Disney networks went dark on DirecTV after the companies failed to come to terms on a new carriage contract. Rob Thun, Chief Content Officer at DirecTV, accused Disney of chasing “maximum profits and dominant control at the expense of consumers – making it harder for them to select the shows and sports they want at a reasonable price.” Countered Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, Co-Chairmen, Disney Entertainment, and Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, ESPN, in a statement, “DirecTV chose to deny millions of subscribers access to our content just as we head into the final week of the US Open and gear up for college football and the opening of the NFL season. While we’re open to offering DirecTV flexibility and terms which we’ve extended to other distributors, we will not enter into an agreement that undervalues our portfolio of television channels and programs.” The blackout affects over 11 million subscribers.
HBO Latino and Max renewed “City of God: The Fight Rages On” for a second season. The series, a sequel to the 2002 film, debuted on August 25.
“Dead Boy Detectives” was not so lucky – Netflix canceled the supernatural drama after one season. The series, set in the “Sandman” universe, dropped on the streamer in April.
CNN’s interview with Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz delivered 6.3 million viewers on Thursday, according to Nielsen. That’s the network’s biggest audience since its June debate between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump, which drew 9.7 million viewers.
Nexstar Media Group cited recent Supreme Court rulings in an FCC filing on Friday, arguing it is entitled to a jury trial before it can be required to pay the $720,000 fine levied by the Media Bureau in February. The FCC fined Nexstar after it asked Hawaiian Telcom to withdraw a pending retransmission consent complaint and agree not to file a new one regarding their carriage dispute that led to a three-week blackout. Hawaiian Telcom refused, instead filing a new complaint. Nexstar pointed to Securities Exchange Commission v. Jarkesy and Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo as alterations to the regulatory landscape that mandate FCC to drop the fine.
CNN Films has acquired “Carville: Winning is Everything, Stupid,” chronicling eighteen tumultuous months inside the 2024 election from the vantage point of cantankerous Democratic operative James Carville. Produced by Altimeter Films, the film is set to release in theaters in the fall and will premiere Saturday, October 5 at 7p on CNN. |

A report from DoubleVerify revealed a striking number of faked online reviews – by DV’s count, in the past year the number of AI-generated fake reviews tripled. In one instance, DV found that 50% of reviews on the streaming app on a popular smart TV platform were fraudulent. Making matters worse is the proliferation of generative AI crafting app reviews that are used to deceive consumers into downloading potentially harmful apps. Some fraudulent apps can hijack devices, running ads incessantly, even when devices appear to be off. These apps can also be difficult to remove, with some causing the device to malfunction or shut down unexpectedly. Concludes the report, “As generative AI continues to reshape industries, its dual potential for innovation and exploitation becomes clear in advertising.”
Four days after passing a law that would require permission from performers in order to create digital replicas of them, the California state senate passed a law restricting the usage of AI-created digital replicas of deceased performers. The laws await the signature of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The Trade Desk has quietly been developing its own smart TV operating system, according to Lowpass. The digital advertising company is reportedly offering better revenue sharing deals than competitors like Google TV, Amazon’s Fire TV OS, and Roku.
Customer management and monetization company Evergent, which focuses on streaming and digital subscription businesses, and digital platform cybersecurity company Irdeto have expanded their partnership. “As focus shifts from subscriber growth to retention and profitability amid macroeconomic pressures, streaming companies, pay-TV operators and platform providers are diversifying their content and service offerings to create stickier propositions that maximize loyalty and revenue per user,” said a press release from the companies. “Enabling effective bundling and super aggregation is critical for tier one media organizations and OTT providers that want to deepen customer billing relationships and provide value-added services that include a wider range of niche and local content, gaming and IoT devices.”
