DirecTV announced plans to launch FAST platform “MyFree DIRECTV” later this year. The service will be accessible across online, mobile, and smart TVs and streaming devices. At launch, the free service will provide viewers with access to curated content and an on-demand library, with additional channels slated to join the platform throughout 2025. “DIRECTV envisions a brighter TV future that offers consumers quality content with more choice and more control at the right value. The launch of MyFree DIRECTV will do just that,” said Amy Leifer, Chief Advertising Sales Officer at DIRECTV Advertising. “We’re laser-focused on strengthening our investment in this area as we empower our advertising clients to reach new audiences with targeted and contextual solutions and innovative ad formats.” |
Bundle up: STARZ and BritBox launched a complementary bundle allowing new customers to access both platforms with a single $14.99/month subscription. The standalone offering is a first-of-its-kind for STARZ. “Partnerships have always been key for us as a complementary premium service, and we are excited to now offer bundles through our own retail platform,” said Alison Hoffman, President, STARZ Networks. “We believe this expanded offering adds value for adult audiences seeking prestige, high-quality premium programming and provides an incredibly seamless and low-friction consumer experience.”

Later this month, Apple TV+ will be available via Prime Video in the US as an add-on subscription for $9.99 per month. Prime members will be able to subscribe to Apple TV+ with no extra apps to download, and no cable required. The subscription can be canceled at any time.
Kamala Harris accepted CNN’s invitation for a town hall on October 23, after a CNN presidential debate with Donald Trump was nixed by the Republican presidential candidate. Trump was also invited to do a town hall on CNN, but had yet to RSVP at press time.
Speaking of, Trump took issue with the interview Harris did with CBS’ “60 Minutes” that aired Monday, claiming the newsmagazine edited Harris’ responses to make her appear “more presidential.” On Thursday, Trump wrote on Truth Social, “’60 Minutes’ is a major part of the News Organization of CBS, which has just created the Greatest Fraud in Broadcast History. CBS should lose its license, and it should be bid out to the Highest Bidder, as should all other Broadcast Licenses, because they are just as corrupt as CBS — and maybe even WORSE!”. The charge didn’t sit well with FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, who stated, “While repeated attacks against broadcast stations by the former President may now be familiar, these threats against free speech are serious and should not be ignored. As I’ve said before, the First Amendment is a cornerstone of our democracy. The FCC does not and will not revoke licenses for broadcast stations simply because a political candidate disagrees with or dislikes content or coverage.” Trump had also been invited to appear in the traditional pre-election “60 Minutes” special, but declined. |
Netflix has renewed Erin Foster’s chart-topping “Nobody Wants This” for a second season. Jenni Konner and Eric Kaplan (“Girls”) have joined as executive producers and showrunners for the romantic comedy starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. Erin Foster will remain as an EP alongside President of Jenni Konner Productions Nora Silver, Bell and Steve Levitan.
Also scoring a new season on Netflix is “The Diplomat,” which will return for a third run. Season two of the drama starring Keri Russell drops October 31.

Spending on the Presidential election has reached $2.1 billion since Super Tuesday, according to a new report from AdImpact. Democrats have spent $1.5 billion, with $1.1 billion coming since Harris became the nominee in late July, while Republicans have spent $768 million. Additional findings include:
· Since Harris joined the race, Arizona, Wisconsin, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada and Pennsylvania have received 79% of total aired spending, and are set to receive 88% of future ad reservations.
· Since Biden dropped out of the race, Democrats have outspent Republicans in aired ads by $322 million. As of October 7, Democrats lead Republicans in future reservations: $266 million to $178 million.
· Pennsylvania makes up 21% of all aired presidential spending since July 22.
Fifty-eight million dollars in estimated 2Q24 open programmatic ad spend went to CTV apps flagged as MFA, according to Pixalate’s Made-for-Advertising Connected TV Benchmark Report, decreasing from 1.5% in March to 1% in June 2024. The study found that 99% of CTV MFA ad spend goes to apps with private or blank domains, and 1% goes to MFA CTV apps registered in the US. Thirty-seven percent of estimated likely CTV MFA open programmatic ad spend is allocated to the “Movies & TV” category, followed by “Games” at 26%.

You know those ads you’re fed on social media? You’re not the only one clicking. Among monthly social media users, 56% report encountering products or services that catch their interest, according to Adtaxi’s 2024 Social & Commerce Survey. The rate jumps to 88% when considered over a week and reaches 94% over an extended period. More key findings include:
· 48% of all monthly social media users actively search for products or services. Over a week, this activity significantly increases to 76%, and over a month, reaches 85%.
· In the past month, 68% of adults (over 70% of social media users) made a purchase directly through a social media platform.
· More Americans are turning to Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube when shopping for big-ticket items like new vehicles. In the past year, there has been an increase in purchasers willing to buy a car online, from 49% in 2023 to 57% in 2024.
“The findings of our 2024 Social & Commerce Survey are important for digital marketers to examine as they develop strategies for their client’s social media campaigns,” said Chris Loretto, EVP of Adtaxi. “It is clear that social media has a tight hold on the consumers’ attention on a day-to-day basis. In order to reach target audiences where they are, marketers must utilize these platforms in an organic and genuine way.”
The advertising industry’s anti-fraud initiatives resulted in $10.8 billion in savings in the US in 2023, a 92% reduction compared to the likely losses due to Invalid Traffic (IVT) without those standards and programs in place. That’s according to the 2024 US Ad Fraud Savings Report, covering the cross-industry efforts to reduce ad fraud in the digital advertising ecosystem, conducted by TAG in partnership with the 4A’s, ANA and IAB. More findings include:
· Without the ad industry anti-fraud programs currently in place, the IVT rate for all display and video advertising in the US would likely be approximately 9.96%, translating to potential losses of approximately $11.78 billion in 2023.
· The industry’s losses due to IVT were reduced by 92% to $979 million.
· The vast majority of US digital ad revenue for video and display advertising in 2023 flowed through companies that had earned TAG’s Certified Against Fraud Seal, which recognizes compliance with multiple industry anti-fraud standards. The ten largest digital platforms, which control most US digital ad revenue, were key contributors to this reduction in fraud.
“Since the inception of digital advertising, eliminating ad fraud has been a top priority. We have made a lot of collective progress, and this study quantifies the progress accomplished through industry standards and collaboration,” said David Cohen, IAB CEO. “The tools and frameworks developed by IAB Tech Lab and codified as part of TAG’s certification programs are the foundation of our industry’s anti-fraud success, and these results show that our collective efforts are paying off.”

