Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos previewed the streaming giant’s next viewer report – due Thursday – at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York September 18 and challenged other streamers to be more “transparent.” According to Deadline, Sarandos said Thursday’s report will show about 94 billion hours of total viewing on the streamer in the first half of this year.
Transparency, convergence and innovation were topics that kept surfacing at the Cynopsis Big TV Summit on Wednesday, along with a heaping helping of retail media. Agencies, networks and brands gathered at NYC’s City Winery and expressed frustration with measurement (“I want one source of truth,” said A+E Networks’ Roseann Montenes), while acknowledging significant progress. There was support for local (“We can find white space in local where we can’t reach nationally,” noted Liberty Mutual’s Taylor Bynes). And the value of artificial intelligence was acknowledged – it helped JCPenney “punch above our weight,” said Bill Cunningham, and NBCU’s Maggie Zhang pointed out that the work that AI can do with data “would take years for humans to assemble.” As for cable versus streaming, MAGNA’s Jon Lefferts spoke for many in the room with the observation, “I don’t think a lot of people these days can distinguish between them. You should look at it as a whole.”
Dillon Lawson-Johnston and Criswell Fiordalis have launched Guggenheim Brothers Media (GB Media), a private investment firm dedicated to making minority investments in innovative companies and teams with a proven track record of success within the entertainment industry. More specifically, the firm focuses on businesses that are harnessing intellectual property, nurturing talent through unique monetization ecosystems, and streamlining content creation across all platforms. GB Media’s first equity investments include comedic content platform and talent management company Stapleview and The Lighthouse, a newly launched company within the Whalar Group focused on creators.
Charter Communications awarded $1.3 million in grants to 66 nonprofit organizations through its 2024 Spectrum Digital Education program. Since launching in 2017, the program has committed more than $10 million to nonprofits focused on improving digital literacy, workforce development and educational access in unserved and undeserved communities across Charter’s 41-state service area.
Weigel Broadcasting Co. and DIRECTV today announced a multi-year carriage deal for Weigel’s Start TV Network. Investigation Discovery is in production on a docuseries exploring the rise and influence of the rapper and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs and the allegations of violent behavior and illegal activity that have trailed him. Maxine Productions (“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV”) and IPC are producing the series in association with Rolling Stone films. Combs was arrested on September 17 in New York on federal charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty, was denied bail and is being detained as he awaits trial. The multipart docuseries is set to premiere in 2025 on ID and Max.

Daniel Lubetzky, founder of KIND Snacks, Camino Partners and Builders Movement, is joining the panel of Sharks on the upcoming 16th season of “Shark Tank,” premiering October 18 at 8p on ABC. A guest Shark for the past five seasons, Lubetzky joins Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran; Lori Greiner; Robert Herjavec; Daymond John; and Kevin O’Leary.
“Belle Collective” will premiere its new season November 1 at 8p on OWN. The series continues to spotlight the personal and professional journeys of a group of successful boss women in Jackson, Miss.
Season 25 of “America’s Test Kitchen” will premiere September 21 on public television stations. The latest season will feature 26 episodes airing weekly through Spring 2025. In celebration of the milestone 25th Anniversary of the most-watched cooking show on public television, “America’s Test Kitchen” will air a 60-minute primetime special on September 20 at 10p on Create and public television stations.
“Life Below Zero” returns October 8 at 9p on National Geographic, with the new season welcoming Johnny Rolfe and the Roach Family from “Next Generation,” and Gage and Avery Hoffman from “First Alaskans.
“Expedition Unknown” returns to Discovery with a two-part season premiere on October 9 at 9p. Seasoned explorer Josh Gates travels to the ancient city of Petra, Jordan to learn how a mysterious desert civilization created one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
“Saturday Night Live” will return for its 50Th season on September 28, with host Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and musical guest Jelly Roll. On October 5, comedian Nate Bargatze will host with musical guest Coldplay, followed by Ariana Grande and Stevie Nicks on October 12 and Michael Keaton and Billie Eilish on October 19. John Mulaney will host on November 2 with musical guest Chappell Roan.

