The first of three stages of layoffs started at Paramount Global yesterday. Part of the company’s plan to reduce annual expenses by $500 million, the staff reduction will impact 15% of the US workforce, with 90% of the cuts expected to be made by the end of September. “We know that having to part ways with teammates whose contributions have been instrumental to our success is incredibly hard,” read a memo from George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins, the three members of the Office of the CEO. “In partnership with our HR leaders, we are committed to providing support to employees transitioning on from Paramount and to our teams who will need to adapt to these changes.”
Part of the cuts include the shuttering of Paramount Television Studios. “This is not a decision based on how PTVS performed. This move is the result of significant changes in the TV and streaming marketplace and the need to streamline our company,” said Cheeks. “This studio consistently punched above its weight in attracting top storytellers and stars to create best-in-class series. I want to thank every PTVS employee for shepherding a slate of shows that helped usher Paramount into the streaming era.”
In a first, the Democratic Convention, which kicks off Monday in Chicago, will be streamed on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. “With more and more Americans consuming their news in new and innovative ways, Democrats stand ready to meet them where they are – and to bring our vision for a brighter future to households all across the country,” said Alex Hornbrook, the executive director of the Democratic National Convention Committee.

Hulu handed a series order to “Mid-Century Modern,” starring Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham and Linda Lavin, about best friends who decide to live together. The comedy comes from David Kohan & Max Mutchnik (“Will & Grace”) and Ryan Murphy.
Apple TV+ is adding to its “Long Way…” franchise, bringing back “Long Way Up” stars Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman for another motorcycle ride. “On a rather tricky, sandy bit of ‘Long Way Up,’ Charley and I started to daydream about another trip to keep our minds off the scary road at hand,” said McGregor. “This is that trip. Rusty old bikes and 10,000 miles of Scandinavia, and Eastern and Central Europe. A big loop from my house in Scotland to Charley’s house in England. Long way home…magic.”
PBS has renewed “The Great American Recipe” for season four. Alejandro Ramos will return as host.
AMC+ and Sundance Now have granted a second season to drama “Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale,” adapted from the novel by V.V. James. The six-episode sophomore run of the Sundance Now Original series is scheduled to begin filming this month in Ireland and will debut in 2025. The series premiered earlier this year on Sundance Now and AMC+ and was Sundance Now’s biggest series debut ever on both platforms.
Netflix has ordered an animated “Ghostbusters” series, reports Variety. The show comes from Sony Pictures Animation, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. as executive producers.

According to June data from Comscore, out of 69 million YouTube viewers, nine million are A18-24 and 20 million are A25-34. What does that mean for marketers? “In the modern cross-media landscape, audiences across the board are looking to consume content when they want and on the screen of their choice.
