Night two of the Democratic National Convention averaged 20.6 million viewers across 12 networks, up from 20 million for the event’s first night. The first night of the Republican National Convention drew 18.13 million viewers, while the second night dipped to 14.8 million.
The Walt Disney Co.’s board of directors has named James Gorman to head up the search for a successor for CEO Bob Iger. Iger, in his second stint as Disney’s chief, has said he will step down after his contract expires in 2026. The Disney board is said to be considering four current candidates for CEO – Disney Entertainment Co-chairs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro and Josh D’Amaro, Head of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.
About 97% of consumers consider long-form content to be the most premium and believe watching long-form premium content elicits positive emotions, with almost 90% saying it’s a good use of their time, according to a study from DirecTV Advertising and Publicis Media. The research – “Premium, Defined: Long-Form Content Drives Ad Success” – also found that 62% of those surveyed appreciate that brands advertising in long-form premium content make it more affordable to view, and two-in-three report having purchased a product they’ve seen advertised within long-form premium content.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that journalist, anchor and author Jane Pauley, and documentarian, director and producer Alex Gibney will be the Lifetime Achievement honorees at the 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards. Pauley will be honored for her career in news broadcasting at the News ceremony on September 25, while Gibney will be honored for his contributions to the field of documentary filmmaking at the Documentary ceremony on September 26. Both ceremonies will take place live at the Palladium Times Square in New York City, and will be streamed live on NATAS’s dedicated viewing platform.
The cause of death for fitness guru Richard Simmons was reportedly a combination of complications from recent falls and heart disease. Simmons died on July 13, the day after his birthday. TMZ reported after his death that Simmons had fallen at his Los Angeles home on July 12, but declined medical attention. He was found by his housekeeper the next morning. |

Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) has been signed to star as murderous Grace Bernard in “How To Kill Your Family,” a Netflix series inspired by Bella Mackie’s best-selling novel of the same name. The eight-part series, announced at Edinburgh TV Festival, will be a first production for Netflix from Sid Gentle Films Ltd (“Killing Eve”) with Emma Moran (“Extraordinary”) at the helm as lead writer. The novel itself has sold over 1.2 million copies since its debut in 2021.
Great American Family, has started production for “Home Sweet Christmas,” a movie starring Candace Cameron Bure (“Ainsley McGregor Mysteries”) and Cameron Mathison (“A Kindhearted Christmas”), which will premiere during the network’s Great American Christmas 2024. Great American family added that the previously announced “Jingle Bells, Wedding Bells” will not go into production in 2024. Candace Cameron Bure’s two Christmas films this holiday are “Home Sweet Christmas” and “A Christmas Less Traveled.”
Katey Sagal (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Mark Harelik (“The Morning Show”) have joined the cast for the second season of Netflix live-action anime show. The series is a live-action adaptation of one of the longest-running animes in history.

AMC Networks’ September lineup includes the long-awaited return of AMC’s “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol” on Sunday, September 29 at 9p, one week after the conclusion of the dystopian series “Snowpiercer” on Sunday, September 22 at 9p.
All eight episodes of Hulu’s “Rivals”, the upcoming adaptation of Dame Jilly Cooper’s iconic novel, will launch Friday, October 18.
Season three of “The Lincoln Lawyer” will premiere Thursday, October 17 on Netflix. The 10-episode season will see the return of stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole, Angus Sampson and Yaya DaCosta.
The Africa Channel announced its fall programming. Medical drama “Wounds” will premiere in the US on September 1, followed by the “Sex in the City”- style comedy-drama series “Lavish” on September 29, and Nigerian drama “Flawsome” on October 27. Restaurant chain Chick-Fil-A plans to launch its own streaming platform with its own slate of original programming. Deadline reports the fast-food giant has been working with several production companies to produce family-friendly shows, especially those in the unscripted space, including a family-friendly game show from Glassman Media, which has produced “The Wall” for NBC, and Sugar23, which has produced “13 Reasons Why” for Netflix. The restaurant chain also is looking to license and acquire additional content.
In the wake of a federal judge blocking the release of the streaming sports channel Venu from Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Fox DirecTV chief content officer Rob Thun called for more flexibility in video packaging, adding that it is up to programmers to allow that to happen. In a blog post, Thun said while DirecTV disagrees with Venu’s strategy, it highlights the need for offering consumers “skinnier” packages of not just sports but local channels, entertainment, news, family and movie genres. “DirecTV believes that programmers need to collaborate with pay TV distributors to deliver entertainment options that align with consumer preferences,” Thun said, by offering flexible packages, lower-priced alternatives and an aggregated experience. “Pay TV subscribers have been declining because of our collective failure to evolve to meet consumer preferences, not due to external forces. Without fundamental change, costs will continue to soar, consumer satisfaction will erode, and the entire ecosystem will suffer,” Thun said.

Global watermarking company Verance announced the availability of technology to combat deep fakes and AI-generated disinformation using open watermarking standards. The solution enables social media platforms to authenticate broadcast content in user uploads and uses Verance Aspect to enable broadcast content to be authenticated by social media platforms, devices and disinformation analysts. Using industry standards developed and published by ATSC and C2PA, broadcast adopters of Verance Aspect can enable recipients of their content to determine whether it has been modified, as well as to locate an authentic version of the published asset.

About 69% of LGBTQ+ consumers are more likely to try grocery or household items that visibly support the LGBTQ+ community, according to a study conducted by LGBTQ+ streaming network Revry and Nielsen. The study – “Revry LGBTQ+ Streaming Audience Insights powered by Nielsen” – also found that 66% of LGBTQ+ viewers are more inclined to purchase from brands that advertise in LGBTQ+ inclusive programming or feature LGBTQ+ individuals in their campaigns. In addition, 89% of LGBTQ+ consumers report making grocery and household item purchases daily to weekly and ads in the Grocery and Household category in the second quarter had an average Completion Rate of 99.18%, above Revry’s benchmark of 95%. Both Grocery/beverage and household items had a higher overall completion rate above Revry’s benchmark at 99.10%.

TNT Sports has announced its commentator lineup ahead of its opening week of Mountain West football coverage. Week 1 on truTV and Max will kick off with the San José State Spartans hosting the Sacramento State Hornets on August 29, at 10p. Ari Wolfe (play-by-play), Darius Walker (analyst) and Jared Greenberg (reporter) will call the action from San José. Opening week coverage will continue two nights later as the San Diego State Aztecs host the Texas A&M Commerce Lions at 8p. TNT Sports’ Wolfe, Walker and Greenberg will be in San Diego to call the game. Studio coverage throughout the season for TNT Sports will be hosted by Adam Lefkoe with a roster of analysts including Champ Bailey, Takeo Spikes and Victor Cruz.