Peacock original “Anatomy of Lies” will premiere on October 15, about the rise and fall of “Grey’s Anatomy” star writer Elisabeth Finch, whose lies fooled Hollywood for years and became fodder for many high-profile episodes of “Grey’s.” The story is told by some of her closest contacts, many speaking for the first time. Originally reported in the Vanity Fair article “Scene Stealer,” the docuseries reveals how Finch saved her best fiction for her own life story and exploited the empathy of those around her.
FETV (Family Entertainment Television) will host a “Highway Patrol” marathon on October 4 (10-4, get it?), featuring ten episodes selected by show superfan Gary Goltz. The marathon will air from 7a-12p, containing on-air previews and interstitials with behind-the-scenes information.
Nickelodeon’s and Paramount +’s Spongebob Squarepants 25th Anniversary Celebration gets into the Halloween spirit with all-new specials – “SpongeBob Squarepants: Kreepaway Kamp” on October 10 and “The Patrick Star Show: Something Stupid This Way Comes,” on October 14. All new episodes of “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “The Patrick Star Show” will continue to air across Nickelodeon and Paramount+.
“Family Secrets: The Disappearance of Alissa Turney” premieres Sunday, October 13 at 8p on Oxygen True Crime. The documentary explores what happens when one unrelenting woman demands a thorough investigation of her sister’s vanishing and exhausts all traditional legal avenues.
The Paley Center for Media unveiled the schedule for its 18th annual PaleyFest Fall TV Previews. Television fans will be treated to conversations and sneak previews, premiering on a rolling basis on the Paley Center’s YouTube channel on September 20, starting at noon. YouTube TV is reorganizing channel content on its connected TV app into seasons and episodes, making it easier for viewers to tune in. In a blog post Wednesday, YouTube Chief Product Officer Johanna Voolich said the company is “making other improvements to the TV experience with immersive content that plays directly from a creator’s channel, streamlined subscription options and easier access to links in descriptions.” The updates will roll out over the next few months, with the seasons/episodes reorg slated for 2025.

IAB Europe and IAB have collaborated on the release of the first industry definitions and measurement standards for in-store Retail Media. The standards, which are open for public comment until November 1, have been developed to address the rapidly expanding in-store Retail Media opportunities and offer unified definitions, measurement standards, and guidelines for ad formats and store zones. The standards cover a range of essential areas including:
– Definitions: Clear terminology for in-store digital Retail Media components.
– Formats: Recommended formats for in-store advertising placements.
– Store Zones: Standardized classification of key areas within stores where media can be deployed (e.g., entry, checkout, aisle).
– Measurement: Guidelines for tracking, reporting, and analyzing campaign performance across various in-store formats.
Election-related uncertainty is impacting consumer purchasing decisions, according to 84.51°’sSeptember Consumer Digest, with 18% of shoppers delaying big–ticket purchases, 15% holding off on making investment decision and 13% postponing car purchases. ITV Daytime said it has commissioned three new series for its weekend site – “The Royal Beat,” a fortnightly royal-themed topical chat show hosted by journalist Kate Thornton, “Nisha Katona’s Home Kitchen,” a weekly cookery show with British restaurateur Nisha Katona, and season 2 of “Prue Leith’s Cotswold Kitchen.” “The Royal Beat” will premiere in October, with “Nisha Katona’s Home Kitchen” debuting in 2025, both on ITV and ITVX.
German factual content distributor Autentic Distribution sold two documentaries to NHK Japan – “A Life Among Elephants” and “Wings of Courage – The Eagle Huntress of Mongolia.” In addition, Autentic sold the worldwide rights to seasons 1 and 2 of “Colossal Machines” to National Geographic as well as a 59-hour package deal to Canal+ Poland for three seasons of “Hot Roads – The World’s Most Dangerous Roads,” “Deadly Roads” “Highway to the Arctic – Canada’s Ice Roads,” the automotive series “GRIP,” and four seasons of the history series “What Went Wrong.”
Corus Entertainment will launch two new lifestyle brands in Canada on December 30 – Flavour Network and Home Network – with more than 460 premiere hours in Winter/Spring 2025. The networks will feature a mix of Canadian original programming, and international acquisitions through new and expanded license deals.

ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” drew more than 15 million viewers for its Week 2 matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles on September 16, the third most-watched ESPN/ESPN2 (non-ABC) telecast in more than 50 games. In addition, “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli” delivered 1.34 million viewers, a 12% increase over its 2023 regular season average, while viewership for pregame show “Monday Night Countdown” reached 1.4 million, up 8% from its season debut.
“Live With Kelly and Mark” was the No. 1 talk show among Adults 25-54 while “Sherri” finished season 2 at No. 2, moving up one spot from last season, including summer repeats, according to Nielsen. “Family Feud” again finished in the top spot among Game Shows, followed by “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune,” while “People Puzzler” was No.7.
