Disney’s streaming operations turned a profit for the first time, shared the company in its quarterly report, with $47 million in DTC operating income versus a $512 million loss in the year-ago period. That’s ahead of schedule – the company had projected its streaming business would reach profitability during the current quarter. The profit at ESPN+ more than made up for the $19 million loss at Hulu and Disney+, which are both expected to turn a profit in the current quarter. Upcoming price hikes across most of Disney’s streaming plans were announced on Monday, and on Wednesday, Disney CEO Bob Iger said Disney+ will be cracking down on password sharing “in earnest” next month.

TelevisaUnivision wrapped its upfront season with single digit growth, boosted by sports and streaming. There was strong demand for Liga MX and UEFA Champions League, and streamer ViX posted volume up in a double-digit percentage range versus last year. “We are proud of the historic number of advertisers committing to the Hispanic audience in this year’s Upfront marketplace, underscoring TelevisaUnivision’s distinguished leadership in serving this critical, diverse and dynamic consumer base across all platforms,” said Donna Speciale, President of US Advertising and Marketing. “From linear and streaming to social and digital, more brands than ever have leaned in to leverage our strengthened capabilities, embracing culture and language as drivers of their future relevance and success.”

WPP announced an agreement to sell a majority stake in advisory firm FGS Global to KKR for $775 million. KKR already has a 30% stake in the company.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) sent a letter asking the DOJ and FCC to investigate upcoming streaming sports service joint venture Venu Sports. “Fox, Disney, and Warner Bros. have proposed to stop competing for live sports and jointly develop a product that could allow them to leverage their joint dominance over sports programming to favor their own streaming network, reducing competition and depriving consumers of choices in over-the-air, cable, or streaming providers,” reads the letter. “DOJ and FCC should closely scrutinize this transaction and take immediate action to block it if it violates antitrust law, or if it does not serve the ‘public interest, convenience, and necessity.’” Fubo is currently trying to invoke a preliminary injunction to stop the service before it launches.

Roku is launching a sports FAST channel on Monday, August 12. Roku Sports Channel, a 24/7 ad-supported service, will offer live Major League Baseball games, live Formula E car racing, Top Rank boxing matches, “The Rich Eisen Talk Show,” and Roku Originals produced with sports leagues. “We continue to see audiences enjoy the familiar, lean-back experience FAST offers, especially with sports. Sports is one of our most popular channel genres on The Roku Channel, which makes us so excited to make it even easier for audiences to jump into Roku’s standout programming,” said Joe Franzetta, Roku Media Head of Sports.

NBC and Universal Television are developing “Keats” (w/t), a drama following a fourth-generation former police officer whose mother’s death has her reconsidering her decision to walk away from the force. The series comes from Bassett Vance Productions. Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance will executive produces alongside Lynnette Ramirez and writer Pilar Golden.

CBS’ Robert Kosta landed President Joe Biden’s first interview since he announced he will not seek reelection. The conversation, which was taped at the White House, will air on “CBS News Sunday Morning” on August 11 at 9a.

“OceanXplorers,” following OceanX’s state-of-the-art ocean exploration vessel, premieres Sunday, August 18 at 9p on National Geographic. The six-parter’s executive producer is James Cameron (“Titanic”).

ID’s “Born Evil: The Serial Killer and the Savior” premieres across three nights beginning Monday, September 2 at 9p. The docuseries, the first from executive producer Michael Bay (“Transformers”), offers a “chilling portrait” of Hadden Clark and his path of depravity.

Season two of “Tough Love: Atlanta” premieres Thursday, August 15 at 9p on Cleo TV with an extended one-hour episode.

Also coming back for a sophomore season is “Colin from Accounts,” with all eight episodes dropping Thursday, September 26 on Paramount+.

COMING UP

Lifetime has acquired the psychological thriller “Held Hostage in My House” (formerly known as “Blunt”), set to premiere Saturday, September 7 at 8p. The film tells the story of a single mother trapped at her vacation rental who must piece together clues to find out who was her assailant.

National Geographic Documentary Films’ “Fly,” centered on the world of BASE jumping, will have a run in IMAX theaters on September 2 and 3, before landing on Nat Geo on Tuesday, September 24.

