Just days after slamming Ryan Murphy’s true-crime drama series – “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” – as “inaccurate,” the currently incarcerated Menendez boys will participate in a new Netflix documentary series about their crimes. According to reports, “The Menendez Brothers” will debut on the streamer on October 7. According to Netflix, both brothers will revisit the trial in their own words. “Through extensive audio interviews with Lyle and Erik, lawyers involved in the trial, journalists who covered it, jurors, family, and other informed observers, acclaimed Argentinian director Alejandro Hartmann offers new insight and a fresh perspective on a case that people only think they know,” Netflix said. Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted in 1996 of the shotgun murders of their parents and are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.

North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson has threatened to sue CNN over a report last week that he had made several offensive comments on a porn website more than 10 years ago, including some where he called himself a “black Nazi.” Robinson has denied the reports and told Mediate that his legal team is determining how to “take CNN to task for what they have done to us.”

President Joe Biden is scheduled to join “The View” on Wednesday, the first time a sitting president has taped a live segment for the ABC talk show. The appearance also is the first television interview for Biden since he spoke during the first night of the Democratic National Convention in August. Biden has been on the show before – this will be his tenth – but those previous appearances were pre-recorded. Biden will sit with hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro, to discuss the administration’s efforts, the state of the 2024 presidential election and the President’s thoughts heading into Nov. 5.

Tamara Smart (Netflix’s “Resident Evil”) is joining the cast of Disney+’sPercy Jackson and the Olympians,” for season two which is currently in production and slated for a 2025 premiere. Smart joins Daniel Diemer (Tyson the cyclops) as a series regular along with Walker Scobell (Percy), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth), Aryan Simhadri (Grover), Charlie Bushnell (Luke) and Dior Goodjohn (Clarisse). Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal and Margaret Cho will have guest roles as the Gray Sisters.

Max has greenlit a four-part “Friends” game show in honor of the series 30th anniversary. “Fast Friends” is slated to begin production in October. The series will be shot inside the “Friends” Experience: The One in New York, a two-story, 17,000 square-foot attraction featuring 18 rooms, activations and recreated sets. No release date has been set.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Kyle Chandler (“Friday Night Lights”) is in talks to star in HBO’s latest series – “Lanterns” – based on the DC comic book “Green Lantern,” playing Hal Jordan, the role portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 movie. The eight-episode “Lanterns” received a straight-to-series order in June and is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros Television and DC Studios.

The new Fall season on Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel, and World Fishing Network features a lineup of fresh episodes and new series focused on hunting, shooting, fishing, and the wild food lifestyle. Among the highlights: Outdoor Channel celebrates its 30th anniversary iwith a “Taste of the Wild” block on Monday evenings featuring new episodes and fresh series showcasing field-to-fork fare, including two new series – “Andrew Zimmern’s Field to Fire” (9p) and “Hardcore Carnivore” (9:30p).

“The 78th Annual Tony Awards” will return to Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Sunday, June 8, 2025 at 8p on CBS. The Tony Awards have aired on CBS since 1978 and are produced in collaboration with Tony Award Productions, a joint venture of The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, and White Cherry Entertainment. Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss are executive producers and showrunners for White Cherry Entertainment. Weiss will serve as director. Jack Sussman is also an executive producer.

STREAMING

FETV (Family Entertainment Television) has launched on DirecTV Stream, the satellite giant’s streaming service. FETV has been available to DirecTV satellite customers since 2017. FETV’s current lineup features popular television series such as Emergency!, Leave It to Beaver, Perry Mason, and Adam-12.

MadTech launched MadConnect as a Snowflake Native App on Snowflake Marketplace, allowing publishers, platforms, agencies, and brands to establish bi-directional data connections between their Snowflake environment to any source or destination platform in the advertising industry. MadConnect enables joint customers to conduct ETL and reverse ELT across a host of advertising destinations where their customers’ first-party data lives. MadTech says the solution is effective for key use cases, including Audience Activation, Campaign Optimization, Measurement, Reporting, Data Enrichment, and Data Collaboration.

Image recognition technology company IRCODE has launched a product it says is a first-to-market technology solution designed to bridge the gap between traditional media and the digital world. According to the company, its patented Exact Match technology combines physical and digital marketing, empowering consumers to take a simple photo of a billboard, frame of a TV show, or even product on the street, and then be transported to a custom digital experience curated by a brand. IRCODE will showcase its technology at ADWEEK’s Brandweek.

Go Button Media has reached a new slate deal with partners Autentic and Super Channel, which includes delivery of six series, each of six hours’ duration, over the next three years. Autentic will handle the titles’ global distribution outside of Canada. The first greenlit title is “Secrets of Ancient Structures,” which will deliver in the summer of 2025.

Banijay Benelux’s scripted label, NL Film, has signed a first-look deal with Sunny Pictures, a newly established production company. Led by Paula van der Oest and Mark van Eeuwen, Sunny Pictures makes original films and television for both local and international audiences.

Creative Diversity Network (CDN) and ScreenSkills have announced a strategic partnership, which will include co-siting the two organizations together.

BossaNova Media has announced a string of sales for two new series from Los Angeles-based Stampede, the production company behind the long-running “Borderforce USA” franchise. Stampede’s “Seized at Sea” and “Airport Security: USA” have been acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery for its streaming platforms and linear networks across Iberia, Italy, Poland, Turkey, the Benelux and the Nordic territories and CBS Reality (the Middle East, Africa and Romania). In addition, both shows have been picked up by Hearst Networks EMEA (formerly A+E Networks EMEA) for the UK. In a third deal, “Airport Security,” which is due to be delivered in Q3 of 2024, has been licensed by WELT for Germany and German-speaking Europe.

Love Nature announced a new slate of original programming. “Tusker,” from Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Allison Argo and Bob Poole, chronicles the life of a bull elephant and his pivotal role in the wilderness of Kenya. “My Best Friend’s an Animal” returns for its second season, while the “Enchanted” franchise expands with a new installment, “Enchanted Waters,” from Off the Fence. The new slate will premiere on Love Nature’s branded linear and streaming platforms, and on Sky Nature in the UK, Germany and Italy. Blue Ant Studios’ rights division will oversee licensing opportunities for the new titles outside of the commissioning territories.

China’s Beijing Miaow’s House, Tencent Video and GZ Art-land are partnering with New York’s China Bridge Content to develop “ViViCat: Miles Purr Hour,” a new CGI animated comedy for teens and young adults based on the hit short form seriesThe Daily Life of ViViCat.”

RATINGS

“Halloween Baking Championship” delivered Food Network’s highest Monday prime rating of the year to date among Adults 18+ and Women 18+ and garnered L3 ratings (.85 and 1.19 respectively) that more than doubled the network’s ratings benchmarks over the prior six weeks in those key demos. The premiere, which ranked as the #1 non-news/sports cable program of the night, reached more than 2.3 million total cross platform viewers across Food Network, Max and discovery+.

Coming off its best quarter on record, El Rey Rebel said it has more than quadrupled (+301%) its year over year performance since Fuse Media partnered with the Latino-focused FAST channel in August 2023. El Rey Rebel offers films, cult classics, Kung Fu classics, martial arts, grindhouse, gritty crime, and extreme sports.