“SNL” alum John Mulaney will host a live variety talk show for Netflix, revealed Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria at the Bloomberg Screen Time conference. “I’m excited about pushing into another area,” said Bajaria. Mulaney hosted six-episode “Everybody’s in LA,” part of the Netflix Is a Joke festival.
AYR Media podcast “My Mother’s Murder,” following host Lauren Malloy’s journey to discover the truth behind her mother’s death, is being adapted as an MGM Television series starring Chloë Grace Moretz. Moretz will executive produce alongside AYR Media’s Aliza Rosen Moretz, Steve Stark and Stacey Levin for Toluca Pictures, and Jackie Levine for Audible. Malloy will serve as a producer.
LA-based film and TV studio Happy Accidents has partnered with New Zealand-based production company Kevin & Co on new original comedy “The Sanctuary” developed with Warner Bros. Discovery NZ. The series follows Hunter, an eccentric American billionaire hiding in New Zealand, who sells what he thought was an innocuous app to a Russian-affiliated private military company.
Quintus Studios and Canadian distributor Syndicado have agreed to a deal to create a docuseries exploring the extreme world of Kenyan truckers. “Mission to Collision,” shooting on location in the Mount Kenya region, will reveal the speed and high risk that Kenyan truckers endure to transport local products.
Studio 100 International and Gaumont’s Animation, Kids & Family division are collaborating with I Josh Around to co-develop a new animated series inspired by Rudyard Kipling classic The Jungle Book. “Jungle Book: Cub Club Adventures” (w/t), is based on a concept by Josh Fisher and currently in early development.
Cottonwood Media, kids content creator Coolabi Productions, and ZDF Studios, along with broadcasters BBC, ZDF, and France Télévisions, announced the new live-action series “The Lady Grace Mysteries.” Filming on the tween detective series is scheduled to take place in a British castle during spring 2025. |

The DPAA Global Summit is next week – Tuesday, October 15 at NYC’s Pier Sixty. Barry Frey, President and CEO of the DOOH trade organization, offers his take on the state of the DOOH business, and what’s in store at the big event.
A lot is being said about CTV spending. How does DOOH answer that trend?
DPAA has become a big tent. As many of our video-centric members have succeeded very well in DOOH, they have expanded to also compete for CTV budgets. As linear, cable and satellite decline, brands and consumers will always recognize the power of video (hence our over-arching theme of “Video Everywhere”). Plus, with DOOH increasingly available to buy programmatically, it has become easier to compete for dollars on an apples-to-apples basis.
What’s new in the measurability of DOOH?
We have many member companies offering measurement from a variety of angles/avenues: viewership, attention, attribution, and engagement delivering important data across the various forms of our members’ media be it large digital screens, place-based media, moving media, and more. One of the most exciting parts of this is seeing how our membership is delivering ROAS up, down and through the whole marketing funnel.
You recently commissioned a study on the state of DOOH advertising. Any one key finding you’d like to point out?
Yes, our recently unveiled DPAA Omnichannel Decision-Makers Study sponsored by Kochava and conducted by Ad Perceptions, which surveyed decision-makers at brands and agencies, indicates that 8 in 10 of these executives will recommend DOOH within the next 12 months. They are using DOOH increasingly to complement and enhance video and digital media plans.
You call the DPAA Video Everywhere Summit the largest one-day gathering in the industry. To what do you attribute to this success?
Each year we pace up in more attention and attendees. Last year, we had almost 1,000 registrations and it may come in a bit higher this year.
Part of the reason for the success of the DPAA Summit is that many years ago we realized that in order to inform and educate, we need to inspire, impassion and also entertain. So in addition to major brand leaders from Mastercard, Colgate, Amika, Danone, General Motors and others, plus speakers from WPP, IPG and other holdcos, we are delivering very relevant news content and entertainment.
The live Broadway cast from Back to the Future will perform for our audiences and NBC’s political expert and election night guru will speak with us about the incredibly important and consequential Presidential Election!

Banijay Entertainment’s “The Summit” is headed for three new markets. EndemolShine Nederland, Banijay Finland and Mastiff Norway producing for RTL, MTV and TV 2 are the latest to land the format.
Sphere Abacus has sold more than 50 hours of unscripted programming to Bell Media for French-speaking Canada, including reality series “Outback Truckers,” “Outback Opal Hunters” and “Outback Crystal Hunters,” all produced by Prospero Productions in Australia.
Among Hat Trick International’s MIPCOM 2024 titles is “Do You Want to Live Forever” from Australian independent producer Lune Media. HTI has secured both the format and finished program rights for the series, which was originally produced for Nine Network Australia.
