AMC reported net revenues of $626 million for the second quarter, down 8% from the prior year. Advertising revenues decreased 11% to $149 million due to linear ratings declines and a challenging ad market, partly offset by digital and advanced advertising revenue growth. Streaming revenues of $150 million increased 9% from the prior year. “AMC Networks continues to find opportunities in a strategic plan built around programming, partnerships and profitability,” said CEO Kristin Dolan. “Key to our plan is the creation and curation of celebrated films and series, and making them available to audiences everywhere, including through an exciting new branded content licensing agreement with Netflix. In the first half of 2024, we’ve made significant progress against our strategic priority of generating strong free cash flow, and we’re well on our way to achieving our free cash flow guidance for the full year.

The contents of the Cartoon Network website were pulled last week. Viewers are being directed to Max with the message, “Looking for episodes of your favorite Cartoon Network shows? Check out what’s available to stream on Max (subscription required)”. Said a spokesperson, “We are focusing on the Cartoon Network shows and social media where we find consumers are the most engaged.” The network is still available on linear TV.

“Vanderpump Villa,” renewed for season two by Hulu, is adding “Vanderpump Rules” alum Stassi Schroeder to the cast. Hulu is also developing a docu-comedy, “Stassi Says,” with Schroeder. The series is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions.

Rock star Huey Lewis (“The Power of Love”) is set to star in and execute produce comedic mocumentary “Whatever Happened to Huey Lewis.” In development at Fox, the project comes from Kapital Entertainment, Kimmelot and Fox Entertainment Studios.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Oxygen’s “The Girl on the Milk Carton” premieres Sunday, August 25 at 7p. The two-part true crime special focuses on one of the first missing children to be featured on a milk carton.

The actresses playing the Gray Sisters for season two of Disney+’s “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” were announced at Disney’s D23 event on Saturday. Added to the cast of the fantasy series are Sandra Bernhard as Anger, Kristen Schall as Tempest, and Margaret Cho as Wasp.

COMING UP

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” starts streaming exclusively on Max on Friday, August 16. The Warner Bros. Pictures film was released in theaters on May 24.

Season 35 of “The Simpsons,” which wrapped on Fox May, will premiere on Disney+ on October 2. The streamer will also be the exclusive home to four new episodes of the animated comedy, including a Christmas-themed double episode.

User engagement on X is up, with clickthrough rates climbing 20% and CPMs skyrocketing 423%, according to Tracer’s July Benchmarking & Data Trends report. Key takeaways include:
· The downward trend for cost per clicks continued into July 2024, mirroring the month-over-month CPM drops. Most platforms saw decreased CPCs compared to June 2023, with the exception of X, where a 50% drop in CTRs pushed CPCs up by a 701%, coupled with a 297% increase in CPMs.
· Meta’s a Mixed BagInstagram saw a 79% increase in CTRs, and CPMs rose 12% from July 2023 to 2024. On Facebook, both CTRs and CPMs have dropped by 25%.
· TikTok isn’t slowing down, even with the threat of a ban. CPMs increased by 11% in July, in line with recent months, and there was a 47% jump in CTRs from June 2023 to 2024.

Tracer’s table below reports the percentage changes in key metrics across digital channels in July when compared to the preceding month.

The Global Alliance for Responsible Media has shut down following a lawsuit by X alleging the group conspired to boycott advertising on the platform. “GARM is a small, not-for-profit initiative, and recent allegations that unfortunately misconstrue its purpose and activities have caused a distraction and significantly drained its resources and finances,” said the group said in a statement on Friday. “GARM therefore is making the difficult decision to discontinue its activities.” Posted X CEO Linda Yaccarino, “No small group should be able to monopolize what gets monetized. This is an important acknowledgement and a necessary step in the right direction.” GARM was founded in 2019 to help brands avoid having their advertisements appear with illegal or harmful content.

SPORTS UPDATE

CBS Sports will produce the two NFL games that Netflix is airing this Christmas. In addition to a production fee, CBS will receive promotional spots for its own programming and ad inventory in the broadcast coverage of the games in the local markets of the teams. “CBS has consistently proven itself to be a best-in-class partner,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction Series and Sports.

Olympic female boxer Imane Khelif has filed an online harassment complaint in Paris. The Algerian gold medalist was the target of an online hate campaign about her gender identity, describing her as a transgender person competing in the wrong category and committing “violence against women.” The comments were viewed over 100 million times, said her lawyer, who stated, “The criminal investigation will determine who initiated this misogynistic, racist, and sexist campaign, but will also have to focus on those who fueled this digital lynching. The unfair harassment suffered by the boxing champion will remain the biggest stain of these Olympic Games.”

2024 CrossFit Games competitor Lazar Dukic, a 28-year-old from Serbia, died on Thursday, drowning during the swimming portion of the first event on the opening day of competition. Events that day were canceled, but competition resumed on Friday. “To say our community is shattered after the tragic loss of Lazar Đukić would be an understatement,” said CEO of CrossFit Don Faul.” Yet we’re inspired by how the community has responded with love and support for Lazar’s family and fellow competitors.