Also getting a theatrical run is Paramount+ documentary “We Will Dance Again,” about the October 7 terror attack on the Nova Music Festival. The film will play in theaters Friday, August 29 and Sunday, September 1 before debuting on Paramount+ this fall.

Fuse Media announced its entry into film with the theatrical release of the ViX original documentary “Unfightable,” telling the story of Alana McLaughlin, a distinguished US Army Special Forces Sergeant and transgender athlete competing as a professional MMA fighter.

Fox News’ “Gutfeld!” will broadcast live at 11p in NYC during the Democratic National Convention from August 19-22. Gutfeld will be joined by a live studio audience following the network’s coverage of the DNC in Chicago.

Antenna TV has two marathons on deck: a “Facts of Life” back-to-school binge starting Sunday, August 11 at 7a, and a Labor Day “Barney Miller” run starting Monday, September 2 at 5.

CBS will host an immersive experience inspired by “Ghosts” timed around the comedy’s October 17 fourth season premiere. CBS and Just Fix It Productions’ Creep LA are creating an interactive 60-minute show, “Creep LA: Ghosts,” to be held on select dates in October.

Comedy special “Adam Sandler: Love You” premieres Tuesday, August 27 on Netflix. Sandler’s last Netflix comedy special, “Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh,” was released in 2018.

Previous “Big Brother” winners Jag Bains (season 25), Taylor Hale (season 23) and Cody Calafiore (season 22) analyze the wildest moments so far during season 26 on a special airing Tuesday, August 13 at 8p on CBS.

YouTube is testing a new ad format for live video it hopes will be less disruptive to viewers: picture-in-picture midroll ads that will run alongside a livestream. “Some viewers on select devices will begin to see the new ad format in the coming months, allowing creators to run ads without disrupting the live stream,” said YouTube’s “test features and experiments” blog.

DatafuelX announced that M3, its full-service platform for transacting against all currencies, has seen 118 ordered Data Driven Linear (DDL) campaigns representing $71.9 million in campaign spend supported since it launched in June 2022. Overall, datafuelX says 56% of its revenue growth in DDL campaigns came from new clients, with the remaining 44% coming from existing clients. “M3 was developed in direct response to the industry embracing a shift toward a multi-measurement marketing place and to enable utilization of alternative currencies by buyers and sellers,” said Spencer Lambert, VP, Product & Partnership Success. “Its growth underscores the expanding interest in and use of DDL by sellers to realize better yield from their inventory and by buyers to better optimize their audience targeting.”

STREAMING

Warner Bros. Discovery added 3.6 million streaming subscribers in the last quarter, to surpass 103 million. Total revenue in the direct to consumer division fell 6% year over year to $2.57 billion. Distribution revenue came in flat at $2.2 billion, while advertising revenue grew 98% to $240 million, content revenue fell 70% to $123 million and other revenue fell 67% to $3 million, according to the earnings report.

Hearst Media Production Group announced an expansion of its partnership with Samsung TV Plus, which currently distributes the HMPG FAST channels Xplore, Rovr Pets, and The Jack Hanna Channel. In addition, Samsung TV Plus will license more than 500 hours of HMPG original programming in the US including the weekly series “Lucky Dog,” “Matter of Fact with Soledad O’Brien,” “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Protecting the Wild,” “Harlem Globetrotters: Play It Forward,” and more.

Anime streaming service Crunchyroll has surpassed 15 million monthly subscribers. “Today marks an exciting milestone not only for Crunchyroll, but for the entire anime industry,” said Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll. “It is proof that the rich stories, characters and experiences that our partners create are resonating deeply with fans at record numbers all over the world.”

SPORTS UPDATE

Telemundo will air the third-place matches and finals of the Olympic soccer tournament this weekend, including the men’s France vs. Spain final on Friday at 12p, and the women’s Brazil v. USA final on Saturday at 11a.

Outdoor Sportsman Group reported that 81% of sessions on its digital platforms were classified as engaged sessions, lasting longer than 10 seconds or at least two pageviews or screen views per session.
