish series and films on major global streaming platforms since 2021.

Keshet International has teamed with C5 as the UK broadcaster of a premium docuseries it has been co-developing with SandStone Global. The three-part classical history series is based on Professor Bettany Hughes’ book, Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Onboard the cast of Netflix limited series “East of Eden,” a take on John Steinbeck’s classic novel, are Tracy Letts (“Saturday Night”), Martha Plimpton (“The Regine”), Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones”), Joe Anders (“Bonus Track”) and Joseph Zada (“Invisible Boys”). Production on the seven-parter starring and exec produced by Florence Pugh (“Oppenheimer”) and written and exec produced by Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 film, is underway.

Michael Emerson (“Lost”) has joined the second season of CBS’ “Elsbeth” – starring is wife, Carrie Preston – in a recurring role, beginning with an episode airing Thursday, December 12.

The NBA and Sport 24, the live sports channel for the international airline and cruise line industries, struck a multiyear extension of their existing agreement that will see Sport 24 broadcast more than 125 live NBA games each season to passengers on select airline carriers and cruise lines.

BossaNova has closed a string of sales for “Tsunami: The Day The Wave Hit,” which will see the premium documentary air across Europe and North America.

Banijay Asia and Disney+ Hotstar announced the Indian adaptation of NBCUniversal detective series “Monk.” The series is already in production.

All3Media International has announced deals in Europe, Australia and Asia for Lion TV’s premium documentary “Irresistible: Why We Can’t Stop Eating.” Ahead of its BBC premiere, the show has sold in Europe across SVT (Sweden), Movistar+ (Spain) and TV2 (Denmark). The doc has also licensed by BBC Studios in a pan territory deal in Africa, Now TV Hong Kong and SBS in Australia.

Sphere Abacus has signed a deal with BritBox for the US and Canada for a package of non-fiction, true crime, entertainment and drama titles.

Blue Ant Studios greenlit a second season of Nippon TV format “Old Enough!”, co-produced with TVO for Canada.

The season four premiere of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” scored 6.19 million total viewers and a 2.17 rating among A18-49 in Live+7 numbers. The workplace comedy rose over its initial Live + Same Day audience by 191% in Total Viewers and +486% in the demo.

Sunday’s episode of HBO’s “The Penguin” averaged a same-day1.8 million cross-platform viewers, up from 1.7 million for the week before. The dark drama’s first episode has racked up over 14 million viewers.
