“Schitt’s Creek” stars Eugene and Dan Levy kicked off the 76th Annual Emmys on Sunday night talking about the night’s nominees. “I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether ‘The Bear’ is a comedy,” Eugene said about the Best Comedy nominee, “but in true spirit of ‘The Bear’ we will not be making any jokes.” The FX on Hulu series quickly scooped up trophies in multiple comedy categories, and the night went on to include some genuinely funny (Selena Gomez, stop laughing) and heartfelt (Jean Smart, keep talking) moments. Among other highlights, presenter Candice Bergen compared VP candidate JD Vance’s attack on “childless cat ladies” to VP Dan Quayle’s criticism in 1992 of Murphy Brown becoming a single mother. The day before Sunday’s Emmys and college football, Disney and DirecTV ended a nearly two-week blackout with a preliminary agreement that restored Disney’s networks to DirecTV customers. The companies agreed to offer “multiple genre-specific options” for slimmer bundles of channels at lower price points, spanning sports, entertainment, kids & family. DirecTV will also be able to distribute the forthcoming ESPN standalone streaming service at no extra cost to DirecTV customers. “Through this first-of-its-kind collaboration, DirecTV and Disney are giving customers the ability to tailor their video experience through more flexible options,” said the companies in a joint statement. “DirecTV and Disney have a long-standing history of connecting consumers to the best entertainment, and this agreement furthers that commitment by recognizing both the tremendous value of Disney’s content and the evolving preferences of DirecTV’s customers.”
Asked about the “Baby Reindeer” defamation lawsuit, in which the story’s real-life alleged stalker takes issue with the fact that she was not convicted of a crime, as the character in the show was, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said, “I’m surprised that it’s a continued debate.” While Richard Gadd’s experience in “Baby Reindeer” is described as a true story, Sarandos told The Times of London, “It was no one’s intent to use a label recklessly. That is Richard’s true story. The fact that you’re watching on television says that parts of it were certainly fictionalized and dramatized.”
The Property Masters Guild announced the winners of the inaugural PMG MacGuffin Awards, celebrating achievements of Property Masters, on Saturday. Among the winners for TV shows were Laura Roeper (“The Bear”), Julie Heuer (“That ‘90s Show”), Jeffrey Johnson (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), Brad Einhorn (“Perry Mason”) and Justin Onofriechuk (“The Last of Us”).
Twitter’s brand valuation has declined 88% since Elon Musk acquired it in 2022, according to brand equity valuation platform Brand Finance, from $5.7 billion to $673 million. “Musk’s controversial rebranding of Twitter has resulted in a dramatic and abrupt decline in brand value and strength,” stated Brand Finance Managing Director Richard Haigh. “The hasty abandonment of a globally recognized name, without a clear migration plan, has had disastrous consequences, alienating key stakeholders and eroding the brand’s core strengths.” Google ranked as the number one media brand for the fourth consecutive year, followed by TikTok. There’s a “Melrose Place” revival in the works, and “Everyone has agreed to do it,” said Daphne Zuniga as the cast reunited on Saturday for 90s Con Florida. “It is in talks. It’s all in the (TV) family: Melissa Gilbert is starring in a two-episode arc on season 12 of Hallmark Channel’s “When Calls the Heart,” executive produced by the son of her “Little House of the Prairie” Pa, Michael Landon Jr. Gilbert and Landon had connected at a “Little House on the Prairie” 50th anniversary event earlier this year. News of the casting broke at the Hallmark Channel drama’s annual fan event. “’When Calls the Heart’ has long drawn comparisons to ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ for its charming and compelling stories of hope, human connection and frontier survival,” said Kelly Garrett, VP of Hallmark Media programming. “It was only fitting that the first people to hear this special news were the Hearties — devoted fans who have celebrated the show year after year and made it such a success.”
Tim Meadows (“Saturday Night Live”) is set to star in “DMV,” a comedy pilot for CBS. The series, from Dana Klein, Kapital Entertainment, TrillTV and CBS Studios, is based on a short story by Katherine Heiny.

Two films make their linear debuts on HBO next month. “Tuesday,” starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a mother who must confront Death when it arrives in the form of an astonishing talking bird, premieres Saturday, October 12 at 8p on HBO, followed a week later by “Maxxxine,” centered on an adult film star and aspiring actress who finally gets her big break, only to deal with a stalker. Both films drop on Max a day ahead of their HBO premieres.
Tis the Season of Screams kicked off Friday the 13th on Shudder TV. The stunt features new film releases, series, specials and live watch parties. The three-month celebration will include the return of the Ghoul Log, Halloween Hotline for those in need of horror movie recommendations, and a spotlight on horror franchise films.
