DirecTV has reached a deal to acquire Dish Network and its streaming brand, Sling TV. The agreement, subject to regulatory approval, involves AT&T selling its 70% stake in DirecTV to private equity firm TPG for $7.6 billion. DirecTV will pay $1 for Dish, and take on Dish’s billions of dollars in debt. The combination of DirecTV and Dish “will benefit US video consumers by creating a more robust competitive force in a video industry dominated by streaming services owned by large tech companies and programmers,” said the companies in a statement. A plan to merge the companies in 2002 was blocked by the FCC and the Justice Department over competitive concerns, before streaming forever changed the media landscape.
The upshot for DirecTV – and viewers? “This transaction should enable DirecTV to end the one size fits all ‘fat’ bundle once and for all and enable the rise of smaller, cheaper genre-based bundles that consumers have long desired,” Rich Greenfield, Managing Director and media analyst at LightShed Ventures, tells Cynopsis.
Lionsgate is offering US-based employees a voluntary severance and early retirement program to allow the company to “adapt our workforce to the disrupted business environment,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer in a memo to staff obtained by Deadline. In what may prove an incentive to take that deal, back-to-the-office rules are being tightened. Feltheimer said all Lionsgate employees at the EVP level and above will be expected in the office five days a week starting January 2, and current exemptions from the company’s back-to-the-office policy will be reviewed.

Kartoon Studios reports its animation production arm, Mainframe Studios, has secured series orders for over 145 episodes, and has four series in production with companies including Spin Master, Sony Kids, and Disney. “Over the past year, Mainframe Studios has experienced a significant increase in deal flow, signaling a strong business recovery, following the resolution of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) disputes in late Q3 and early Q4 of 2023,” said Brian Parisi, Chief Financial Officer of Kartoon Studios. “In the second quarter of 2024, Mainframe Studios’ production demand rebounded following the resolution of labor disputes.”
Trevor Donovan has been added to the cast of “When Hope Calls” in a two-episode story arc for season two, which will debut in early 2025 on Great American Family, then stream on Pure Flix.
